'Wall-E’ was released almost one year exactly (June 27, 2008) after the Apple keynote that introduced the first iPhone (June 29, 2007), but accurately predicted (mostly) our reliance on technology for self service, and our trajectory for human interaction without the physical component.
And that’s only been 12-13 years. I remember wondering what life was going to be like in the future when humans were adopting to life with a BlackBerry.
1 thing I like about WALL-E that not enough people bring up is that if you isolate the parts with just WALL-E the story works, but if you isolate the parts with just the Captain the story also still works. It's 1 of the few Disney films that actually does a subplot that is just as interesting as the main plot.
i thought she meant container in that the AI could be put in any container (maybe a more practical one for whatever job it has) but we make it more familliar by making the container like ourselves
19:30 Hal was programmed to obey instructions given to him to the best of it's ability. He was instructed to keep secret and not reveal the true mission of the Discovery until they reached Jupiter. He was also instructed to complete the mission if the crew was killed. So logically the best way to complete the mission perfectly was to kill the crew and complete the mission itself. That way all mission goals are accomplished. It's perfect logic, Hal didn't 'go mad' or malfunction.
@mark bushnell not necessarily. If you make and program an AI yourself or have a team make it the way you want, the possibilities are endless. Once someone removes arbitrary laws and rules, there's no stopping someone or something that wants to do what it wants to do
@mark bushnell The point of the story was that they programmed HAL and gave it instructions but never considered the potential outcomes and conflicts, there was no indepth thought given (thematically accurate as humans are a fledgling race and Monolith was introduced to advance the race). There was never anything about HAL following societal laws or things.
Although that’s of course textually accurate, I always wondered why the instruction was “until arrival at Jupiter” and not some heuristic like “close enough”… Also of course that explanation is not included in the actual film itself, you need to read the books or watch the sequel (or read a Wikipedia article or other online discussion) to get that context.
I'm kinda sad that there were none of the eastern view of these things, with movies like Paprika, Akira or Ghost in the Shell... I think that would've touched on many interesting points
I know it was just an accident for her but for those who need to hear it: 1990 was 30 years ago not 20. I’ll wait here as you come to terms with that reality.
It‘s always very funny to me when my parents talk about their teen years (aka the 80‘s) and they always used to say stuff like „25 years ago“ but now it‘s literally been 40 years and they still haven‘t gotten used to that 😂
I love her, this video is amazing, she makes me want to know more about technology and how our society works. Last year in University I read about futuristic ideas in the 70' and how they thought technology would be in our every day life
A futurist should make a sci-fi movie based on their research that would be amazing Edit lol: apparently futurists are already doing that so sorry for being wrong lol b thanks for the knowledge
Literally! A lot of his story ideas came to him in the midst of psychotic episodes, and one way he dealt with the stress of them was to commit them all to paper as they were happening.
I remember seeing Wall-E when it came out and coming out of the movie both liking it as a Pixar movie but also concerned because I could totally see some of the stuff happening…as I got on my laptop with my tv on in the background and each time I was reminded that I missed what was going on in the show I was watching I’d rewind it to focus on what was happening only to focus back on my computer screen, just like what I do now with my phone/tablet.
3:10 May Rudolf's first role (as the nurse on the right). Fully committed to the character, in contrast to the other nurse/actor who isn't wearing a mask.
Oh this is perfect, especially when you consider the algorithim used by the UK government for exam results and in a sense determining people's futures and roles.
1 thing I've often wondered about WALL-E is how many humans were on the Axiom? We're never given an exact number, but it's gotta be in the 1,000s if not 10,000 after 700 years and multiple generations being raised on it. Also, it's suggested early in the film that there were other cruise ships out there besides the Axiom, yet they aren't shown returning to Earth at the end.
The scene where they are all gathered together during the showdown didn't show as many as we would think, makes me wonder if an active eugenics program system was in place to keep the population down.
Lol, subtitles at 12:45 spelled qubits (quantum bits) as "cubits", the ancient unit of distance measurement. (e.g. most famously used to measure Noah's ark.)
This video makes a little bit paranoic so I think I'm going to put my cellphone away and star mine manifesto lol btw Wall-E and Matrix scare me the most
Q: How can you tell when a video is directed and/or edited by an amateur? A: They constantly use digital zoom, thinking (mistakenly) it will add visual interest, whereas all it actually does is take the viewer out of the experience. Way to go Vanity Fair!
Tim Hutchinson Never formulate something as a universal truth like you just did. You should really only speak for yourself especially if it is subjective like this. Frankly it’s a joke I have to write this. Anyhow, the editing in this video never took me out of the experience and I think it actually did make the visual more varied.
So she literally imagines things for a living?? She's basically Walt Disney! What an awesome job! I want to be a futurist person. Probably I'm not smart enough but it would be pretty cool.
5:19 is a bit of an ignorant take. Claiming that we’re entering a “new era” where you are judged on biology instead of wealth and education is basically pretending racism and segregation never existed.
How does one get this job? Because I've always been into tech and scifi ever since I was a kid (I'm 43) and predicted loads of stuff that's come to fruition. I'll charge half of what she does.
Seriously, none of this will happen. The hints of these topics that exist right now are already being dismantled simply because we're aware of how horrid the worst extreme could possibly be. That is exactly why these movies exist and why anything close to it can never exist.
Ok, this lady lost me completely when she started talking about how society is going to separate people based on whether they have gotten a covid vaccine. The left is powerful, but they're not THAT powerful.
Gotta admit it's a bit disappointing the futurist doesn't realize the matrix series is a metaphor for being trans. The two directors, the wachowski sisters, literally said this.
Well, it’s a lot of things at once! It’s about automation, it’s about surveillance, it’s about oppression, it’s about (trans) identity; it’s also Plato’s Cave, and probably a dozen things besides!
'Wall-E’ was released almost one year exactly (June 27, 2008) after the Apple keynote that introduced the first iPhone (June 29, 2007), but accurately predicted (mostly) our reliance on technology for self service, and our trajectory for human interaction without the physical component.

I'm kind of glad we have that technology now that we can't go anywhere.
this is a terrifyingly accurate observation that is undoubtedly going to keep me up for hours for the next few weeks omfg

It would've been dope to see some episodes of Black Mirror included in this!
that would be highly interesting
Black mirrors futuristic episodes always end up eerie
I realize it's pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
Yeah seriously, why wouldn't they include Black Mirror?
Great idea!! 💡👌
Normal People: "Body"
Futurist Amy Webb: "Human Container"
look where else are you gonna contain a human
i thought she meant container in that the AI could be put in any container (maybe a more practical one for whatever job it has) but we make it more familliar by making the container like ourselves
We, spiritual beings ,been calling it the suit..nothing to it! It is a suit and will always be..

I would love to see a Part 2 with Webb looking at "Children of Men", "AI", "Elisyian" and other movies!
And the original Alien
Don’t forget Minority Report
I would like to thank the algorithm for showing me this video about itself on my feed
I second this
"oh man this is so dystopian and dark im glad we aren't like this"
expert: we are exactly like this
"oh"
This episode is so fascinating. Please bring Amy Webb back for a part 2!
I'm kinda sad that there were none of the eastern view of these things, with movies like Paprika, Akira or Ghost in the Shell... I think that would've touched on many interesting points
fingers crossed for part two
Amazon is becoming the buy n large corporation from walle
Love WALL-e but to me it's more like AUTOFAC - "Electric Dreams" - Episode #2
@@cyber-psych2503 exactly

A... Futurist..
Professor of... foresight ..
She is the oracle
in her youth.
"There is no spoon"
❗❗❗
A futurist should make a sci-fi movie based on their research that would be amazing
Edit lol: apparently futurists are already doing that so sorry for being wrong lol b thanks for the knowledge
mark bushnell no
BruizeyUA-cam yes
The Expanse is something like that
Futurists are involved in a lot of movies. The future of Minority Report was largely thought up by futurists.
I could listen to her talk about her career for hours
Wholeheartedly agree‼️
Philip K Dick was a crazy scary genius
Nahh
Literally! A lot of his story ideas came to him in the midst of psychotic episodes, and one way he dealt with the stress of them was to commit them all to paper as they were happening.

Amy was really interesting, please bring her back.
I would love to see this same expert look at dystopian movies to talk about the plausibility.
3:10 May Rudolf's first role (as the nurse on the right). Fully committed to the character, in contrast to the other nurse/actor who isn't wearing a mask.
I had no idea you could be a futurist but makes sense
I think she is the most entertaining and interesting expert VF has ever had
Disagree. Have you seen? ua-cam.com/video/uv7fzypk0t8/v-deo.html

Yay! I was waiting for this. Loved it
Would love to hear her take on futuristic literature/graphic novels.
Love films about the future. Good topic.

No ‘Idiocracy’?
Turn this into a show!
The big danger of big data is not the large corporations but the government, in a sense it does not matter as nothing can stop it.
please never stop these
23:03 When I watched it in 1990... and here we are like 20 years later...] 1990 / Total Recall was like 32 years ago. 😐
Warning: DO NOT WATCH HIGH. I messed up. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Lightweight

Shhhhhh.
Wondering if she's going to touch on the movie Strange Days
Why no Battlefield Earth?
23:11 uh, no. here we are 31 years later (she meant 30, not 20. did she not want to age herself knowingly?...lol)
5:19 i thought this was kinda older until i reached this point
Would anyone be able to explain why is the camera focus constantly switched on and slightly off the person talking?
It’s telling that audio of a futurist has audible vocoder artifacts. Sounds like her video was Skyped in.
That woman is passionate I love it
This is pretty fascinating. Didn’t know much about futurists until this.
the matrix isnt the future. Its the present
I thought it was "any-future", like it could take place at any point in time
Bless this video series
She should play Cyberpunk and Mass Effect :D
5:17 she predicted the vaccine problems
so informative loved this!
i want more of this..please
Learning about the possible future makes me want a candy bar phone.
Well said about data powering the AI in the section about the Matrix. Gave me chills.
Amy, when are we getting a levitating skateboard. 🤨
I've been waaaaaaitiiiinng!
The way she spoke about the covid19 vaccination scared the crap out of me..It's cold to hear that ,also very true
Wholeheartedly agree‼️
Should have shown the Back to the Future 2 2015 clip
0:56 somehow i think i read lape
This woman is awesome lol
Sorry lady but I live in the 60s
that kokeshi doll in the background ❤
"We don't predict the future" BUT we just analyst .... to predict the future. This is satire right :D
So she literally imagines things for a living?? She's basically Walt Disney! What an awesome job! I want to be a futurist person. Probably I'm not smart enough but it would be pretty cool.
It's hilarious how intent humanity is on destroying itself.
She has such smart points specially during the matrix part
should have mentioned the Turing test on Blade runner....
You should have her watch movies that are past the timeline of the future.
Ex. Back to the Future 2, 2001 a space odyssey, the time machine...
Check space odyssey off that list.
@@Ash_Howl right, I see it now.
so basically.............. i should be worried for my future grandchildren xD
no that would be unneeded stress. who knows they could adapt?
She's awesome, this was great
5:19 is a bit of an ignorant take. Claiming that we’re entering a “new era” where you are judged on biology instead of wealth and education is basically pretending racism and segregation never existed.
18:56 yeah they’re called humans
Loved the movie Ex Machina! Scary realistic view what could happen with AI?
Is that a Dora the Explorer nesting doll to her left? Lol
12:31 I wonder if we are the alien🤨
15 books? Those are rookie numbers, Amy.
What makes u a futurist this is a genuine question because are they not always wrong when they try to predict what is going to happen
I'm a herbalist and entrepreneur business man and see future timelines when I use said herbal. 😂😂😂😅💀💀💀 fawwk! What a dumb title and job. 😅😅
I wonder if she knows who’s going to win NBA 2020 Finals
I would have added Moon to the video.
I remember Dolly The sheep 🐑
Amy Webb is fantastic!!
How does one get this job? Because I've always been into tech and scifi ever since I was a kid (I'm 43) and predicted loads of stuff that's come to fruition. I'll charge half of what she does.
Futurist: The Matrix is a very clever metaphor
Philosopher: The Matrix is Technopunk Descartes
She is like the neil tyson of futurism
Seriously, none of this will happen. The hints of these topics that exist right now are already being dismantled simply because we're aware of how horrid the worst extreme could possibly be. That is exactly why these movies exist and why anything close to it can never exist.
I love anything futuristic
"which is profound" You mean terrifying. The word you're looking for is terrifying.
Bummed there’s no Artificial Intelligence
5:19 LOL nope....
Ok, this lady lost me completely when she started talking about how society is going to separate people based on whether they have gotten a covid vaccine. The left is powerful, but they're not THAT powerful.
Lol spoke to soon
knew i should have applied to future school
listening to her talk is painful
Blade runner = sacred text means I’ve lost any and all respect for the person who said that 😂😂
Fideist?

So,she is an Oracle!!
Very interesting
5:10 So she started the Q conspiracy theories!
Ikr. . . I was thinking of that sheep's name! "Dolly"...right
ahh....The Matrix.
a movie so twisted and convoluted even it's directors ended up with a crisis of identity.
👏👏👏
