My 9th grade science teacher got close to being picked. He wrote Krista a letter of congratulations and she wrote him back. He was watching the shuttle launch live, when it exploded. I can't imagine what must of went through his mind knowing he had a connection to her and the launch.

This is why I believe in destiny/fate/whatever one believes in. Your teacher was not meant to be on board the shuttle. It wasn't his time. Or it could just be a silver lining. Disappointment quickly replaced by relief for not being chosen.
My 6th grade teacher was also in the running.
My chemistry teacher was in the final 50. We all watched in horror. He was absolutely devastated. About one year later, he quit teaching. He made chemistry interesting and was a great teacher. He was quite brilliant. 😢

I watched it as a kindergartner on the TV in the gym. I’ll never forget it. My mom said that my school sent home information about how to deal with the trauma of watching it and how to help the children understand and grieve. I thought my elementary school was pretty advanced for thinking this.
I went to school with Christa McAuliffe's niece. I remember going out to the school parking lot to watch the Challenger launch. When it blew up hearing her niece crying out in sorrow in that parking lot was so devastating. We were all so proud of her aunt. Its something I will never forget.

Core childhood memory, every part of the day we lost the Challenger crew. My mother pulled me out of school to teach me about it and spend the day together.

We were in elementary school when this happened. Our entire school had TVs pulled into the classrooms to watch the launch live. Still remember this! It was awful!!!

I saw it too, I was in 3rd grade. I still remember the explosion like yesterday. Our teacher couldn't turn the TV off fast enough. Such a tragedy for her children, husband, family, and all those watching. 😢

Same, I was in 5th grade. Both of our classes were watching together on a TV in a little common area between our classes.
Being from Houston and close to NASA , I got to know a lot of the astronauts. It was such an emotional event. Everyone was watching from home, school and work. Our whole office was watching. It's still a hard memory to relive. We were so excited for krista mccullough to be the first teacher.
Bailey, thank you for sharing Christa McAuliffe's story. She was my teacher in 1983/1984. We all watched this tragedy on TV at school. We were all torn apart and devastated. While she was a strict teacher, she was also the kind of teacher who always made herself available when her students needed her. Watching this has brought back fond memories of Ms. McAuliffe and my hurt and sadness from January 28, 1986.
I can relate to having one of those type of teachers but never will be able to relate to what you went through knowing this teacher. I bet she was the kind of teacher that though strict had a smile for everyone. I had that sort of teacher for biology class. She was always there to answer questions just as you described Christa McAuliffe. I know it was an honor knowing her.
Your teacher was the closest I ever got to idolizing a regular person (not a celebrity or athlete) when I was a kid.

This happened during my freshman year in high school. We were going to have a "lesson" during an entire school assembly. All of my teachers were in tears after the Challenger blew up.

It was a psychological warfare attack.
All of those people were assigned new identities.

Growing up in NH we felt such pride even though Crista wasn't from our school. I was in study hall... I just remember the excitement as they wheeled in the TV and the complete silence as they unplugged it and wheeled it back out. I don't remember tears, just absolute silence. I think everyone was in shock.

I remember being a kid in school and watching this....I cant even imagine the families of those on the shuttle who were there and watching....so incredibly sad!
Watching this live in a school room. My teacher was so happy to share this with us. When it blew up, my teacher fell to the ground in sobs. I remember her crying. "She was my best friend. How did this happen?" It was heart breaking, still is.

It was my 6th birthday when the challenger was met with disaster. We (my Kindergarten class) took a field trip to watch the Challenger lift off from the viewing stations. I didn’t live far. Just south from NASA. I thought the explosion was part of the show. Us kids were confused. It’s forever engrained into all of our memories. All of us in this generation. Classrooms had a live feed all across America. While parents were working…most missing lift off. K-12 were watching it. Devastating.
I was in kindergarten in 1963, and my teachers dragged in a tv and showed us live footage of the shooting of JFK. I mean, I don't guess they showed The Moment Of, but it was still pretty devastating.

@@EmpressOfLaughter it was a private kindergarten. I went home and told my mother, it isn't the sort of thing you should show to little kids. I was right between the ages of Caroline and John-John and I couldn't stop thinking about them not having a daddy.
At least the people letting kids watch the Challenger didn't know beforehand; didn't turn on the TV _because_ something horrible had happened.
Anyway. I get how you must have felt at the time. In 86 I was nearly 30, and I still didn't want to think about Ms. McAuliffe's big adventure ending so badly.

I was in 4th grade when this happened. I was the first kid in the classroom that morning walked in and found my teacher Mrs Ramon sobbing inconsolably. I'd never seen an adult cry like that. We watched it on the news for hours that day. I'll never forget that day

I went to the middle school that was named after Christa Mcauliff and they had some of the best teachers there it's been over 20 years now and they have since expanded thier campus there are stories that it's haunted at night but I've never experienced any spiritual activity. When her shuttle exploded I was in elementary living in Florida they took us outside to see the shuttle going up little did we know it exploded as we were watching go up but I was in elementary so I did not have the slightest clue what I witnessed😢😢 😢😢😢

That with my classmates maybe 3rd grade. We all gasped and cried. Our teacher let us take the rest of the day off from school work. I still wanted to be an astronaut. Sally Ride was my hero. And we all felt like Mrs McAuliffe was our teacher. Too bad astronaut wasn't a job anymore by the time I got to college. This was such a tragedy. 😢

My paternal grandparents and great grandparents lived in Cocoa, Florida. I was a toddler, so I don’t remember it, but my family was watching it from the front yard. Some where in a tote there’s an album with photos of this. I remember growing up hearing them talk about it. Launch days were cool to experience being that close to Kennedy Space center. Mamaw had a brick home, but all her decorative wall stuff would rattle and shake when rockets were going up. It was so common, she’d look up from her paper and say “I didn’t know there was a launch today.” And then went right back to reading.
Yea, I had just dropped off my kids at school and come home to coffee and watching it on tv. My kids were all going to watch it at school !! I got my kids out early and prayed for the victims and families 🙏
It was such an exciting time! I even had a super cute astronaut Cabbage Patch doll that they made because of the Challenger launch. Our 3rd grade class watched in the school library. Such a horrific tragedy. We were all stunned. Teachers didn’t know what to say. Just so incredibly sad.
I was a senior in high school and recall watching it on TV in classrooms. TV stations reran it over and over again. It was horrid to see that. Something I will never forget.

Hey Bailey, years ago I watched a conspiracy video that suggested this was a hoax and showed that all of the challenger’s passengers are still alive. I can’t remember much but I do remember being convinced.

I was skipping school that day so I was home watching the TV when it happened. My brother was there as well so, I turned to look at him mortified. All I could think of was those kids she was a teacher too and her loved ones. Bc you know they were all watching too the horror they must have felt. Just crushing
My mom pulled her application to be the teacher sent to space because I was born.
My grandparents lived close enough they were in the crowd watching it in person. When my grandma passed I was going through her photo albums and found a picture of a cloud that was circled. Took me a minute to decipher her handwriting to realize it was a picture of the Challenger explosion from the ground

I was a young(ish) adult when this event occurred. I can remember seeing the explosion but looking for some sort of parachute that would hold the crews capsule. It never came and I just went into shock. I couldn’t believe it. Seven people dead and all those who knew them who had just lost friend/family was just so shocking

My mother and I were just talking about this the other day. It’s just wild that she competed with so many to just die for all to see.

I was reading about this recently because there is more than one tribute to Christa in my town and I have no idea why. It’s a small city in Michigan.
What blew my mind is that there was a backup teacher to go if Christa couldn’t. Clearly, Christina was able to go and we know what happened.
The next one this backup teacher was going to go on was the Columbia in 2004. She couldn’t go because the Columbia fell apart on re-entry in 2003.
She did ultimately go on a shuttle mission but ain’t no way I’d go if I was there. There’s not many space shuttles that had that happen and she was supposed to be on two of them. 😭 Her name is Barbara Morgan.
I was in 5th grade when this happened and I live in NH, the teacher in the 4th grade class the next room over was best friends with Krista. It was a very traumatic day, I still remember it like it was yesterday.
This story has a connection to the local history in my town. I live in Woodbine, Ga. A tiny town in Southeast Georgia. During the Vietnam war there was a company called THIOKOL CHEMICALS that had a contract with the government to make trip flares for the war. In 1971, the factory , sadly exploded and 29 people were killed due to the safety standards not being great. It took the victims families 17 years in court to get compensation and they got only a fraction of what they asked for. There is a short doc about it on PBS called Reel South.

I was in the 3rd grade and we were home on a snow day (I lived in PA at the time) when the Challenger disaster happened. I was super pumped about the mission because I was exposed to a lot of space stuff growing up. My dad, being an engineer, was very into the space program (as a hobbyist) and even applied to the astronaut program. I remember watching it on TV. It was awful. I went on to become and engineer myself and even worked at NASA as an ISS project engineer for a couple years. This was one of the pivotal events of my lifetime. The other was the 9/11 attacks.
This was so emotional for us. I remember being home from school that day and waking up to a rumble (explosion) me and my dad had to turn the tv on and saw what happened. So so very sad.

I was 14. We watched the Challenger launch and explode live on tv during class (the entire school did). 😱 The launch should have delayed from that technical issue. The public cared less than NASA did. Everyone was already used to delays.
I was 12 years old and had been allowed to stay home from school to watch the space shuttle launch on television as I had for several of them because I wanted to be an astronaut and was obsessed with space . That was the last space shuttle launch I ever watched. As I'm writing this, I can hear NASA testing a rocket engine.

They knew those rubber rings were not functioning properly and were told not to continue the flight plan , and the people in charge just ignored it and sent the ship off anyway, it’s disgusting!

I was actually in kindergarten when the Challenger exploded and I remember watching it on TV. Not quite understanding why all the teachers went silent and why they werent going to space or why the tv was turned off. It didnt quite click with my brain at the time.
I turned 4 in 1986. I didn't know about the Challenger explosion until my teen years, though.
I was in 7th grade when it happened Science class. We all asked the teacher if we could go outside and watch it and she said "No, if you see one space shuttle go up you have seen them all. I could've believed a science teacher would say that. Kids were running up and down the halls she opened the door to see what the commotion was and the kids said the space shuttle blew up. We all cried.

We heard it explode over us as we lived in the East Texas area the debris rained down on. It was traumatic to say the least. They kept finding debris all around us for months

My great grandfather actually worked for both NASA and Lockheed and was one of the people who helped build the challenger shuttle. What position he had and what he did on it though, I’m not sure.

I remember faking sick that day. I wanted to watch the Launch and I didn't know the school would be showing it. I was so scared when I saw the rocket explode.
From NH and I was 6 years old and 1 frist grade this happen and I still remember they gave us the next 2 days off from school then teacher explaining to us what happen.... then in high school they bring us to the science center in her name. Talk about messed up
I remember this. I was on my way to algebra class and when I got there the teacher said the lesson was cancelled due to the launch and then she wheeled in the tv…yes wheeled……we watched it live

My class wrote her a letter, 2nd or 3rd grade. We all wrote a short note and our names. We watched it live, too. I felt numb for days. It was so awful.
Saw the title and immediately knew it was about the Challenger. My hometown has the "Challenger Learning Center." It's a pretty cool spot to visit if you enjoy learning about space and space travel. I had a field trip there in 5th grade- coolest field trip ever.
My geometry teacher was in the running to go up and knew Krista. We were watching in homeroom but we heard her screams throughout the building. A very surreal time
