I beg to differ, at least in the case of Levin. He write and plays bass lines and Chapman Stick progressions that are at least capable to of turning the likes of Les Claypool, Billy Sherwood, Geezer Butler, and other notable bassists green with envy.
It's a spontaneous jam. It's a different way of composing and shouldn't be judged against a piece that's been worked on for months or years. Plus, I'll admit that this is the weakest track on the album. I still really enjoy it though. If I ever saw live musicians jamming at this level it would blow my mind.

Damn that bass is funky! Tony Levin is not the flashiest bass player in history, but he's definitely one of the best.

They are musicians , not composers. Jimi Hendrix was not impressed with his own playing. He wanted to be able to write greate songs.
