Improvisation from Mooreiche, tune by Matthias Loibner recorded live at Zona da Zanfona Festival, Rianxo, Galiza, Spain. 19th April 2013. Filmed by Sabela Vázquez
Awesome ! I love the way Matthias uses every sound possible on the Gurdie to make a song brilliantly alive from scrachie to pluck to singing like an opera singer , Excelent
He just plays a German/Austrian "DREHLEIER" but this BEAUTIFUL MEDIEVAL Instrument was AND IS USED all over EUROPE and some people in EUROPE call ih " Hurdy Gurdy".......

Electronic amplification greatly changes the tonal quality of the Vielle a Roue. It's only vaguely reminiscent of a medieval instrument, which is OK, but I think the most impressive way to hear the Hurdy Gurdy is in a hall or or old church without electronic amplification. Hearing it performed on a street with a competent singer is completely different, but gives you a more earthy perception of the drones vs. the melody strings. Played by a quietly crackling campfire, it is even more haunting and completely mesmerizing. I simply adore this instrument.
I saw him about 15 years ago at a loop festival. He did similar stuff like this, but used a loop machine to bring more layers to his music. I remember I was just standing there hardly being able to grasp what was happening in front of me. This guy is from another planet...
Sorry to bother you after all this time, but do you have a link to a video of that event? Or even the audio of it in itself? It would be very interesting to hear.
Dear loibner you are a real master and somehow your music and instrument connects screw all the ugly comments Sennen Antonio Dourado Milwaukee Wisconsin India Mumbai
Funny you should mention that, because Arin and Dan were talking about it today which inspired me to look it up, leading me to this video and your comment!
So today I was looking at The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades (don't ask) and there was an etching from around 1200 of a guy on a hurdy gurdy playing with a bagpipe and horn player. I realized I had no idea what a hurdy gurdy was! Glad you posted this. It's a very cool looking ax actually! Seems like it could become indispensable to movie soundtrack composers.
listened to this guy in another song that I disliked. Glad I decided to give him another chance this Dude truly is a master. I didnt care for the first song I heard him play but this is much more pleasing to my ears and dang can he play this thing to its full potential. Need to hear more from him!
Can someone tell me how this hurdy gurdy sounds so deeper on this video than it does on the other video of him? Can you mute certain string or add lower strings?
Hi Mat, it's not only the strings he uses (tonality) for the drones and melody but also the type sound recording when we filmed. On this video the sound source was taken directly from the mixing desk; the other video was recorded from the camera's inbuilt microphone, so the sound is weaker.
@Tucker Latham the game uses HG music as most of it. its a totally fair thing to say. get off your high horse, its not about how they discover something. its that they bothered to.
It sounds like Satan standing in line at the DMV to get his tabs renewed after just downing a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew and six chili cheese burritos from Taco Bell
This instrument is verrry old, when it first arrived in 900, everybody was very pleased with it. But after a while, like the sound of bagpipes: you 'know' the sound. Violins have the same: if you have heard a few hours of violin, you go: 'ok, enough with the violins already'. The sound is always 'the same' thing: drones, violin sound on top, and thats it. Because it was a one-man instrument, mostly played in inns and such, and because the rich bastards have moved on to more 'exciting' instruments like the pipe-organs in churches to name one, it slowly became 'the poor mans instrument'. Not that a poor man owned such an expensive instrument: but only poor people would listen to it, in the pubs. that was back around 1500 if I am not mistaken. Later there was a bit of a revival, and now the instrument is appreciated a fair bit again in many countries.

He is able to convey a great deal in his music, and it is a unique honor to be able to heat it.
it is indeed hot

Medieval instruments are the coolest.
This Hurdy isnt medieval. Medieval Hurdy gurdys are Organistrum, Chiffonia and some types of rebec-vielle.
Sublime! I could listen to this over and over!
Wooooow! It was a really nice trip, thanks!

They call this a "folk instrument?". What folk could afford it nor have time to learn to play it? They must have been a lot simpler in medieval times.

please, set free that bee inside.
not sure what makes him a master, this seems pretty average.
The poor instrument ! 👎👎👎
