Visiting during off-peak times is such great advice for getting a deal on a hotel (and not just in London)! Using a hotel's 'calendar view' can be an easy way to identify peak vs. off-peak dates. Sometimes there are big conferences and conventions that the average tourist might not know about that can cause hotel rates to go insane.
I know there must be a thousand ways to stay cheaper but our trips to London are our big extravagance every couple years so we rent an apartment via One Fine Stay. I can't imagine staying in a hotel because we love being in a neighborhood, shopping at the local market, and eating our meals, particularly breakfast in each morning. We only come over when we have enough frequent flyer miles to fly free and so we give ourselves that extra bit for lodging.

I often find weekends cheaper than weekdays. Mainly due to the business and corporate guests not taking up hotel space. Travelodge for example regularly have rooms on a Sunday night for £40-60 compared to £100+ in the week.
I bought my hotel in Bloomsbury on Priceline express deals and got a really nice hotel for a little over $100/night USD. Splitting it with a couple friends makes it super reasonable.
When I booked my hotel, I signed up for their rewards program and ended up getting 10% off the rate just for signing up. Also, because I booked directly with the hotel and not thru the travel websites, I got free wifi.
I always used budget chains like comfort inn and ibis when I went on my own. Then I went with my dad once who is all about luxury 5 star hotels whenever he goes on holidays so he booked two rooms in Hilton Waldorf on Aldywch, right near, which was unlike anything I'd ever stayed in before and probably won't again since it costed £300 a night with another £15 for breakfast... I'm not a fan all those massive share room hostels in London with 8 to even 20 per room...they are so cheap but I'd rather a private or even twin room, even if the bathroom is shared. I quite like budget chains, and the Generator hostel looks pretty nice as well.
Yeah I know what you mean, I think the shared rooms are for a certain point of your life, I used to love it but now as a 28 year old who has more disposable income for travel, it's not my thing. However the private rooms can be great, in fact I have stayed in private rooms in hostels that were nicer than some budget hotels I've stayed, Generator's being one of them. It's a good compromise.
I booked my London hotels for June 2017 on Agoda and they offered 10% off promo and free breakfast. I also got into the St. George's hotel in pimlico for 45 pound a night in late June 2017! Loving watching your vids! Bernie in sydney
