Maria Ewing is the best Cherubino I have ever heard. She has a beatiful voice and perfect acting. I can belive that a teenage boy is on the scene, honest and natural with full of love. "He" is so cute.
I love the way she looks like Mozart himself. Since the role of Cherubino came from Mozart's own soul (clearly the little dude was a heavenly "cherub" himself, incarnated in human form; how else could he possibly have written all that miraculous music?) I like to think that this is as close as we'll ever get to seeing and hearing the composer sing one of his own arias!😇
FYI: This performance is from the filmed version of the complete opera, starring Hermann Prey as Figaro, Mirella Freni as Susanna, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as The Count Almaviva, Kiri Te Kanawa as The Countess Almaviva, Maria Ewing as Cherubino, Paolo Montarsolo as Bartolo, Heather Begg as Marcellina, John van Kesteren as Basilio, Janet Perry as Barbarina, et al. Directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, with The Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Karl Böhm.
It’s a wonderful recording - the simplicity of the sets, & the costumes, everything in perfect harmony... The duet ‘Su l’aria’ is so perfect, it makes me smile & cry at the same time! Jean-Pierre Ponelle - the director - was a leading light of the ‘early music’ movement; they paid great attention to authenticity; the photography & designs here are sumptuous & soft, & very seductive... I was so glad to find a DVD - before that, I cried at the end; I cried BECAUSE it was the end! 🙏🏽🌹🙏🏻
@@Cristobels-Green-Boots I think this is one of the best performances of Figaro you'll ever find, anywhere; Ewing gives me goosebumps here, and of course, being able to see Dame Kiri sing "Dove sono…" when she was in her prime was almost like being at Glyndebourne in 1972 when the world discovered her
@@PaulZink - thank you Paul! I wonder how many people are familiar with this wonderful recording, with everyone involved having the time of their lives - great comedic acting, & the singing just superb... The DVD makes a great memento, as many of the cast are no longer with us - I never get tired of it, & there’s so much beauty in it: Thank you for your kind attention, take care & be well! 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏻
THIS, this scene, this performance, with the flawless Maria Ewing, was the first opera I had ever heard. I wept for it's beauty, and my mother and just looked at each other. She was as moved as I by the emotion,
What I was TRYING to say was, my mother and I looked at each other, & we were both much moved by the emotion, only Maria Ewing, has been able to convey, in such a manner. A young boy's tender first love and budding passion, is so eloquently portrayed by Maria, that every other performance I have seen, doesn't come close.
It is not very offend I cry with joy but this did it for me what a voice she has and even now she still lovely, what a pity that people like me (working class) can not afford to go and see these great works and yet they were written for all to hear not just the rich.
@Belle Mystique I grew up going to operas, concerts and everything with high quality professionals: Russians, Italians, Eslovenians, Polish, Americans, English... musicians from all parts of the world. And the voices! Divine voices! In Brazil, in my hometown, Belém, I could go to all concerts for frre. Yes, FOR FREE. I never paid a cent! The government invested a lot in the music conservatory and brought to my city the best that money could afford from all Europe and then our first Symphonic Orchestra was born. 💖 It was wonderful! Everyday I would go to the conservatory Carlos Gomes or to the theater and see rehearsals and performances... and every semester there is one international festival happening. Musicians from everywhere come for the concerts. All for Free! Now I live in Germany. And well, here in my village we don't have much concerts like in my hometown. Germany is becoming day by day decadent thank to these stupid liberals we have here, like a pest! When you go to big cities like Dresden, Hamburg or Berlin, yes. It's everywhere but always costs a lot of €€€. 😢😭 So, I stay home. I listen in UA-cam and I play my cello. No place is perfect. 💔
Most opera houses are keen to encourage diversity in their audiences - and so they sometimes provide standing room only spots to see the opera at a low price. Most now stream their performances so you can watch them at home for a very modest price. These are usually advertised on the opera websites. Cheaper than going to a football match. I'm retired so I don't have lots of money. I have bought some opera DVDs, and others I view for free on youtube.
Maria Ewing’s rendition of this, my favourite operative musical piece of all time is by far the best I’ve ever heard. Listening to this and watching her perform with such understanding of the character and music is the most moving experience I’ve had in years. I’m going to have it written into my Last Will and Testament that I want it played at my funeral service. I was searching for an orchestral version but that’s all changed since I’ve had the sheer joy of Maria Ewing’s superb performance. Brava, Maria.
For your funeral service you'd better ask for prayers for the salvation of your soul and the forgiveness of your sins instead of choosing your playlist.
Now now.......let's not get carried away here, there have been some fine Cherubino's over the years. In fact that is a role where it is impossible to sing badly.
I too find the praise here a little effusive--to say the least. Think the dramatic & musical concept wrong on some levels. The page is singing an already written song using the sheet music in a performance setting--perhaps he was sight reading the score. Pages were often instructed in music by their employers--in a sense this could be a "test"...not the place for Cherubino to vent emotions and "spill his soul". (He's already done that in his Act I aria.) The longing gazes at the Countess are overdone. For my money Cherubino should look about 16 not 12 as here. He has to be old enough to serve credibly as a soldier in Count Almviva's regiment.
@@abelb8455 Upps, you are right, sorry. Correction: the best Cherubino I have ever heard and seen. It is the unbelievable combination of her beautiful voice and the intense, sensual way of playing that enchanted and captivated me completely.
I used to rank Cecilia Bartoli's performance of this moving aria as the best ever, but Bartoli never brought tears to my eyes as does the sheer beauty of Maria Ewing's heartfelt and astonishing performance.
Bartoli’s voice is more closed, feathery and darker, smaller than Ewing’s. Which by comparison is freer and more evenly resonant with fruitier brighter core tones and a more open vibrato.
Là aussi c'est assez impressionnant, bravo. Je plein la personne qui n'est pas touchée par autant de grâce. Voix puissante, de l'émotion et peu de vibrato. Que du bonheur. Merci Maria.
