At what point in time do we as a nation understand that our best interests lie in assuring our neighbor has the ability to participate in ascending our nation rather than selfish motives of individual greed. We all want our children to have more of everything that is good and less of what is bad. This should be what gels is together as a nation.
Nations are built on the log like layers of citizens who spend their minutes, hours, days and decades building their existence and thereby a country. Occasionally, giants emerge so that we can see further when we stand upon their living shoulders. Meacham and Matthews are such men. They help us see further and more clearly.
Most days it's hard to figure out what mortal sin he hasn't done. He lies in general 8 times a day consistently, avarice is checked every day, gluttony, sloth, coveting married women, i could go on.
"we get the government we deserve" that, I feel, was very profound. With all the school shootings and the division, not just politically but socially, I think he's right.🤔😥
For centuries - the upper class women were seen as the property of the father or the husband. And upper class men had voting rights - voting rights were based on land ownership. Working Class men and women didn't have voting rights. To get freedom - and equality - it had to come in steps and those steps were changes in the thinking around ownership. Upper class had to give the working class the vote - but only to the men. As they viewed that a vote should be given to the head of the household and only men were the head of the household. The opinions of the time - was that if you gave women the vote that a father, husband would have two votes and a single man with no children would be unfairly treated as he would have less voting power. They imagined that all women would vote the same as their father or husband? So over time the view of ownership had to change. Doing away ownership of the working class - doing away with slavery - then giving women their freedom. The patriarchy
I think you understand some of the reasoning behind women not getting the vote, but not the root of it.. The idea of men having voting rights comes mostly from the idea that they can defend property, they can fight in a war whereas women couldn't, so in fact when you can defend property the the logic followed that you have voting rights. This stems from when there was nobility. The vote was for the aristocratic class, because they were the large land owners. They fought for the king to defend the larger property of the kingdom, so since the aristocrats were instrumental in the king's ability to raise an army the aristocrats had the vote before the peasantry.

Delightful ... One notes that Jon brought his A-game re: socks, whereas Chris needs some coaching.
