    Cool passage Ed. Hope you did not suffer to much with the north wind front. If I may can I ask you about your double Ais system? How do you have Ais signal on your computer? How do you have it on your navionics tablet? Two antennas, two vhf systems? I have a complete Raymarine system but I only can catch ais on my chart plotter. I would love to have redundancies. Thank you. Duarte Champalimaud from Portugal.

      Hi Duarte, I use a Digital Yacht iAISTX transponder. It includes a WiFi network that my laptop and navionics can connect to. The iAISTX and VHF both connect to an aerial splitter (sharing the same AIS antenna), but there is a redundant disconnected AIS mushroom on the pushpit for backup. Hope this helps!

    Watching so many sailing videos, and sailing for 40yrs myself, it's refreshing to see someone who actually knows what they're doing, seamanship, points of sail, sail trim, etc.... Great job! The one thing I see people almost never do or talk about is, practice man overboard recovery. Especially in sea conditions where it's most likely to happen.

    Great video and great to see the adventure on a Nic 35. I just bought hull number 165, Amaryllis. Very excited for the summer and the adventures that lie ahead. I would love to do an ocean crossing with her. Any advice on things that you can’t live without or would have set up differently? I have a small refit going on in the spring (diesel heater & black water tank install) and then next winter will look into solar. Interesting to see your wings i/o an arch for cost savings… Not sure where I’ll land on that! An arch maybe nice to organise the growing number of antennas on her stern!

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing 6 місяців тому

      Hey! I reckon the indispensables are quite dependent on your plans, budget and crew. (I need the Hydrovane for example, but may not be needed inshore or with more crew.) In hindsight a solar arch would be good for the sunshade here in the Caribbean. I have swapped all lights to LED (even nav and masthead) which cuts lighting draw by 90%. There’s a thousand other quality of life upgrades, for example diverting an unused through-hull to provide seawater into the galley sink. Wi-Fi AIS is great, can use Navionics on phone / tablet and avoid old expensive chartplotters. IridiumGo is useful for weather and emails offshore, but is quickly being overtaken by Starlink (if you can find space for more batteries or lithium on the Nic)

    Dominica is amazing. Looks like Argenaut was beached in Portsmouth near the street market and hadn't even cleared in yet. Curious where she will be towed (Antigua or Matinque) for repairs as Dominca has not the facilities that I am aware of.

    Great videos. I have a 1976 Dufour 35 in Guatemala. Question for you, I’m thinking about lowering my solar panels from overhead to the rails like yours. What size panels are you using, do they ever get in the way, and are you pleased with the output at that level? Thank you 🙏

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing 6 місяців тому

      Hi! I went for the “butterfly wings” simply because budget and time didn’t permit a stainless arch. The panels are Renogy 100W each on a stainless rod, the output is great and routinely hits 80-100W in peak sun (Victron MPPT). But tbh if you have an arch I would keep it, simply for the options of sunshade in the Caribbean, hanging fruit nets/fishing rods etc and keeping the side decks clear. Hope this helps!

    Me and my wife went through the bay of biscay on a cruise liner and no word of a lie the water was so rough the ship took on a 60 degree list and cos we now have a yacht of our own and because weve experienced the bay of biscay our selves we wont be sailing through these waters.

    • @edbeardsailing
      @edbeardsailing 6 місяців тому

      That makes sense! It’s all each person’s risk tolerance and management, particularly when they have responsibility for their crew. Having said that, weather forecasting is getting much better - where a cruise ship must brave rough weather to keep a schedule, it’s always ok to wait for better weather on a private yacht. I know friends who had to motor the entire Biscay is flat calm seas!

    The one thing in heavy weather people need to watch out for when solo sailing . Is the rolling jib getting snagged in the pulpit when the wind unexpectedly picks up. The sail fills up and the boat comes under power, often causing the boat to broach. Having to go on deck and untangle the jib in high wind with the boat listing is no joke when your on your own. Very scary.
