  • I was listening to some piping on the radio yesterday and heard “Farewell to the Creeks”. Reminded me that I used to sing Hamish Henderson’s song “51st Highland Division’s Farewell to Sicily” so I had to give it a wee go again. Down by the sea felt an appropriate place. More about the song below...
The 51st Highland Division was an infantry division attached to the Territorial Army. They had been serving in North Africa during the second world war when they were reassigned, in April 1943, to Operation Huskey- the invasion of Sicily. After a successful operation lasting 6 months the Division was ordered to return to Scotland to prepare for their upcoming involvement in the D-Day landings in Normandy.
Hamish Henderson was serving as an intelligence officer in the Division during this time. He wrote this song during the time when the troops were waiting to be embarked for the journey home, and after hearing the pipe band of the 153 Brigade playing “Farewell to the Creeks”, which is the tune he set the words to.
