I actually did. Not because she was a Mary Sue, but because Rogue One was pretty clearly a revision of the Dark Forces story. If you were to set Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor alongside Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors you'd see a strong resemblance. You can't even convince me the name "Jyn Erso" wasn't a manipulation of "Jan Ors".

Bruh, most people who go see movies don't even know (or even care) what a Mary Sue is. Saying Rey is a Mary Sue makes every damn protagonist in Star Wars a Mary Sue or Gary Stu. Jyn Erso, a well written character? She's just as dull and generic as any protagonist in media. And a Mary Sue, as well. But who cares? Let's just enjoy theses movies for what they are. The thing is, Dave Filoni actually wrote a good, strong, and dynamic female character. In fact, he wrote multiple. Ahsoka and Hera were both strong female characters that had multiple dimensions to them, unlike Rey.
And both of them is 2x diversity risk than rey.

Creating a character that shows no fear? That's bullshit, no matter if it's a male or a female. A good character shows a somewhat realistic emotional reaction towards what is going on around them. And the only real people who lack fear in dangerous situations are psychopaths. A good hero character is someone who has fear and doubt but finds a way to overcome it.
Adding to what you said, having no fear is good when they EARN IT. When they start weak and frail, but learn, work, and earn it. It could also make a good “badass” character, like Boba Fett. What it’s BAD for though, is a main character who is already everything they need to be. THAT’S bad writing

Arigato Senpai Star Wars theory is cool, yeah, but you can still definitely see in the Vader episode that’s out now that he’s mostly writing what seems like subtle fanservice. I think you're forgetting the fact that Luke's role in the sequel trilogy was Dave Filoni idea.
Glenn Johnson he had no influence on the trilogy
She is Palpatines granddaugther, makes sense for her to that strong in the force. Darth Sidious is the only force user who achieved his full potential between 15BBY-4ABY in canon so far. Luke as grandmaster only happened in legends, so far in the mandalorian he is either a high ranking jedi knight or newly ranked master, which is nowhere near Palpatines level.

I heard she was a good character and well written but honestly, the writing of the female characters in the main series are so dreadful, I couldn't give a shit.
Real, feeling character? Luke was relatable, started out an innocent farm boy. Goes through pain, overcomes it. Loses his master, had doubts with himself. He had his dark side in episode 6 where you can tell that luke is somewhere between the light and dark. He felt real to me. His father was pretty much the main villain and one of the main focusing points in the series. (I know vader wasn't originally meant to be his father but I would definitely say it serves the story well and I wouldn't have it any other way) The rise and fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker has been one of the main themes of star wars through the whole shindig and his son needed to save him. To say that's two dimensional is just beyond ridiculous. He tries to make it seem like luke did nothing, zilch. Just opened the door for Leia. Don't forget that he destroyed the first death star too, amongst many other things. (Including saving all their asses on bespin) All leia did was get captured by ewoks and wear a slave bra and a collar. I'm joking of course, every incident in star wars is important because all are connected through the force. She saved him on bespin too. Even jar jar managed to help the battle on naboo even if he was being clumsy and didn't quite mean to. Things like that may seem funny, but really have importance in the bigger picture. As for rey, a jedi doesn't lose their temper and yell and scream all the time. Rey has this habit of doing that. Luke was young and had much anger inside him, but his ability to remain calm in moments like the first battle with his father made him so cool in my eyes. When I was a kid I wanted to be Luke and it was because of his bravery and demeanor.
Now we have the new movies.
Fighting and choreography deteriorate to baseball swings. The sequel lightsaber fighting is so off balance and lacks fluidity, form and camera angles as well. You practice how you want to perform and when you compare and see the difference in preparation between the prequels and sequel movies it speaks volumes. I guess that's how they wanted it? Idk it's almost laughable in a way, but I love star wars and I always have. Disney, come on. You could definitely do a better job.
One big thing that wasn't just me, but something many other star wars fans I know complained on:
Kylo ren simply wasn't the best villain, he kind of sucked. He seemed so powerful against opponents with blasters who have no powers that they know of. But even finn locked sabers with Kylo. Just imagine if it were darth maul or someone of his caliber. Kylo Ren just doesn't have any control of his movements and he lost my respect and got docked from being a cool villain when he went and threw a temper tantrum like a child.
One very important part of making a good character is to establish a purpose, a reason for them to be in the story. Star wars has been winging it left and right since the start, sometimes it works like with "No, I AM your father." Sometimes it doesn't and it shows.
I kind of accepted that Disney would screw things up and they almost fooled me into liking it. I will say that I did enjoy rogue one though. They actually make good characters and then they have to die.

Mary sue
I see a lot of people kind of hating on what Filoni says, especially about Rey. Keep in mind that this speech was done way back in 2016, and we have the benefit of hindsight. When Dave gave this speech, the only major thing done by Disney Star Wars at the time was Episode 7. And at that point, neither Rey nor the ST was nearly as controversial as it is today. Episode 7 and it's characters were well received at the time, and Dave was looking forward to the next step in the saga just like any other fan.

Yeah I suppose that makes a lot more sense, because really the problem's people have with Rey isn't that she is a female lead (Ahsoka is a huge fan favorite). It's that she is unrelatable (she has no character flaws), That her achievements especially in the Force Awakens seem unearned (she defeats the trilogy's big villain with no training or really any trials) and in the end it really did not feel like we got any sort a character arc or development, which was huge with Ahsoka's Charcter she had started out as an anxious, implusive teenager and by the end of Clone Wars she was a wise, compassionate, bad-ass. So I mean a lot of these problems at the time, Dave could have just been optomistic that they would be addressed and flushed out in the coming two films, in fact I probably would have assumed as much, especially sense fans were being very vocal and they're very reasonable things to ask for in a character.

Even without the context of the entire Sequel trilogy, this guy has a bad philosophy. Star Wars EU content, for 20+ years, was made for all ages, not just kids. Disney has zero interest in an older demographic. This guy thinks people are saying all of Star Wars should be dark, we ain't.
@@Sangth123 That's true, there were even 'junior novels' literally made back in the EU. But I don't think he has a bad philosophy. Maybe about the EU, sure. But when it comes to the core of Star Wars, and just the Canon in general, he gets it. Watch his more Star Wars-focused interviews, speeches and panels, if you haven't already, and you'll see. But yeah, that's also true. But I have seen other EU fans want Star Wars to be darker. I've seen some complain about things being too "lighthearted" "childish" etc, etc. I'm sure it's not the majority of EU fans, but there are some that are indeed like this and it's probably because they're also very vocal too, which is why Dave feels this way. Sam Witwer has also mentioned this too, on his Twitch, about Star Wars fans wanting Star Wars to be "badass" and "dark" all the time as well.
I hate that these people try to blame everything on sexism, NO ONE cared that there was a female lead, we cared that the movies weren't written well and the characters were either tropes or had no character of their own. Also, Rogue One was pretty well received, last I checked. I'm getting tired of everyone calling people sexist because they failed at making something good; as if they're purposely using female leads for the sole purpose to have something to blame it on if their movie doesn't do well.
So what about all the harassment Kelly Marie Tran got? Seems to be like the whole fandom is getting lumped together with a tiny, extreme subset. And that’s why he’s talking like this. I didnt not like Rey's character because she's a girl, I didn't like her because she's plot armor incarnate with terrible writing and motives for what she does. I loved ahsoka because she feels real and she has real problems to overcome that aren't bested because she's important to the story. Rey comes off as nothing more than a plot device for a terrible story designed to shovel as much money into Disney as possible by tugging on the exact same plot lines we got in the original trilogy. Leia was a good female character because she faced hardships and overcame them, she wasn't just gifted strength by the magic of back story and told us all to just go with it. I love strong, well written female characters just as much as I love any strong well written character but Rey is neither of those things. She's an awful character with no reasons for us to like other than "she's a woman"

I’ve always enjoyed the 2003 Clone Wars more. Fits with the prequels a lot better and is more concise with the Star Wars saga as a whole. The 2008 Clone Wars is fine, but I never really got into it like so many others. Ahsoka is a fine character, but she’s not the best Star Wars character ever like a many people say. She’s not as interesting as Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, Leia, Anakin/Darth Vader, Yoda, Mace, Palpatine, Padmé, etc. She became less annoying as the series went on, yet I never became a big fan of the character. It’s also apparent that George Lucas wasn’t as involved in the 2008 series as much as he was with the 2003 series.

Second, LucasFilm employees have been known to be forced into saying things just to keep their jobs ex. Sam Witwer and Mark Hamil being forced into retracting his criticism of TLJ . Luke didn't impress anyone until halfway through the film. Neither did Leia-Han still is reluctant to give her the time of day until the end.
Strong women have always been part of Star Wars, Dave, it's important that they stay in there. But you know what? Rey isn't one. If you can't show weakness, then you can't show strength. You have to earn it to be a strong character. It's called a character arc. I know you hate those, Dave, and I know you hate the Star Wars characters given how you write them, but that's part of them. Rey needed to be like Luke or Anakin or Padme-dragged around and kind of useless for the first half of the movie, then she can grow and take charge. Not win the day singlehandedly, but use her skills to help. Luke and Anakin were pilots. Padme was given the responsibility of leadership. In the last act of the first film of the trilogy, they finally take action, show intelligence, courage, and previously established skills

My first Star Wars movie was Empire Strikes Back, the darker one and I absolutely loved it, I must have been 6 maybe. Disney doesn't make movies for kids, they make childish movies.
Yeah, everything Filoni makes is EXCLUSIVELY targeted towards kids, adults can't enjoy his stuff, it's completely childish. I can still enjoy the original Tartakovsky Clone Wars as a fully grown adult almost as much as I enjoyed watching it for the first time as a child, but when I watched Filoni's 2008 Clone Wars when it first came out as a child, even I felt that it was far too childish, almost as if it was designed for toddlers and had no consideration for any other age range.
Star Wars aren't "kids films" like Filoni likes to think they are, they're FAMILY films, meaning that everyone of all age ranges are supposed to be able to enjoy them. Filoni has no understanding of the concept, he can only make media targeted towards specific age groups.
And he discredited the EU long before Disney took over. Still does it to this day.

Filoni rightly makes the point that young boys and girls can relate to either gender, directly contradicting Kennedy who said girls can't relate to Luke
He also insists Star Wars is for kids - the movie with a smoldering torso lying on a lava beach. He panders to children. Young Jedi Knights and Jedi Apprentice should be the blueprint for how to market Star Wars to kids without pandering to them. But he's never cared for the books.

It's easy for people to say there's enough male leads in the past but as an Asian male, I think Hollywood skipped that demographic.
