      I have the guts to try just not the funds to take it to the next step. But I’m slowly getting there and finding other ways to achieve the same goal with smaller less expensive tools. I’ve been wanting to get into forging because I have the wood working skills and some fabrication skills. Just wanting to step out of my comfort zone again. Lol. But I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and understanding some of the principles of what your doing. And my mind has been running wide open with ideas from your vids. Thank you for doing the videos.

    Great job Torbjörn! I finished my first real decorative piece last week. A metal woodrack for fire wood. more than 8 meters of round bar, 12 different pieces, 20 rivets. It is not at all perfect, it has a lot of small imperfections but I'm really proud of it. Most difficult build that I've ever done :D

    How would a handle have been attached to something like that back before modern welding? Would the entire tool, handle and all, just be forged as a whole?

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  7 років тому +2

      One could have forged the entire piece, no problem. BUT, this tool is meant to be used with a power hammer, so it's not a traditional tool in that way. A similar, "authentic" tool is made with a shank underneath to fit your anvil hardy hole.

    Hi,
    which type of steel did you use?
    I thought high carbon steel and welding dont work.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  8 років тому

      +Alexander Busch This one is a piece of custom "High strain steel" along the lines of A517(B)... Odd but I got some drops for free and it seems to work for a verity of tools. For this type of tool even mild steel would hold up pretty good I think, but medium carbon steel like 1045,4140 would be my standard steel pick.

    Torbjörn, hur är det att komma in i smedyrket nuförtiden som ungdom? är det ett vettigt yrke med okej inkomst eller är det bättre att ha det som hobby vid sidan av?

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  8 років тому

      +SwompyGaming Svårt att veta... Först o främst måste du vara beredd på att jobba rejält mycket och dessutom vara duktig på vad du gör. Det finns dock flertalet unga smeder i vårt land som lyckas bra, så omöjligt är det absolut inte. Jag själv gör ju bara detta på hobby-nivå än så länge...

    • @SwompyGaming

      Torbjörn Åhman är ju utbildad till snickare så ett hårt arbete är jag ju lite van med, föredrar att arbeta med händerna än att sitta inne vid en skärm.
      känns som hobby är lite mer den säkra vägen att gå, måste ju se till att få ihop till en gård så jag kan ha en smedja och verkstad först det lär ta ett årtionde eller två :)
