      I get halos around the exact same stars (as in the Elephant's Trunk image) with my L-Extreme filter, so it definitely seems like it could be an Optolong problem.

    • @TareqAstroPhoton

      @@DanielEspelidPedersen L-eXtreme or L-eNhance might both give halos around some stars, that is understandable, but with the new filter L-Ultimate they should worked out about to eliminate that or at least reduce it so much, i remember they produced first test versions almost beginning of this year or end of last year and then they stopped it to improve it, now they should made this already improved then, if not then it will be difficult to trust some of Optolong filters, many are happy with them and some aren't, me i have previous NB 7/6.5nm filters and not happy with them, but i bought UV/IR cut and also SII 3nm, hopefully those i can be happy with at least, i was planning to buy L-Ultimate this month, but this video above by Shawn and his comment just made me to postponed it, i might just go to another option after all.

    Thank you so much for the review! The inconsistent halos are what trouble me. At least with the L extreme I know what my halos are going to look like and which stars will probably make them. The halos from the ultimate also look a bit weird. Canceled my order of the L-Ultimate. Looking at the Antlia now. It seems to have better overall performance.

    Thanks! The appearance of haloes might be only on stars that are off-axis, and/or stars with lots of red or infrared emission. What was Mu Cephei like at the edge of IC 1396? Clear skies!

    Thanks for the video! I recently just purchased a IDAS NBZ (UHS version) and the non UHS version of this filter had halo issues when it was the NBX model. You would think such a well known filter manufacturer would have nailed this issue with this latest release. Either way that is a very narrow band pass but was surprised to still see some light pollution gradient in your image.

    Great video, the filter really confuses in my opinion. No halos on Vega, but halos on smaller stars, perhaps it's something to do with the star wavelength? (appears mostly on 'yellow/orange' stars? perhaps?)
    I personally find the small stars halo rather worrying, occasionally on bright stars - meh, ok. But when it happens on small stars that means any image could encounter that, so that's quite a no-no.
    I think I might go with the Antlia Gold or the new Askar 3nm filter.
    Thanks!

    I am happy to see that many here or elsewhere have been using L-extreme [or L-enhance] in the past and now wanting to upgrade to this new filter, i am lucky that i didn't make the mistake by buying those old filters in the past because i knew that the new ones will be out later in future, the waiting and patience is being paid now, so i have the option now to buy L-Ultimate or waiting for something could be slightly better dunno, but i think this L-Ultimate won't be any disappointment and also can last longer without needing for upgrade.

    Thanks for the nice review, Shawn. Someone else commented on this, and I agree that the halos seem to appear more on smaller, reddish stars rather than bright, white stars. Looks pretty nice otherwise, though. I'm not sure it would be worth the $$ to upgrade from an L-eXtreme, though. Might have to wait until more users post reviews. Thanks again!

    Very curious to see a thorough review of the iOptron skyhunter mount, I have one and me and a bunch of other are having tracking and guiding issues with it, I’m still able to image with it just not gettinh good sharp results as it trails from time to time

      Yes I've had problems as well guiding and stop tracking. There is word from iOptron that a firmware update is coming and a hardware fix which should correct the problems. Once I have both and get the fix done, I'll be able to test the Skyhunter again.

  • @LogansAstro
    @LogansAstro 2 роки тому

    Interesting that it isn't producing halos on the bright stars but unfortunately still seems to have quite hard halos around some of the smaller ones - perhaps those that are more red in colour?

  • @derekbaker3279
    @derekbaker3279 2 роки тому +1

    Very interesting Shawn. I am curious re the cause of the non-concentric halos around moderately bright stars. I wonder if there is a reflection/interference issue due to the filter reflections & the Bayer Matrix layer. The halos were green which would be the strongest contribution from the Bayer Matrix layer, if it is actually part of the problem. A question: Would you be able to stick the filter in front of a mono sensor (without a luminance or other type of filter in the imaging train) and see if the same halos occur?

    • @VisibledarkAstro
      @VisibledarkAstro  2 роки тому +1

      Some have suggested spectral class as a possible cause of the halo around certain stars. But hard to say without testing more. Your idea is good but at this point I don't intend to test it further.

    • @derekbaker3279
      @derekbaker3279 2 роки тому

      @@VisibledarkAstro Thanks Shawn! Given that a large portion of stars emit strongly or moderately in the middle of the visible spectrum, I'm not sure if spectral type would be an issue..Another possibility is that we're seeing is a 'light leak' through the filter caused by problematic coatings, and the 'leak' happens to be in the Green part of the spectrum. As for no further testing...can't blame ya....clear nights are precious & generally rare in southern Ontario, so you need to devote your time to having fun with various projects!
