Shear wall & Deep beams - Will you model as Pier or Spandrel

- ETABS provides options to model shear walls and slabs as shells. This can be membrane or shell thin or shell thick. When you adopt shell thin, there is also an option to model as pier or spandrel.
Many civil engineering job aspirants practice ETABS and are confused on ETABS modelling aspects related to pier and spandrels. When to model a pier and when to model a spandrel.
This Video explains demonstrating all options of pier and spandrel modelling using ETABS.
If you have to perform shear wall design in ETABS, then you have to model a shear wall as shell thin and assign a pier label.
Same way to design a beam modelled as a shell like that in a coupler beam or a deep beam, it needs to be modelled as a spandrel and we have to assign the spandrel label.
The structural analysis will be same as long as these are modelled as shells. Spandrel and pier labelling will only affect the result interpretation of the forces from ETABS and its design in ETABS.
It will be easier to interpret the result in ETABS in a form suitable for manual design if we label wall as per and deep beams as spandrels.
The video also covers the below mentioned structural aspects on shell modelling.
When to model shear wall or any shell as a Wall.
When to assign a pier label and how to assign a pier label
When to model a beam as a spandrel or shell
How to assign a spandrel label
What is the difference between pier and spandrel.
What will happen if a beam is modelled as a slab and shell thin in elevation
The structural video explains all the structural behaviour of shell modelling and demonstrate the shell behaviour in an ETABS model

Excellent explanation for those who want to dwell deep into subject.
Usually I do not comment on UA-cam but this was something to the point explanation I needed since long time
Thank you for that😊
Nice to know the video helped you.
Thank you for the thorough explanations. Greatly appreciated!
You are welcome 🙂
what do you do?
God bless you sir for this great Knowledge.
Thank you 😍 God bless you too
Generally, I model Coupling beam less than 1000 mm depth as frame but more than 1000mm as Spandrel as shell element.
I think in pier vertical reinforcement governs whereas in spandrel horizontal reinforcement will govern.
It depends on designer how they want model it according to its use in structure.
It depends on the situation. Not always as wanted by the designer. He needs to know the way these works and then decide.
Do we have to assign pier to behave as shear wall?? and If so then we don't need to assign pier to basement wall(When it is not designed as shear wall (designed as cantilever slab))
Any thing if you want to design the wall, you need to assign a pier label.
Basement walls can be slab or wall but if you need design, it needs to be wall and assigned pier label. It is predominantly a wall and not a slab
Even in low rise buildings if we are getting depth of beam above 750mm should we design it as a shell?
Why dont you try it in a large project itself and check 🙂
You can make even the stick work. It all depends on the situation.
In rc structural wall system can we model the beam instead of spandrel for high rise building as per is code??
Depends on the size and location of beams. Are you referring to Mivan shuttering system
Please make a video on vertical earthquake analysis in ETABS
Unlikely to do a YT video. It may come as a separate advanced course. When no ETA 🙂
It would have been great if you would have explained pier and spandrel labelling as the labelling shown in the video is incorrect
It is easy to make loose comments.
1. Know the reasons
2. The content of the video and the context is not pier label. It is about pier vs spandrel

It's not about making some loose comments. The labelling was the other extra information in the video which I highlighted.
Also please check the description of the video. You have clearly written that the video shows how to assign pier and spandrel labels as well. So that is what I pointed out that the pier labelling is incorrect
@@shareqinamdar8903it is surely as you are commenting with out knowing the purpose and intent. It may be wrong to achieve what you are assuming.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
