- Elephant's foot tree, Ponytail palm tree (Beaucarnea Recurvata)
I have had this ponytail palm for over 10 years. It's time to prune this guy back to a more manageable size and get him looking like a Bonsai tree.

The fingers freaked me out for a sec. Beautiful tree.
Ha! Me too when I first saw them. They have stayed with the plant since then! Good eye!
This was the first video I found on your channel. I'm actually repotting a ponytail into a bonsai so this was extremely helpful Great content man.
Glad it was helpful! I am debating whether to repot the Ponytail palm this year or wait one more. It is doing well.
That's a nice ponytail palm, they really make neat looking bonsai. I also miss our long evening daylight !
Thanks! As much as I love Fall, the Summer goes by way too fast!
Fun fact: Elephants walk on the soles of their feet and have toenails rather than hooves. That is why they are considered to have "feet". The sole of the foot is covered in a thick epidermal layer tissue that acts like shock absorbers. This allows the elephant to move surprisingly silently... so watch your back.
Hello! Love your channel, I m in nyc area, been looking for branched ponytail palm, ideally 3 branches with different heights, know anyone or good nursery selling them? From 4 to 9 feet would be ideal, if the composition I like I don’t mind to get few smaller ones. I have some reference pix. Hope I can find a nice ponytail I love and can keep for a long time! Thank you
sorry to be offtopic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb lost the password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Jaxxon Johnathan Instablaster ;)
What a gnarly tree. It looks almost prehistoric with that rugged bark. Great video!
Thanks! I can totally see a dinosaur crawling around underneath!
There aren't enough bonsai decorated with dinosaurs.
@@HerbandRoots why is there a human hand in the pot?
@@morgancalvi6675 Good eye! That is a piece of an old prosthetic that was put in the pot years ago by my wife. I got a pretty good scare out of it when I first noticed it. It has just stayed with this plant ever since.
@@HerbandRoots 😂
I just purchased a pony tail palm from the lows, I got it on clearance. After I got home I noticed something has chewed up most of the roots.. so.. im trying I guess haha still it is a lovely plant
Nice balcony view!
It really is! We call it the tree house!
Awesome video and super jealous of your ponytail palm! They are my obsession right now! Any plans for an update on the tree?
I love these guys! I will add an update in my next video. It is doing well. The leaves are almost down to the rim of the pot now!
I noticed that your ponytail has shorter and more wider leaves in comparison with other specimens that have long narrow leaves. Any idea on the names of the different varieties? Looking forward to an update on this guy!
I don't have an ID for it. I picked it up at an IKEA years ago. It might be because the leaves are still growing back from the trunk chop. They are quite a bit longer now.
@@HerbandRoots I've seen specimens of the 2 distinct varieties and have been trying find out if they have different names...but no luck yet.:) Thanks for the answer!
Looking forward to an update video in a few months :)
I will do that. I have some ideas of things I would do differently etc. Thanks for watching.
@@HerbandRoots is there an update? Why did you decide to put it in shallow pot? I know you wanted to make it bonsai but still what’s the difference between bonsai growing in regular or shallow pot?
I live the fingers in it also 😂
Looks beautiful.Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!✌
Gnarly bark bro!!! I killed my nursery rescue with I am assuming was over watering based on your success with light watering. Lol. Thanks for another great video.
Prior to the trunk chop, the trunk was not as visible. I am loving the new look. We will see how this goes. It was in the old pot for 7 or 8 years before this. Hopefully this was not too much of a shock for him!
@@HerbandRoots i dig it. Good luck!!!
Could you have planted the stubs you chopped off? Beautiful 😍plant.
I thinned out a couple of the new shoots and tried to root them in water. They stayed alive in the water for nearly a year but never rooted. I did not have any luck. It might be the case that it roots more easily from older wood like Bougainvillea though. Thank you!
very nice project.
Thank you! Cheers!
Very interesting 👍😊
BTW you can also re-pot & grow the part of stem you cut off also
I did thin out a couple of the new shoots and tried to grow that as a cutting in water. It stayed alive for over a year in the water but never rooted. I finally gave up on it. I bet woody cuttings from this species would root more easily.
How????? Looking to chop my tree….. I need help! Thank you!
Can also check out Bonsai Hunter here on you tube, shows detailed where to cut even lower than you did, & just how long before new growth comes up, how to pot & all. Blessed Be
Thanks for the info! I will check out Bonsai Hunter!
Will the pruned leaves continue to grow, or will they die off and new leaves take their place?
How is this tree doing now in the new pot?
Doing great! I expected it to take the repotting a little tough since it was in the last pot for so long but it didn't really miss a beat. I plan to do an update at some point this Summer. I just now posted an update pic on my Instagram of this tree -> @solsticenursery
Are you a magician?
👍❤️
How did the trunk divide into four parts
That is from a trunk chop probably around 12 years ago. Four growing tips sprouted up from the cut point of the trunk chop.
👏👏👏👏👏😍
Can we get an update on this 🪴? Is it 👌?
It is looking good. I did a quick update at the beginning of a recent video here: ua-cam.com/video/Qk57IvWupbE/v-deo.html I pinned a comment with the time stamp for the update on that video. I will do a more in depth update soon!
Do you have a Facebook or email? I have so many questions lol. Awesome plants!!
I subscribed
Thanks! More to come!
👍👍👍 😎
🌳👍
It's not a palm despite it's name. It's actually a succulent.
Its 2023 actually
Actually, this was filmed 3 yrs ago.
