  • Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is surrounded by pine forests and contains the largest travertine bridge in the world. The Bridge stands 183 feet high over a tunnel 440 feet long that measures 150 feet at its widest point.
You can view the bridge from two viewpoints at the level of the parking lot or you can walk across the wide bridge on a path and take the Gowan Trail down to Pine Creek and view the bridge from below on an observation deck. You can walk through the tunnel if you wish, though you have to climb over rocks to do it. Viewing the bridge only from above misses the grandeur of this remarkable natural feature.
The park also has other trails, very attractive in themselves. The Anna Mae Trail takes you down to Pine Creek on the other side of the Bridge. Then you can traverse the tunnel going in the opposite direction if you wish.
My favorite trail was the Waterfall Path. It drops down close to Pine Creek but has water cascading pleasantly off the cliff in several places in a damp, junglelike environment. The soothing splashing of the water on the trail is worth the trip down the trail all by itself. And while the Gowan Trail was quite crowded, there were only two other people on the Waterfall Path while I went down it. Caution: you will get wet!
I included the splashing water “music” on the Waterfall Path in my video.
