She would have been. But she didn't want that fame (she was once surrounded by this hoard of fans..and she didn't like how trapped she felt) and refused to do frequent performances to accomplish them as it would also leave her with a damaged voice..
I read an interview she gave some years ago in which she stated that she found "Madonna-like" fame terrifying and she did not want to be a household name.
@@na1959 She refused to sell out. So did Stacy Lattisaw. So did Eva Cassidy. Substance and civility and self-respect are so lacking in today's "stars".
Linda..copied Barbra & Judy Garland. Un-original Style. Mediocre actress on stage. Pretty Voice BUT she just Didn't have the IT Factor to become a real 🌟
I had the ultimate priviledge and honor of watching and listening to Linda Eder when she was performing on broadway in Jekyl and Hyde. To say that her performance was exceptional and amazing is an understatement. What a voice!!!!
I was 8 years old and I was introduced to Les Miserables and to the magical world of musicals because of Linda Eder. I loved her then and I love her still.
No one can expressively nuance a song like Linda Eder - even when she got first national exposure in 1988. It's as if she melds with the songwriter in her delivery. For a superb treat, listen to her "Silent Night," any day of the year.
Why isn't she more famous? An amazing talent with such a clear voice and sound technique. She has an interesting habit of closing her eyes but with her left eye slightly open when belting the bigger notes - I've seen it on several performances of hers over the years.
OMG! Linda Eder is HUGE Broadway STAR with MANY credits and recordings under her belt...That clip was from 1988! Just Google and don't ask stupid questions...
+lukngud I knew she was famous on Broadway, I was just wondering how she didn't have more mainstream recognition like other Broadway stars as she's such an outstanding talent. Just think before making insulting comments..
Not necessarily mainstream "careers" but Bernadette Peters, Liza Minelli, Julie Andrews, Idina Menzel and Lea Salonga are all quite well known, but I'd never heard of Linda Eder, nor seen her on TV or any kind of mainstream media.
I still have her old cassette tape with me, her very first album "Vienna" that I bought long long time ago and I really admire her, she's a Goddess . . .
I've been a Linda follower for many years and had always heard about her singing I Dreamed A Dream. I'd never actually seen or heard the performance. Thank you for posting it. It means so much. Linda is marvelous.
I watched this performance in a hotel room with my parents .We all sat there with our jaws dropped..lol I was taking the GRE the next day which was a test to get into grad school for music. I cannot even tell you how her voice has inspired me my whole singing life.
IMO Linda sounds better today than she does here. She has more control over her voice and it also has a maturity to it that makes the lyrics more meaningful.
I must confess that I had not heard about her (pardon my ignorance), until I heard a recording of hers on the radio. I knew then that I was listening to a fine singer.
Wow... MUCH HIGHER THAN THE ORIGINAL KEY!! She is a soprano after all :) no low Gb's for Linda! Her vibrato is much quicker in these early performances... she's learned to smooth that out.
I never knew Linda was a Star Search champion. I remember seeing her CD in the jazz section of record stores in the '90s, but didnt know anything about her. Then I went to a Michael Feinstein concert and she was the opening act. She sang "Why Do People Fall In Love?", which I immediately feel in love with. I bought the CD this song is on and I wondered why this song was not a major popular hit. She married Frank Wildhorn who writes scores for plays and his songs became a major part of her repertoire. She definitely should be more well-known than she is.
waaaoouuuuuu! i never ever heard a voice as much appropriated for this song! i'm stucked on my seat! what a voice!!! i'm really moved! plus, she is so beautiful! and the way she sings is absolutly incredible! this song is so beatiful, and she brought all the things we need! BRAVOOOOOOOO!
I had wondered where and how Linda Eder started when I first watched her here on UA-cam. Now I know.. thanks. Like a fee others discovered and given their first push in tv talent shows like this. She's gone on to a good singing career. Good hir these shows
Gorgeous voice and gorgeous lady. She sang a duet of "Crying"(Roy Orbison) with Clay Aiken at the taping of his PBS special to be shown in August. Can't wait to see and hear them together. From what I hear it was an absolutely beautiful blending of voices.
I have heard countless performers take their best shot at this song, and not one of them reaches me like Linda Eder. Her vibrato is clean and effortless, and her voice is bell clear through the entire vocal range, which is considerable. To perform this well with less than optimal acoustics and limited time to rehearse with this orchestra, this is indeed an outstanding performance. Her version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is perfection.
I think Gold is my favorite song of hers. But I also think her 3 song medley is one of her best the short version of what kind of fool am I gives me goosebumps every time when she is belting near the end of the song.
Linda Eder belongs in a class with Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra, and sarah Brightman as one of the most beautiful female voices in the world. she can melt the hardest heart with her voice.
Ruthie henshall was better than this, tho quite comparable, I just prefer ruthie. Linda is very good though too, particularly her man of lamancha rendition
linda is one of the greatest singers to ever live. timing was not on her side in my opinion . when her records came out the music industry had switched from powerful great singers,
Betty Buckley can. That is who she instantly reminded me of. I don't know why I only discovered her TODAY. By watching some Women of Broadway compilation
Completely agree with everyone. Linda is one of the best vocalists I've ever listened to. She should be more famous than she is.

At least she's better than you and your life@@PhilAlumb
she conquered me with the song Man of La Mancha. She sang it better than all the male singers.
Agreed. She totally blew the roof off with her version!
I had the ultimate priviledge and honor of watching and listening to Linda Eder when she was performing on broadway in Jekyl and Hyde. To say that her performance was exceptional and amazing is an understatement. What a voice!!!!
I so remember this, Star Search showed us more talent than American Idol and The voice combined.
Linda eder is a tremendous talent and the most humble performer.
God given beauty and talent! What a gift! Thank you for sharing!

Name 5 Broadway Stars with Huge Mainstream Careers...
Not necessarily mainstream "careers" but Bernadette Peters, Liza Minelli, Julie Andrews, Idina Menzel and Lea Salonga are all quite well known, but I'd never heard of Linda Eder, nor seen her on TV or any kind of mainstream media.
Michael C Hall (Dexter)..Taye Diggs,, Jessie L Martin..Mandy Patkin..Betty Buckley...
One of the best vocalists ever!
I still have her old cassette tape with me, her very first album "Vienna" that I bought long long time ago and I really admire her, she's a Goddess . . .
I have had the great priviledge to see many great artists in concert and Eder always gives me chills from her opening to her finale.
That last note, it wasn't like she hadn't shown off enough already! 😄💖
I love her voice, she’s my go to every time when I need to be uplifted and entertained. She’s is incredible.
I've been a Linda follower for many years and had always heard about her singing I Dreamed A Dream. I'd never actually seen or heard the performance. Thank you for posting it. It means so much. Linda is marvelous.
Linda has an amazing voice. I wish she would do a studio recording of this song, I have heard many artists do this song, and like her version thebest
She has this on several albums now.
I've seen her many times in concert, and she's really great! Thanks for posting this video.
A voice of an angel.
I watched this performance in a hotel room with my parents .We all sat there with our jaws dropped..lol I was taking the GRE the next day which was a test to get into grad school for music. I cannot even tell you how her voice has inspired me my whole singing life.
What a gifted singer! Even in this old video and it's issues, you can hear how powerful her voice is. Thanks for uploading this.
She can sing sweet and tender and powerful too. Love her!!
IMO Linda sounds better today than she does here. She has more control over her voice and it also has a maturity to it that makes the lyrics more meaningful.

Even these days she does not have a consistent low G-flat.

I remember wanting to BE Linda Eder when as a girl I watched her on Star Search!
Not only does she rock it, but she rocks it a key higher!!
Why isn't this amazing woman a Disney princess? I say this because it would be the best way for her to be recognized worldwide.
LMAO. i graduated in 88 and that sure is 1988 hair! (the hostess) i love linda eder. she has a beautiful voice.
I had wondered where and how Linda Eder started when I first watched her here on UA-cam. Now I know.. thanks. Like a fee others discovered and given their first push in tv talent shows like this. She's gone on to a good singing career. Good hir these shows
listen to her recording of Man of La Mancha.. you will be blown away
Burt Collins oh I know!!! And the Jekyll and Hyde recording is amazing too :)
I remember this!!! I was 8 years old!!! Linda Eder introduced me to Les Miserables!!! I love her! :)
Never really cared for this song but Linda can make any song likeable. Hard to believe she was only 27 here.
Never saw this before. Nobody sings like Linda Eder. Thrilling voice - like no other!
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT LINDA EDER WAS ON STAR SEARCH!!! She certainly didn't disappoint...
@brookemeganmartin
agreed! never thought I would hear someone better than Streisand, but I saw her live and she blew me away!
Just wonderful. She could sing the phone book & make it sound incredible. 🎤🎼
absolutely , she is fabulous
Gorgeous voice and gorgeous lady.
She sang a duet of "Crying"(Roy Orbison) with Clay Aiken at the taping of his PBS special to be shown in August. Can't wait to see and hear them together. From what I hear it was an absolutely beautiful blending of voices.
Sometimes the best of us don't get the recognition they deserve👍😀 you are the BEST
This is the best version I've ever heard of this song,
GIVES ME THE CHILLS WHEN SHE SINGS, WHO COULDEN`T LOVE A WOMAN LIKE THAT.

definitely can't deny she's a BIG talent!!! just great!
love linda, thank you so much for posting this xxx so good to see a star in the making xxx
Thanks for posting. I saw her in concert
I think Gold is my favorite song of hers. But I also think her 3 song medley is one of her best the short version of what kind of fool am I gives me goosebumps every time when she is belting near the end of the song.
"Even now" is it for me.
Linda is a head and shoulders above the rest. No one beats the queen!
Thanks for posting this. This was my mom's favorite singer. Whata fantastic dress.
Absolutely amazing.
Such a BEAUTIFUL voice!!
From Minneapolis? She was born for Broadway... Love me some Linda Eder.....
Right up there with Streisand, if not better,. What can you say after hearing this? Just an incredible voice.
Just saw Linda in San Francisco in December - front row seats - she is still AWESOME!
I'm getting to see her from the front row, for the first time, tonight!!!
It's incredible how much Linda Eder and lara fabian look alike
Yes, I even joked that she's Lara's less famous sister and my sis believed it.
she sets the gold standard for singing and loveliness!
I would know that voice anywhere... I do love Linda. :)
So this is 36 yrs ago...how old was she then? Now...shes simply incredible! ❤
I just realized I've never heard Linda talk. wow.
Fabulous simply fabulous, I wish her the best.
Linda Eder belongs in a class with Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra, and sarah Brightman as one of the most beautiful female voices in the world. she can melt the hardest heart with her voice.
I do so remember this.
Love this Lady!!!!!!! A...❤️
She's from Anoka, Minnesota!!
Effortless greatness
😢 this woman should have been as famous as Barbra Streisand I don't understand how she missed out
She was the best I've ever heard felt chills in my body when she sang. That song
One of my fav singers!!!!
thank you so much.) she is the best
Don't let the orchestra drowned out your beautiful voice, you didn't need them on Star Search
THIS IS THE WAY THIS SONG SHOULD ALWAYS SOUND. NOONE ELSE CAN DO IT...AND THAT INCLUDES sara briteman
AGREED!
Ruthie henshall was better than this, tho quite comparable, I just prefer ruthie. Linda is very good though too, particularly her man of lamancha rendition
Also Linda MUCH better than Susan Boyle. Susan I one belting soprano, but has none of the nyances that Linda has.
@@susanshort6740agreed. There is no comparison.
linda is one of the greatest singers to ever live. timing was not on her side in my opinion . when her records came out the music industry had switched from powerful great singers,
freakin' effortless!
THERE`S NO BETTER THEN THIS
Her voice has matured and is even more beautiful today.
I'm looking for a recording of this but it seems she hasn't done one . A SHAME!!!
Simply amazing
Amazing voice
Great performance!!! Lovely voice!!!
Betty Buckley can. That is who she instantly reminded me of. I don't know why I only discovered her TODAY. By watching some Women of Broadway compilation
It's like Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland in one person!
She's so good damn
Am I going to cry? Omg I am
@2:58 --- loved it, but I think that's the reason why my voice teacher told me to never close my eyes when singing! LOL!
Breathtaking!!
I had a chance to see her in Jekyll and Hyde in Houston in 1990.
I turned it down
😱😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Terrific. Just terrific.
Wow, an upbeat version of I Dreamed a Dream
The best Lucy ever...
Damn, what a beautiful, beautiful woman --- then, in 1988 --- and now. ~:
Dang. How’d you like to follow that performance.
PREACH.
@Fencie87 You have stated exactly what I think. I could not have phrased it better. There is no-one to compare to her, in my opinion
One of three people that can pull off Over The Rainbow.
Linda Eder is the best in her era, where singers sing r”eal” songs with hreat vooces
Wow so cool
Nice voice and vocals
Nice?! Try spectacular!!
I have always been a fan of Linda's demon possessed eyes she gets during high notes... example at 3:43
geez louise, did she ever do the role in theatre? To me, she is better than Barbra, better than them all.
