You're delusional if you think that was positive, the man's the PM he's supposed to be uniting the country. Only 20% of Britain voted for him, he's ignoring 80% plus all the pensioners that regret voting for him now he's cut their fuel allowance. He's a hated man and rightly so.
So would that be worth doing? The council just answered an FOI request about its Abbey Road scheme: Cost per house? “We do not have an accurate cost per property to provide this information” What sort of solar panels? “Four properties had photovoltaics fitted and four properties had solar thermal fitted.” So, four sets of panels to generate electricity and four to heat water (though not the house whose roof they’re on) - if the sun’s shining. And Kirklees can’t compare one type with the other because: Fuel savings per house (i.e., comparison of current bills with previous ones)? “We do not have information to make a reliable comparison and this is our residents [sic] sensitive information.” The “monitoring” hasn’t happened. Any help from central Government? “No this work was not grant funded by central Government.”
Keir Starmer has blamed his son’s GCSEs for taking £20,000 in donations for accommodation. The PM insisted his teenager needed somewhere to study in peace while the family were under close scrutiny during the run-up to the election. Sir Keir also left the door open to accepting more hospitality from donors in future, saying it was a matter of ‘judgement’ for MPs. The premier has been accused of hypocrisy over gifts after Labour was highly critical of Boris Johnson and other Tories when they were in power. But in a round of interviews after his speech to party conference last night, Sir Keir said he was ‘not going to apologise for not doing anything wrong’ and the freebies did not ‘cost the taxpayer a penny’. He insisted the transition to Downing Street had been ‘really difficult’ for his two children, who were previously raised in North London. Asked about the donations, Sir Keir said that around £20,000 he had declared from Lord Alli for unspecified accommodation was for his teenager to study for exams in a ‘peaceful’ atmosphere while there was intense media attention in the run-up to the election. ‘My boy, 16, was in the middle of his GCSEs. I made him a promise, a promise that he would be able to get to his school, do his exams, without being disturbed,’ he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Readers may remember Ben Pile’s article last month which mentioned Sir Keir Starmer’s 2022 visit to eco-upgraded houses owned by Kirklees Council. Eight houses in Abbey Road, Fartown, Huddersfield were given heat pumps instead of gas boilers, plus insulation, triple-glazed windows and solar panels. The Daily Mail reported the then-Opposition leader’s 2022 Conference speech praising the scheme, which Kirklees Council originally estimated would cost about £60,000 per house and save up to £350 on annual energy bills (so take at least 172 years to pay for itself). Kirklees said it “would be monitoring the performance of the properties to inform future schemes we carry out”. As the Mail reported, retrofitting the nation’s 1.6 million council-owned homes in this way would cost £96 billion (tens of billions here, tens of billions there, soon you’re talking serious money…). So would that be worth doing? The council just answered an FOI request about its Abbey Road scheme:
The mortgage on Sir Keir Starmer’s £2 million townhouse has been paid off, official documents show. Sir Keir and Lady Starmer have achieved what many homeowners can only dream of - putting them in the top one-third of English homeowners in not having to make mortgage or rent payments. The four-bedroom property, in north London’s trendy Kentish Town, officially became mortgage-free on Monday last week. There was previously a loan from Barclays Bank noted on the Land Registry title deed, a public document. But on September 16, it was updated to show the loan has been ‘discharged’, meaning the high-street bank no longer retains any rights over the four-storey terraced house.
