  • How much does it cost to walk the Camino de Santiago: The French Route?
We started our journey in Saint Jean Pied de Port and walked to Santiago de Compostela over 57 days, but for the Camino Costs tally we include day 0 in Saint Jean and the day after in Santiago = 59 days.
I have NOT included any cost involved in getting to St Jean (flights, taxi from Pamplona etc) or any gear specific to the Camino even if we bought it along the way (backpacks, wet weather gear etc.) These things are highly variable.
All costs where you see $ are AUD not USD as we are Aussies 🇦🇺
Accommodation - we stayed in Albergues (hostels) most nights, but a few hotels as well.
A rough guide per night across all types of accommodation is:
•A dorm room bed is €15 per person per night
•A private room with shared bathroom is €40 for 2 people per night
•A private room with ensuite is €50 for 2 people per night
Our average per night was €40 ($66)
We spent a total of $3,933.57 on accommodation.
    Food - our biggest expense!
We spent $4,133.85 on food and drink in bars, restaurants and albergues.
    That's about $70/€43pd for 2 people.
From morning coffee to pilgrim menu and everything in between!
Groceries - yep mostly food, muesli bars and snacks, a few microwave meals. But this category includes deodorant etc. so I've kept it separate to the Food and Drink category.
    We spent $476.17 total
    That's about $8/€5 per day
I've bundle a few miscellaneous expenses into "Living Expenses", $603.27 which includes:
•Laundry: we got very good at hand washing as we went but spent $46.47 on washing machines and the occasional dryer.
•Bag Shuttle: there is a fantastic service where you can send your backpacks to your next lodging! It took us a couple of weeks to work it out ☺️ but then we often sent my backpack.
    This cost us $256.25
•I've included a bank ATM fee because that's life on the Camino 😡
Luckily only one €7 fee ($11.58)😱
We have had to use cash quite a bit and made multiple ATM withdrawals.
We had a 80/20 split of Card/Cash transactions.
    • Our "camino passports" cost $6.60 and the certificate of completion (we also bought the certificate of distance and document tube) $13.10
    • I've included postage to Santiago along to way, this is the cost of lightening our packs! We are not the only ones to do this.
We sent 6kg to Casa Ivar $42.99 from Logrono and 3kg from Astorga $54.26 (this cost included storing one parcel for up to 30 days at the Santiago Post Office)
    • Casa Ivar $172.07 we posted our suitcases and the parcel from Logrono and they stored it until we picked them up in Santiago. A bargain at €35 per item!
That is a total of $9146.86 / $155.03 per day.
If you are planning a camino, I think you can budget $150 per day for a couple.

Thanks for the detailed information on cost. I find your cost to be right in line with others have said of 2023/2024 of 50 euro a day per person.
I think your total sounds high as it was 59 days for 2 people.

I did the Camino twice , alone, and yes;sometime I splurge by taking a single room. But the cost you detailed are huge. Of course I always carried my backpack abd with flying from Italy and the train I did spent less than 2000euros and the first time I did it in 45 days, the 2nd time I took buses to cross the large town to avoid the suburbs. One of the purpose of the camino is frugality and it is a bit lesson. I did it when I was 68 and 69 year old.
