Join Steve Loftus, and Wings' Curator Chuck Stout on a journey into the history of the Boeing B-29 Doc Superfortress in it's design, development, and use at Historic Lowry Air Force Base. Heading to Wichita, Kansas, we meet the B-29 Doc crew, one of only two B-29s flying today. We'll peer into the early flight simulators used for B-29 training, and end with a once in a lifetime experience flying Doc from Wichita back to Exploration of Flight in Denver. This one's going to be cool!

Fifi was in town last week, got to see her and watch takeoff. When that thing flies over at 3000’ the sound is amazing, I can only imagine what dozens sounded like flying overhead.

Would love to see a bit of footage of the perspective is from the gunner’s station, the tail, and a little more sense of what it was like to serve on one of these. Cramped, I’m guessing!

I’ve visited the Enola Gay B-29 and she was the one who dropped the atomic bombs on Japan
Hopefully it can make it to Star Spangled air show at Tinker next year. Would love to take the children to see this. Also got the chance to meet Paul Tibbets.

My grandfather was a bombardier on a B29 during WW2 I have some awesome pictures he took. I would love to see this B29 someday

Such a beautiful plane. Must have been a great experience to actually fly one! Remember how they tried to recover the 'Kee Bird' on Greenland in 1995. Would've been the 3rd flying B-29 if one of the engines hadn't caught fire shortly before take-off. Wasn't a pretty picture.
Engines catching fire are very on-brand for the B-29. Glad they mentioned that in the video.
It wasn't one of the main engines, it was the APU in the rear of the aircraft.
Ive always liked the way yhe nose looks with its front gear down.
I got to tour Doc last year, what a great opportunity that was to see such an amazing aircraft.
On my list, have seen Fifi twice, Doc never seems to make it to Chicagoland.

Yes! The Wright R-3350-23 was used in commercial airline service with the Douglas DC-7 and Lockheed Super Constellation. It also powered the Consolidated B-32 and TB-32, the Boeing XC-97, C-97, and YC-97 and Lockheed C-121A and YC-121B
@@Wings_Museum Well thank you very much. So the engines for the B36 were not the same as for the B29?Were they turboprop?
@@sealove79able Correct the B-36 were powered in a unique configuration with six 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines
@@sealove79able The B-50, which was an evolution of the B-29, used the same engines as the B-36. From the B-50, came the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, then the 'Guppy' series of aircraft.

This is footage from Doc's visit in March. But they had a great turnout and will likely come back through.
I didn't know anything about the B-29, but it looks like it was an awesome plane.
it was a highly advanced plane for the time. Pressurized cabin, one man can operate 5 of the radar guns like a video game. General Electric Central Fire Control System radar guided guns made it lethal against enemy aircraft. Since it was computer controlled all 5 guns could shoot at the same target. It could fire at 50% longer range than guns aimed manually and twice the range of fighter guns. The B29 program cost more than the atomic bomb project. Insane for 1940s tech.
