Better title: FromSoft's FIRST attempt at horror. The Echo Nights series is their oldest attempt at horror games, but its not their ONLY ONE. There is still Kuon, which is extremely hard to get your hands on and it's freaking obscure. On the topic of Echo Nights, I should mention that in future games they keep reusing several elements even when it makes no sense: - Haunted Location full of ghosts you have to help - Downfall is tied to that Dagger with the stone attached - Dagger = Cursed Philosopher's stone (some sort of wish granting bulls). - Protagonist of first game is same for all games - Female Lead will be the same in future games but relationship status will change.
Yeah, motifs and archetypes. Its right to treat each game as its own story with similar elements, not direct connects. but as much as he hates this story, he'll use it as another point for "overdone, trite fantasy tropes"
@@Tman2bard I think this game series suffers in the future cus they keep reusing the SAME protagonist and female lead even when history wise, they shouldn't be alive. They just happened to exist at the same time and the dagger is involved
Wait, hang on, I think this is a game I've been trying to track down for years now! I remember that there was a video game magazine I had that had an article on this game, and I have been trying on and off to figure out what the hell game it was for ages because I haven't been able to remember/track down what magazine it was actually featured in. This literally has all the things I remember in it, collecting the astral pieces, a boat as the primary setting, a mention that there were a limited number of curing potions, and a mention of three possible endings where you got the best ending by collecting all the astral pieces and not taking the knife... When I clicked on this video I was not expecting to answer a lingering question like this. I guess I too will be able to pass on and hand off an astral piece to you for this video.
Man you’re lucky to get an answer in a form of a video essay I remember searching of an old game myself from memories but the only thing I remember is that the game have an elf woman that eat a lot.
Personally- I don't see much of an issue with the Bad thing, Good thing plot element. Sometimes you just need a good pair of MacGuffins to write a tragedy for every victim involved in the chase for them- whether directly or just caught in the wake. BUT GOD FUCK THE CASINO FUCK IT TO HELL
If you're looking to lay the dead to rest with a stronger story, the Blackwell series is pretty great. They're basically mysteries where you need to discover the ghost's name and the circumstances behind their death to help them move on.
I was just trying to remember the name of these games, I had just a years old vague visual in my mind!! Thank you, stranger with great taste in games 🙏
i decided as soon as i saw your first video that any ben again upload would be an instant 'put everything down and watch' and i'm glad i did! i had a super long day today and this video came out at exactly the right time. it, like usual, was super entertaining and fun to watch - well done!
I had no idea FromSoft made a horror game. Kinda like you mentioned the concept is really interesting! I'm embarrassed honestly, I've had been working on a game myself and my concepts for gameplay are fairly similar. Still a pretty neat game though, story was weird, every time you said Henry and William I kept thinking of Fnaf. Anyways, great video, I really like the vibe of this one. It was super chill and just really nice to watch.
Feels very weird to harp on "overused" fantasy tropes in a game that came out in 1998. Especially while acknowledging the era when it comes to the control scheme. Going from your other videos to this, it felt very jarring how vehemently upset you were about fantasy tropes being overused in a game from 1998. Good video otherwise, though
Oh, now i know why this game sounded so familiar. It's because way back when the SBFP played the sequel Echo Night: Beyond for the the Halloween series they used to do. Seemed like an interesting game; Your heartbeat being a healthbar of sorts, it taking place on the moon, etc.
Words cannot express my shock hearing the words "collab with blue archive" after "world of warships" Anyway, great video! From's older library is always fun to explore
When you said that Echo Night is a horror mystery game and described the game play, it reminded me of the Spirit Hunter series (Death Mark, Spirit Hunter:NG, Shibito Magire/Death Mark 2)
Ben... based on what you said about Echo Night... you NEED to play Farewell Planet. It's a beautiful game where you go & fulfill the final wishes of all the robots (people? its never really made clear) in a village before taking them to pass on. It's a very short game (~4 hours I think), but its absolutely amazing. It has an incredible art style... It's just a really awesome game that is not talked about nearly enough!! (It's by the creator of BOKURA, by the way! That's how I found it :-])
Echo Nights is by far one of my favorite horror games. It has been in my mind since I was a child and I still love the concept of it. Thank you for your review. The King Section still is a personal enjoyment from me cause I quote Gwen Stefani 'I was talking Sh*T and I didn't think that he would hear me' *Breaks lights* 'Fair enough. I am no longer safe.'
Ben, when playing old games that were made literally before the 2000s don't expect an original plot XD literally most games, even back then, followed popular trends to get players to engage this is literally like the 2nd or 3rd time you get annoyed at an "unoriginal" plot when the game is so old
I honestly named every ghost i encountered after freeing them, and since there’s 26 of em, Yeah I used the alphabet. I’ll come back if I can find my old list
i can assure you the casino is far less difficult on actual hardware. you can literally just pause and unpause the game to stop the roulet wheel when you want
5:05 So it's the tired cliche of evil spirits being scared of the light. Although I guess it makes sense. If people are instinctually scared of the dark I suppose it's only fitting that the things that scare us would be afraid of the light.
LET'S GOOOOOOO us Echo Night fans eating with this! Echo Night is one of my favourite games of all time. I absolutely adore its sad and melancholic atmosphere.
Not sure if you’ve played any of the Clocktower games, but the third one is very similar. It has a lot of similar gameplay elements like lavender water as health and finding items to help ghosts move on.
i remember watching a playthrough of this game years ago, good game, about as scary as could be expected of a PS1 game (ambiguous origami foes), jfc tank controls (curse of the console, nothing to be done) narrative is a bit confusing at times but i still enjoyed it
I know how fromsoftware fans tend to over-speculate how every game they made was used to make the following ones but like to think that the dungeons in elden ring where you have to lure invincible shadow versions of basic enemies into a light in order to fight them was inspired by this game
Most games are very much learning lessons and adapting what you learned to your next game in production. Studios have obvious throughlines and quirks with their works. Fromsoft has had a Patches style character since Shadow Tower Abyss and it's been one of the funniest things to see people notice. Once you notice that, you start to notice a lot of the smaller things.
I’d love to see fromsoft take the engines they used for the dark souls games, bloodborne, Elden ring, and sekiro to make horror games i promise they’d either make bangers or a….admirable attempt
Great video as always! You should totally check out Dementium: the ward if you haven't! Short little survival horror on the DS thats far from perfect but surprisingly effective. It has a sequel too that I haven't played yet!
oh this is a game that just begs for a remake.... really sad it's near impossible for it to get one 😭. Will we be seeing vids ab the other games? tbh i'm curious if the story got better or not
Funnily Enough, Every other PS1 Fromsoft game shares these controls. Both Armored Core and Kings Field would keep them into the PS2 as well, with Armored Core 3 being the first to let you even use the left analog stick for movement, and later still till Armored Core Nexus to even give you proper dual analog control. Fromsoft did not want these games easy, even back then XD
This weirdly reminded me of at dead of night. Even though you don't exactly help the ghost, but more so they help you. Not sure if you've played it but that's a light suggestion for you if you're looking for something to make a video on. because even if we mention the other Echo nights, and even Kuon, we KNOW these games will be hard to come by, being that they are extremely rare games.
Hey hen I'm a huge fan, and I wonder if you could check out the forbidden siren duology for the ps2, its a great horror game and I consider it to be one of the best horror games

"Really overdone plot set up" Yeah, it was made in 1998. Its a trope that's been around.
