I ordered three Cold Steel Gladiuses, seperately of course, I'm not arming a legion here. All three arrived not just lacking bevels from tip to ⅓ of the blade down, their grinds were not even finished, they were still just the blank from being stamped.
Recap: 1/3 to almost half the machetes blade was still squared, completely unground, there was no edge, therefore no bevel, still had the black coating covering it, the tip had an actual square instead of a point from where it was stamped. All three of them, and i ordered them a month apart each hoping they would have caught it as all the reviews on amazon for months was, "hey wtf is this." Could i hace finished it myself, yes. Did i pay to finish it myself, no. Even before this logo change youre pointing out that looks straight up counterfit, im hoping they're not changing logos again already after lynn kept the same font/logo for 40 years only varing in size. That's a sure way to lose more of the giant portion of customers lost after the merger. If i didn't think Lynn Thompson knew it was time to get while the gettin's not mandatory DEI diversity hiring / Brandon Administrationi would have said GD you Lynn Thompson to 🔥." But he knew and he protected himself from the guarantee of his life's work being devalued by the actual fascistic regime who just pulled an ooopsy dooopsy on Saturday. I thought the same thing at the time, i agree with Lynns decision to sell then and still, however for the true customers, not the faemboys, it has been like sandpaper on a raw b-👌🏻. Thanks Joey, for saying out loud, really gee golly gosh darn loud, what we are all thinking snd have been screaming through unanswered emails since the old stock ran out of certain products and as hyper inflation readys itself to annihilate the west, all the products. We want quality products stick "uhhderrrrr" man, ok. Raise the digity dang price if ya haff to, but give us the same shite. Guarantee your "absent parent" company spent more money burning 40+yr old bridges and swapping out materials, designers, workforce than you would have keeping everything in place. But that's not what globalism is about, is it brethren. Its about making absolutely everything intolerable from beloved tool brands like Lynn Thompson's Cold Steel to former real meat being turned into molded m-®π∆ ☠️🧪-bug-paste. Thanks alot. I just received a bushman (what a mythical knife!!!) But now it's made in china. Finish was good and sharp, I bent it 45° and it withheld its own. I'll post a video soon, I need to push it a bit more 🫡

I’m glad I bought a ton of Cold Steel knives when the sale was announced. I spent way too much and the wife was mad at me for a few days. But I didn’t care. A man has to do, what a man has to do. I got enough blades to last me and my sons several lifetimes.

I'm getting to where I want to continue to use 5160 spring steel for most of my knives. It's just tough as hell and takes massive abuse! Yet it still has enough carbon to cut really good, yes you loose edge retention time but that's the trad off. Joe X is a solid soldier tester! His mind is brilliant to me!

Thanks to you, I'm glad I bought my CS machetes (jungle and two hands all terrain chopper) prior to the steel change! Btw, try Rinaldi and Flores Cortes machetes! Flores Cortes are made in C55, 1055 basically and made in Spain. Regards!

I bought CS shovel and kukri machete 10 years ago. Excellent quality. Wanted the jungle machete but couldn't afford it.
I just bought a CS trailhawk and bushman. Trailhawk is still made in Taiwan. Bushman is now made in China. Sharp, but not welded anymore.
I bent it about 45° and it withstood.
I'll test it a bit more and then post the video.

Properly tempered 1055 HC steel has a HRC of 58-60 vs 65MN steel having an HRC of 51-53. Basically 1055 being harder, longer lasting than softer 65MN steel or snap vs bend. 7:14

1055 can only be heat treated to around 53rc and had .55% carbon.. 65nm has .65% and can be heat treated to around 55. Not sure where youre getting your information, but more carbon generally means a higher hardness and less bendability unless its alloyed with other elements like vanadium. Both of these are simple carbon steels and 1055 has more ductility while 65nm will hold its edge longer. Both are more ductile than 1075.
Why i am glad i bought all my cold steel before gsm took over. Besides my bushcraft twinpack knives all south african and taiwan.

Cold Steel, Lynn Thompson period, had their machete's made in China before South Africa/Lasher Company started to make them for Cold Steel.
I read not much steel composition differences between the 65mn vs 1055 , a little more carbon there is in the 65mn.
The Kershaw Camp knives are also made of 65mn steel.
It's al up to the heat treat how it will fare.

What I'm really concerned about is the 4034 steel now being used in some of their higher end fixed blades. My research suggests this is garbage steel for budget kitchen knives similar to 4116 Krupps. You'll definitely need to test some of those.

I just got six different cold steel machetes. All that did well in your previous tests and ones your recommended. Out of the six only one was from South Africa. Today is the last day I can return most them, should I return the China machetes? Do you think they're worth keeping at around $30 each or should I return five and buy one good one? I bought them because the durability, price point, and to have multiple options. Now I don't know how well they will fare. I wish they would state if they're the China or South Africa ones beforehand.

CS is going to shit so fast!They came out with a new folder called Caledonian Edge in cpm 20cv or whatever. It looks awesome but it's 450$ in the US and they got Stckman advertising it as family heirloom to pass down to generations. Wtf? I been loving CS for almost 30yrs because of the awesome affordable craziness and Demko designs. Time to boycott, I'm not buying any of this shit.

The 65Mn is the same hardness as the old 1055, but over all the 65Mn is an upgrade in every aspect, should be higher toughness and slightly better edge retention (unless it is very badly heat treated or not really 65Mn). I found 65Mn holds an edge slightly better even if it is rather soft, so I am not mad. Although the grinds aren't convex anymore out the box, so the edge might take more damage if you don't put the same edge on both.
But the grips are also slightly different, some a little longer, or a little less wide. Guess the molds are different now. And the Kukris have rubber grips now, which I think was hard plastic on the south africans, the rubber is much more comfortable than any of the plastic grips BUT it might come loose since there is a small gap that moves when you squeeze the rubber just like with the Recon Tanto or SRK.
EDIT: And to all the people knocking chinese forges heat treatment, they have been using 65Mn for decades and can make pretty good blades from it, there are a lot cheap, usable swords in 65Mn around and they are tough as anything. Although this depends on which forge, not all are crap. There are worse contries to buy blades from.

@@joex At that low a hardness (around 50HRC, 65Mn can easily take 55HRC and still be extremely tough) I would not think there would be much difference, although my 65Mn Cold Steels are a lot stiffer - that could also be the added thickness as well (old was 2,8mm new is 3mm but the 2mm blades are the same now and then). Unless CS chose very badly for heat treatment that is (the only thing they could eff up is wrong heat cycling, the hardness is as mentioned the same), they had a lot of trouble with swords some time ago, but that was the taiwanese forge.
But I am interested how they stack up.

The Cold Steel Chinese War Sword machete is a real "Todt Schalger". That has been tested and the test results even surpassed some real Chinese War Swords.
The Cold Steel Tactical Katana is also very capable and an excellent "Poorman's" training, wilderness sword. Mr. Lynn Thompson, did an excellent job in conceiving and bringing it into reality!

I would be more concerned about the heat treating, which will probably be worse coming out of China. 65Mn is equivalent to 1066, which is a VERY small improvement over 1066. If those blades are bending and rolling more as 65Mn, then they are definitely junk from China.

I just bought a Gladius Machete from Cold Steel and it's advertised as 65MN steel. The advertising for 1055 steel still exists in some places.
On paper, the steels should be very similar but I'm eager to see your destruction tests.

Looking forward to the tests. I own both South African and Chinese machetes. So far the only difference I’ve noticed is the China ones are much sharper, but I don’t use them enough to know if one is tougher than the other. Kershaw uses 65mn in their machetes and I’ve seen them take some abuse.

That’s why I will only buy old stuff off of eBay if I want a coldsteel. I sold my new Trailmaster. I plan on getting an old one. I’d rather spend money and have the good knife than garbage. I have old Bark Rivers, all my knives are older now. The only new knife I bought was the Case Longhouse and a few others. Can’t wait to see Joe X trash the cheap ColdSteel.

Went to the Cold Steel website and all their machetes list the steel as 65Mn carbon steel BUT they never listed them as made in China . I wondered when GSM would start cutting back on quality to save a buck and I wonder when they will have all their knives made in China instead of Taiwan .

@@joex Their description is more explicit than Cold Steel's own website where they did not explain they had changed their steel from 1055 to 65Mn and more importantly that they are no longer made in S. Africa but are now made in China . I'm afraid that GSM will do to Cold Steel what has been done to other knife manufactures by going to cheaper Chinese steel and quality control . Very sad

The 65Mn steel is a Chinese GB standard spring steel. In the name, the "Mn" means Manganese. It has Manganese content of 0.90~1.20% and carbon content of 0.62~0.70%. This steel has low hardness (~54 HRC) but great toughness. So the 65Mn steel is not a bad choice for large blade or may even be better than the 1055 steel. We will see your test results.

Sounds like the ones advertised as 1055 that come instead as 65mn should be treated as fraudulent knock-offs. 65mn is going to perform much worse than 1055 at everything you might want these tools for. Is it manufacturing location roulette, or did they switch and the remaining good ones are just running out as the stock cycles?

I bought the jungle machete recently because it was invincible in joex old test, disappointed that the steel is not as advertised. I knew the new ones were from China but thought that it would still be strong if made by 1055 now i am not so sure i can trust it in heavy use.

cold steel sucks, they make a 'unbreakable'' baseball bat which i use, and have broken 4 of them so far. i sent photos to them for their blog, and the told me my photos don't meet thier standards. but honestly, we've all known for 30 years the make crap.
