I went to Willingen with my school today and we went hiking. When we rreached a forest,I thought that it would be awesome to see a trail. And then, I saw some jumps and knew I've stumbled across a trail. When we reached the top, I saw that the trail was the World Cup DH trail and it is crazy that riders like Greg Minaar have ridden on the very ground I walked on.
Attempted a black diamond hip yesterday three times. First two times it felt like i bottomed out due to awkward landing. Third time, wicked OTB, ended up with the bike on my back and dragged my face in the dirt several feet. Fullfaces rock!
I was lucky, I learned riding hips when I first started riding dirt jump before moving to downhill. Great tips tho! Looking where you want to go made it for me!
I'm really old but still am keen to improve my all round bike skills cause you never know when your riding an unknown trail first time and need these skill set ,it can save your life !!!
Great video, really helpful. There is a 90 degree left handed hip at one of my local jump spots and I've been attempting it by carving the lip. Back to square one again for me to try dropping the shoulder.
Neat tips, but for an old dog like me it is hard to learn new tricks. (I'm 55) .. One day maybe.. Thanks Blake, I enjoyed a lot, including South Africa's landscapes :)
I'd like to see some tips on vert/lipped bmx style jumps (or in the skatepark) on the dirt jumper...show how to air out and what not. Everything is BMX influenced around where I live and those 26 inch wheels are a little awkward in the park
Like your tutorial details.Endo turns or pivots..Body movemebts weight placement..How much body weight on arms when endoing ..When pivoting how high back wheel needs to be off the ground to extend pivot..Thx
what about the feet? If I were to hip right would i need to switch which foot is front and back? All these hips are to the left and your left foot is behind.
I know I should probably just try it and see, but just thinking of the physics of it...if all your movement is in a forward direction and you essentially land completely sideways, like in your big darkfest hip, at 90 degrees...where’s all that forward momentum gone? Ok you’ve slowed down a little in the air, but not that much, you’re no longer facing forward so the bikes not rolling out of it like a straight jump. How come you don’t just ‘highside’ and get catapulted off the side of the bike as soon as your wheels touch the ground?
Most of your horizontal momentum is converted into vertical momentum towards the landing. You aren't totally vertical when you land a hip jump, you're actually leaning into the turn, as you would normally. Therefore, because the angle of the bike negates the remaining horizontal momentum, and the vertical momentum plants the tires, you don't topple over.
I haven't ridden a bike since a few months, I never rid a MTB since a few years, I've never ridden a FS. I have to get used to everything on my new FS, my back hurts.
So is this the beginning of a whip as Well? If so, other gmbn'rs say go up the lip w a slight turn, u say go off lip straight and whip/turn in the air. I'm so confuses!? When I turn on the lip feels like I'm driving to the side of the trail and I freak out thinking I'm gonna taco!
A whip requires you to carve off the lip, forcing the bike out sideways but keeping your trajectory straight. A hip require you to ride straight off the lip and is a change of angle and direction in the air, so its a bit different from a whip.
'click'? We're not sure what that could be! Are the levers loose? They may need a bleed if they're hydraulic or the pad spring may be catching on the rotor ever so slightly.
@askgmbn what hardtail would you recommend under £1000. I was thinking about the Boardman pro 29er is this a good choice. Also what dropper post would you recommend. Love your videos🚵🏻
SB Sailing voodoo bizango from halfords...and transX dropper post from bikediscount.de. Both cant be beaten for value..the bizango has won multiple awards over the past 5 years..and that seatpost is bullet proof...both would work out around £800 roughly
Blacke, I was on my 2008 stump jumper and I crashed and snapped my collar bone and it was because of my saddle cause I can’t drop it far enough would a drop down seat post be worth buying on but would it work so pls could u get back to me on that thanks Dan(age 14)
What mountain bike skill do you want to learn?
180 endo turns and fakies
180 endo turns and whips
Pretty basic for me, manual. It just looks so cool.
Oh and not falling off. If that counts as a skill ; )
Manuals
I was always taught to pretend my inside shoulder had been hit by a tree. Worked for me!

This helps a ton, especially the bit about not carving the lip
Respectometer just exploded now. Fantastic footage from a true boss.

Awesome as always! I’m desperately trying to improve my control and get more airtime. Sadly my skills aren’t keeping up with my ambitions lol

We'll be looking into this a bit more when summer comes around in the UK! We can't ride the jumps right now as they're too wet
THX MAN !

Now that I've built a 15 ft hip-gap at my home trail I better learn how to jump hips :D
I shouldn't be here, I can't even bunny hop yet let alone hit jumps
i can't bunny hop but i can hit jumps
I still can’t bunny hop
I can sort of bunny hop but struggle to get height
I hear you, I hope that in 2 years you have been able to at least bunny hop! For me I get scared when I'm carrying too much speed.
hitting jumps is easier than doing proper bunny hops
Please make a video how to set up a new cycle hub flange
Thanks and please teach more Technics...
Check out our MTB Skills Playlist if you're after something in particular! Maybe we've got a video on it already 👍

Sun cream Blake! SUN CREAM!!!

Most of your horizontal momentum is converted into vertical momentum towards the landing. Hi nice video
Where was this in South Africa? it looks like the Wellington, Paarl area

Which bike park is this? Didn't quite catch that...
@askgmbn my brake levers click when i pres them , how do i fix this and is this a problem? love your vids keep up the good work
'click'? We're not sure what that could be! Are the levers loose? They may need a bleed if they're hydraulic or the pad spring may be catching on the rotor ever so slightly.
ok cheers ill give them a bleed and see if that helps
The solution is to not use Shimano levers. I have had 2 different sets of shimano levers and they all clicked. It's a common issue with them.
Do a GoPro montage
fkn rad
cool video dude love your how too vids. can you tell me where to send my video for the dirt shed please got a good one for you lol

Martin Cantwell okay cheers for that my dad has a bizango and didn’t have much success looking for one a bit pricier but thx anyway
Blacke, I was on my 2008 stump jumper and I crashed and snapped my collar bone and it was because of my saddle cause I can’t drop it far enough would a drop down seat post be worth buying on but would it work so pls could u get back to me on that thanks
