  • On 10 September I left Cowes, United Kingdom to sail across the Atlantic to the Caribbean in my Nicholson 35ft “Telemachus”.
    In this video I cross the Bay of Biscay and dodge shipping and weather before arriving in A Coruna in NW Spain.

    The one thing in heavy weather people need to watch out for when solo sailing . Is the rolling jib getting snagged in the pulpit when the wind unexpectedly picks up. The sail fills up and the boat comes under power, often causing the boat to broach. Having to go on deck and untangle the jib in high wind with the boat listing is no joke when your on your own. Very scary.

    Thanks Ed … nice little vid …. I’m watching from Sydney and at a number of points I thought I detected an Aussie twang or two but there’s a lot more Brit than Aussie in that accent. I was happily vindicated when the Aussie flag made a celebrity appearance at the end. Good luck and I shall follow you with interest. 👍

    The Nicholson 35 is a perfect cruiser for long ocean passages. I imagine thats exactly what it was build for. Shouldn't have any problems there.

    I would not call a 35' boat small by any means.

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing  8 місяців тому +1

      Certainly there’s the true adventures in the 20’ range, but Telemachus is always the smallest (and classiest) boat in any anchorage so far! Perhaps that says more about modern yachts’ LOA.

    Hi Ed. Could you tell me about the electronic chart shown on your laptop? What is it and how do you install it? Loving your videos.

    Your boat's not so small. 'Constant vigillance' just as well all times, lots of boats, yachts, fishing boats, dont have AIS. You only found that liferaft with keeping a good lookout. Have some good times in the Caribbean.

    Me and my wife went through the bay of biscay on a cruise liner and no word of a lie the water was so rough the ship took on a 60 degree list and cos we now have a yacht of our own and because weve experienced the bay of biscay our selves we wont be sailing through these waters.

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing  7 місяців тому +1

      That makes sense! It’s all each person’s risk tolerance and management, particularly when they have responsibility for their crew. Having said that, weather forecasting is getting much better - where a cruise ship must brave rough weather to keep a schedule, it’s always ok to wait for better weather on a private yacht. I know friends who had to motor the entire Biscay is flat calm seas!

    Great job! what did you do about sleep shifts? I'm heading the same way solo this year and interested in other folks experiences. Thanks,

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing  7 місяців тому

      It’s a great question and inevitably a controversial one! I approach sleep based on where I am - short 20 min naps inshore or near the coast / shipping lanes. Longer rests offshore. In all cases the AIS alarm is set loudly and I have multiple phones/alarms in case I miss one!

  • @stanleybest8833
    @stanleybest8833 7 місяців тому

    There's lots of UA-cam sailors but big questions unanswered. How do you dodge all those island fees and ripoffs? Do you steam on a course when you're asleep? Do commercial ships routinely pass you good travel notices? Does dry salt turn into a nightmare? Are marinas sometimes affordable? Do countries demand stupid things like passports? Do you run into harassment when you fetch water and food ashore?
