Yes Sir, that smile is priceless! You boys did a great job of honoring your Dad, that tells us your Dad raised you with love and respect..... I wish my ol-man was here to go to the shop with. I wonder if there’ll be Lathes and welders in Heaven or a 2 stick Kenworth

    Enjoyed this.
Interesting my father is at Dr as I watched this. He is 87 & has lung cancer. He also was a Operator for the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean War. They ran D-7 Cat Dozier's & Pans & Graders that had the same Pony start. They built runways in England. He ran the first D-8 that was sent them in England during this time.

I don’t know how old this is but good for him on being cancer free. That, I know from experience is a incredible feeling. I hope he stays that way.👍

So glad to hear your dad is cancer free. Enjoy every minute of every day he has as there are no guarantees. I lost my dad back in 1979 on his 70th birthday. I think of him every day.
Tell your dad you love him every chance you get.
    Cheers!

My hometown in South Georgia had one of these graders but without the cab. There were still a lot of dirt roads in town when I was little in the 60's and they were still using it for ditch maintenance when I left after high school.Great piece of machinery. They had it parked at my elementary school one cold winter morning and at recess they were trying to start it and it took about as long as you guys and they had used it the day before.LOL!

I own one of these, but the starter motor and its controls are on the side where you have the camera. It looks to me like you started out with the injector rack engaged (fuel going to diesel) and the decompression lever engaged. On mine, a six cylinder model, you pull up a detent button on the throttle and pull the throttle back to disengage the injectors. Then you pull the decompression lever back under the hood near the pony motor so the diesel is cranking with no compression. This takes the load off the pony motor by turning the diesel with no compression. After you get it spinning good, you put the compression back into the diesel so that compressing air in the cylinders with no fuel starts warming up the cylinder. The pony motor also circulates coolant through the diesel water jackets so running the pony motor heats up the heads. Depending on the ambient outside temperature, let it crank under compression with no fuel until it has a chance to warm up enough to compress diesel to the heat of combustion. If you pull the throttle on and get white smoke without the diesel starting, disengage the injectors and keep cranking with the pony motor to warm things up some more. Eventually, you will get the diesel warm enough that it starts when you engage the injectors. In the summer, this might only take a minute or two, but in the winter, it can take a bit of time. Glad to hear your dad was doing better. This is an old posting, but thought you might still look at the comments once in awhile.

Yaa Mike, I spent 3 years running one like that one in the summertime, when we built the Hwy 41-Prospect
avenue Interchange, the Hwy 41-441 interchange or Polish Connection, and the Hwy 41-Breezewood
Interchange. Them old graders are dependable, never had a breakdown, as long as you had gas in the gas tank for the pony engine. Once I had to rope start the pony engine, that was a job, but got'ter going. Good old
    machines.

Just lost my Dad at 99 in January. When I was a kid back in the 70s we had to start a shovel dozer that had a crank start pony. Crank ha been lost, gas tank and line was rotted. We made up a crank and a pop bottle and hose for gas and after much swearing it started and the dozer started right up. Good thing too cause I don't think that pony was ever gonna run again

He also had a 1967 D7 that he took the pony motor out and replaced it with a starter.... Just a starter, no wires, No battery, nothing. We would have to bring a 24 volt battery and then jump it with 2 pick up trucks. We still have it. No ones started it in 5 or 6 years

Just let the pony run n haet things even if the main is on freewheel . relived compression itll serculate things. Nice vid though. Would have likeed a closer view.

I think I was more excited than you to see it going. After what he went through so far this is good. very good. And you say, "what you going to do"? well after he is gone you can go out and start it every six months. that is a wonderful machine. really otherwise the fuel in the pony motor will ruin the carb or become stale, in fact when you park it the gas should be drained out even if you can shut it off to the pony motor.

As much trouble as that pony motor was having spinning that engine over, I was wondering if they had the compression release open. Should be able to start the pony, open the compression release, engage the drive pinion to turn over the diesel, then after several minutes turn on the fuel and close the compression release and she should start fairly easily. No ether required ( or recommended).

    • @dakotak8437
      @dakotak8437 4 роки тому

@@notajp you wanna close the compression first for a few minutes to warm up then open fuel bc it can kick up and pop put the pony clutch then gatta start over just let it warm with compression
