Thanks! Yeah I put a lot of time into the thumbnail but when I am trying to make it funny it's entertaining to work on. I am trying to do these primers for everyone more often so people don't miss good upcoming games. It's time to hit up Darius next with that collection coming in February too!
i know im randomly asking but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
Another GREAT vid that pulls on the nostalgia strings. I recently just sold all of the Cotton games that I had and you are not joking on what they can go for, especially the Duo version (sold for $515) and the NGPC version (sold for $390). It was time to thin the herd and no more collecting for me, but interested in trying the remake....thanks for that info and keep up the great work on these vids!
Thanks I really appreciate that. I always wonder if/when that day will ever come to sell of parts of my collection. I am honestly just happy being able to play them regardless of how, so I might, but the thought of giving up my PCE favorites is painful. I may end up with my originals that I kept from when I was a kid, I can never sell those babies. But it's only a few. The better all the FPGA gets and how perfect the experience is, the games really just serve for nostalgia.
I've owned the X68000 version for over 15 years now, and while I did of course notice the flashing keyboard lights timed to the music, I'm embarrassed to admit I never realized how different this version is from the arcade. I kind of always assumed it was a near arcade-perfect port and not much more. (Guess I haven't taken out my copy of Cotton Original for PS1 in a while to compare, but I guess considering the information you've given in this video that might not have helped too much.) I've always been a die-hard fan of the Turbo version. I even managed to finish the second loop in that version get the end credits. I was planning to make a video on our channel about why the Turbo version is best, but now after watching your video I'm not so sure anymore.
I don’t blame you I also didn’t know this version until some friends told me to check it out due to all the improvements. Graphically it’s without a doubt a cut above the others. I’m not sold if I like the new bosses better so it’s kind of a give and take. And of course the pc engine version has the best music it’s just insanely good. So I will always go back to it. As far as the original game goes I prefer the pce version too much more than PS1 or others. It’s in fact the “best” and the 68K I consider the best remix. I’d be curious to know what you thought of the actual gameplay when you do play it since you’ve beaten the pce version too. Which you prefer.
Kind of hard to describe, but the PCE version "feels" like a Hudson shooter, and that appeals to me since I grew up playing Gate of Thunder and other Hudson shooters probably more than shooters from any other company. It's Hudson's touches to the gameplay that I always felt gives the PCE version the edge, maybe even more than the music does. Hard to not be biased though, since the PCE version of Cotton was the version I grew up with. It just feels right to me.
Thanks and appreciate the feedback, I'm glad you dig this one. I had fun making it. I only have Cotton 2 for my Saturn so far, they have just gotten so expensive. A future collection with the later games would be a nice follow up. But if you haven't yet, you'll enjoy this x68k version it's really quite good.
Awesome job again, man! I am always happy to collaborate! I didn't know the differences between the ports, but I couldn't expect less from the X68000 version. More shmups suffered drastic changes on this platform like Thunder Force 2 and Undeadline, both having additional content compared to the original versions.
Thanks man and I made some great use of your footage so thanks again for doing that. Undeadline is actually the number one game I want to try and play on the x68K just for myself. As I really like it on the MD and can only imagine how cool it is on the Sharp. Same with TF2, that will be a really good one to talk about when I eventually do Technosoft video as I was planning.
Another awesome video man. Can’t wait for the game to release and have the CE preordered. Didn’t know about the 2 minute and 5 minute modes. Cotton comp in the future? I hope so. Always love the humor in your videos as well.
Thanks buddy, I'm glad you did. I am just having fun and messing around making those silly bits, but as long as most others enjoy it I'll keep having fun with it. I learned about those score modes too this week while researching the game, so here is hoping they turn out well and have plenty of depth. If the community votes on doing them I'll be happy to facilitate it.
I cannot wait for this new Cotton release. Bravo for mentioning the Dark city productions custom mash up version. My friend Sarumaru did the artwork on the music cd. Excellent job as always going over all the ports.
Did he really? That's cool I should've mentioned that, I didn't know. I've always wanted a copy for myself and missed it, but am trying to get in on the next batch coming this year.
Thanks! And welcome. I have some really fun and useful series I’ve made so I hope you find a lot more that sparks your interest. Currently working on a huge every mega drive shooter reviewed video with 70+ games that should be ready in a couple weeks.
Now that you have an amazon Japan account it will be much easier to order in the future too. It’s good you made one. I’m looking forward to it too. Am I responsible for this happening? Lol
@@ShmupJunkie Why is everyone getting the Japanese version? Just for the extras? Or was the US version not announced yet when this video came out? Anyways, can't wait for mine to get here in two days! (US version.)
@@mrhobs Yes I made this video way back when the US version was just a promise. I would hope the new English release has just about everything included. Either way I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. And the game has some complex mechanics so having the English tutorial and instructions should be really handy.
@@ShmupJunkie That's cool man, and seriously, thanks for a sick video! Both your recent Cotton videos went in more depth than I could have hoped for. I had already ordered it, but still cool to see all the details, comparisons, and history. Been interested in this series for several years but never dug into all the versions or anything, so it was great to get a proper sense for what I'm getting into before I start playing. I like to appreciate franchise history. Here's hoping for... I was gonna say more Cotton on Switch, but didn't they announce a flipping brand new Sequel!? No disrespect to the remake, but I hope the sequel is... a bit better. (Still looks like a blast, but I'll definitely be playing the old version first.) Oh and yeah, hope it comes with an instructions booklet. Occasionally a standard Switch release (yes, I got the 40 dollar version) has a great little fully illustrated manual, like Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. OK that was long, keep up the good work, recently subbed, but liking what I'm seeing so far!
Sweet! I hope you're able to get what you want when they make the next batches. I've been happy with all of their remasters and often play them instead of the originals now.
Thank you for this awesome video, this is exactly what I'm looking for and am so grateful right now! By the way, in a generation with too many wild and narcissistic people (no offense), it's so great to be able to see someone as friendly and good natured as you who has the patience to share your knowledge and experience on gaming contents ^^
Another great video! You're my favorite retro gaming content creator. I've actually never played this game and now I'm really excited to go check it out.
Friend of mine has started calling me the herald of hype 😂, but I pretty much just try not to make videos or talk about games I don't care for. So if I am making something on it most likely I think it's worth the effort. I'm discovering how cool many x68K ports were and this one was definitely the best version of this game I'd played. I'm looking forward to it quite a bit too.
Nice to see someone show Cotton some love! Big fan of the PC Engine Super cd port and yes one of my favorite osts of all time! Can’t wait for reboot to release, very informative video I didn’t know much about the sharp version and I am excited to play it! Another great video Shmup Junkie thank you !
I myself knew about the Sharp port but had never had a chance to play it until this week. And playing it only solidified me wanting to own the Reboot as it's such a nice improvement over the arcade. As much as I will always miss that awesome PC Engine music.
Great video! Good to see footage from the x68K and arcade versions. I’ve been playing the pcecd version on mister in prep for the remake and really enjoying it. Difficulty level balance is just right, like you said.
The x68K version is awesome. Get your fill of the PCE port for now and you'll enjoy the Sharp port when it's out. And the Mister is a killer way to play PCE games, I have been using mine on and off too.
Excellent video again Junkie! Loving the skits more every video, I literally lol with them. I have to mention that this reboot is being developed by Studio SiestA of Trouble Witches Origin fame. They never made their passion and desire to make a Cotton game a secret though, Cotton was one of the characters of Trouble Witches Origins as DLC (also the most OP) and they sure know how to design good score mechanics on a shmup so I'm looking forward to that score attack mode on the reboot. If anyone reading this wants even more Cotton action, perhaps consider buying Trouble Witches Origin and the Cotton DLC, they're really worth it as both Cotton games and a shmup on its own. Keep up the good work Junkie! Smoke em if you got em
Thanks man! You're right I think I did hear about the Reboot being made by them but it totally slipped my mind. That's good to know so I hope they do it justice. The original sharp version is already there to play, so they can play around with the mechanics and make the new game more to their strengths. I've never actually gotten to play trouble witches yet myself, but I have been seeing it everywhere. Once this Reboot comes out and fingers crossed it's good, I can make sure to mention them and Trouble Witches in the follow up video. And yes, it was about time Timmy made a little comeback. I enjoy doing these dumb skits, some people don't like them but I think majority response is most do. More importantly I do so I'm not hanging it up yet.
Haha thank you. Another perfect comment to save and highlight in my portfolio when I approach M2 and try to convince them they need to hook me up with early copies to review.
Awesome review, I love how the triple screen comparison effect worked out. The style of this game reminded me a ton of Sorcer Striker too. Glad to see the Sharp X68000 getting some love, you should check out Cho Ren Sha 68K if you haven't already, it's a stone cold classic.
I have so many x68K games I would love to play, but each and every new game you try to get working is like a unique new adventure and headache lol. It would almost be easier to use a real one. But if that one is awesome I’m on it. Undeadline is the one I’d been eyeing as I heard it’s awesome too compared to the mega drive port.
Wow, pretty cool video! I had only heard of the Panorama Cotton game, which seems to be a sequel, in the video made by JonTron. I had no idea there was a whole world of ports of the original game! Thanks a lot for the cool review!
Yeah the original got so many great ports, and extremely unique ones too like the PC Engine and Sharp versions. Both well worth checking out if you like the original game in general.
According to UBO it's the same devs as Trouble Witches. He had high praise for the scoring mechanics in that game so it bodes well for the time attack modes here.
Sweet! It's a bummer it's a bit pricier there due to the exchange rate into USD, but it's nice to support a smaller company like that than give more to Amazon, so I certainly see good reason too. I'm guilty of using amazon a lot since it's cheap and easy, but in these cases it's good to support the smaller publishers as long as the prices are not unreasonable.
Oh yeah? That's awesome then to know I helped get the word out. Some people aren't too into the series while others adore it. I'm a sucker for fantasy and dark occult themes in general so I'm a fan. It's pretty easy to pre-order the sets on Amazon japan and not too late. There are pricey sets but the basic game around 40 bucks is very reasonable to me
@@ShmupJunkie Its nice to read you once again ! How have you been these days ? Totally agree, love the Fantasy setting and had my first encounter back in the day with the PC Engine version and as well the Sega Saturn Cotton. The OST is just done right from beginning to the end. Its one of those who empower you while playing and make you feel invincible ...like you want some ? Come and get it :) As you mentioned Falcom and the Y's serious did some excellent work there. If you are into this kind of music and in the video it surely looks like then I can just recommend you to check out a Japanese guy going under S.S.H. He did some great covers as well some original composition. Rock & Synth. Just awesome melodies and tunes. Will be checking Amazon now. Cheers
I've gotten a few requests so I most certainly will plan to. It would be cool if this collection does well and they do a future release with those two games and Boomerang at some point in a collection.
i generally don't spend much money on the hobby (or at least in big splashes) but i decided to treat myself and import a pc engine, guessing 2-3 years ago AND get a ssd3 from Terraonion, my wallet bled, but the fun you get in return is amazing especially if u like shmups! If you like retor gaming in general a mister may be the next best thing, as much as i love my pce, if i had gotten my mister earlieri think i would have not bought it (from a gaming only perspective, i love seeing the pce in my little gaming desk ofcourse!)
The last two years have given us a whole lotta Cotton! Lol. So glad I could clear it up. Honestly this game and the new Rock n Roll that released last year are the two to be aware of. They are both excellent.
I always enjoy these comparisons! I think sometimes people believe these older conversions aren't worthwhile now we can play the arcade versions in an emulator, but if you're a fan of the game it's often interesting to see the differences. Disappointed the special edition version doesn't come with a Cotton wig. Shameful missed opportunity.
If no red wig at least a large commemorative Willow! 😬 It's great to play the arcade originals they were often the best version, but in some cases not, like here. The Sharp was awesome, but even the PCE version is worth playing with the killer music remixes.
Thanks for the video and to YT algorithm showing me this video unsolicited. Was just remembering about my need to preorder Cotton but can’t decide PS4 or Switch
I'm glad you found me! I've been doing more previews like this and just released one for the Darius Cozmic Revelation collection. I'm always glad when youtube recommends me out more, I never know how that works. If performance is your priority the PS4 ports are usually the best, but the Switch games sell for more down the road. They are more collectible as a physical. I'm looking forward to testing them out though and see how they perform once it's out soon. The m2 Aleste collection performance on Switch was smokin!
Isn't it! I always hear how killer Sharp ports of some of the games are... Undeadline being another one. So when I finally played it this week I loved it. Now I just wish I could insert the PCE music tracks into it lol
Don't say I didn't warn you. You may get lucky and it works right off the bat. Or you will spend hours on google trying to set up virtual hard drives, load a proper OS, or load disks correctly. It's hit and miss and depends on the game. Good lucK! haha
@@TheElectricUnderground There is PX68k, which it seems to emulate it well enough, it can be a pain to get the bios or the games working sometimes tho.
Great video as usual, I had only played the Super Famicom version back in the day, so it's cool to see the original version here. I also have pre-ordered the game at Amazon, looking forward to play the original X68000 version - cool you had Filipe from Shmupsbr to show off his 68k playing Cotton with the blinking keyboard LEDs.
It was really cool of him to record that for me, and he is honestly always so helpful in so many ways for me. I am always trying to highlight other good people in the community like him as much as I can. Believe it or not, the Super Famicom spin off is one of the few I never got to play, and still haven't. I'll rectify that when I get to do any future Cotton sequel videos, but it always looked like a beautiful game visually whenever I saw it.
@@ShmupJunkie you two do a great job with shmups, it's always a pleasure checking out new content. I'm on the general side of games, though my gameplay videos are mostly from shmups LOL. I'm working with Filipe on some joint content, and he's definitely fun to work with, so I know where you're coming from 🙂.
Hey! Glad you loved it enough to sub. I've made quite a bit more just like it with a mix of humor and nostalgia while making sure there was lots of in-depth tech detail to go along with it. If you liked this one, there's quite a few more you may too.
Fantastic and informative video Junkie! Quick question, do you happen to know if either the PCE or Turbo versions of Cotton contained the music tracks on the disc (like redbook format that you can play in an actual cd player)? I know a lot of disc games did back then and I'd really like to add that T's soundtrack (and game) to my collection.
As far as I know, yes you can play the Cotton soundtracks from the PC Engine or Turbo CD game in a player. Everything after the initial track which is data is the music and sound. I did it all the time with many of the games. Stick with buying or finding the PCE version, as the Turbo Duo release is huge bucks due to its rarity. Or look up Dark City Productions they have a great remaster released of it and the soundtrack.
@@ShmupJunkie Much appreciated! It's hard to find that info online. Hey maybe you should do a future video where you list the best soundtracks of the Turbo/PCE, Sega CD and Saturn and what tracks they contain.
You’re welcome. Both this video and my first M2 early primer were well received so I’m trying to make more like it before early releases. Currently working one one for the upcoming Darius releases coming in Feb as well. It’s a busy month!
Great video as usual my friend! From your comparison and review I am hyped to get the reboot and play the X68000 port. I think it is an awesome time to be a gamer!! ✌🏻🔥
It's an amazing time my friend, and for shmups as well so I'm like a kid in a candy store. You'll dig the x68K port it will very much be worth playing, even with the HD remake on the same release. I just hope you don't have to wait a thousand years for it too like some of the other stuff.
Awesome video dude! Recently found your channel and I really enjoy it. Its funny how you move your hands while you talk :P you remind me of Stan in Monkey Island haha. I can say that I am lucky and proud enough to have pre-ordered Cotton Reboot DX Collector's edition Sharp X68000 edition! =) Can't waaaait! Keep up the great work. 🙏
Hahaha, oh man, now I will think of that any time I play Monkey Island again. Thankfully I don't do that much when just talking relaxed, but when I speak in front of people or on camera I get animated. People said I should do informercials. 😅 That's awesome you got that massive DX set.. I missed out on it. But I am just happy to have an easier way to play that Sharp port. I've got a lot more fun videos like this so I hope you enjoy what I've been doing. There aren't a ton I've only been at it for several months.
@@ShmupJunkie hahaha :) Awesome I gladly enjoy your animated style and informecials would suit you indeed! ;P Yes I couldn't miss it, always wanted a X68000 game with their beautiful boxes but its a very expensive collecting realm especially for the computer itself so since I love Cotton this is an excellent substitute or even better a unique version for the "dream machine".. No worries that you missed it, one thing is the collecting part for sure but the other and most important part is the fun factor that you can play and enjoy the game ;) I am sure I will enjoy every single one of your videos!
Thanks buddy! You are always here to enjoy my hard work and support me. The bigger this channel gets the more I appreciate my familiar friends and faces here from IG. 😁
Excellent video! I'm looking forward to playing the X68000 version. I wonder if the JP Edition for Cotton Reboot will already be playable in English. Other Success games, such as the two Umihara Kawase titles for the Switch had JP Versions with English language options.
I sure hope so, I guess it just depends on BEEP and how they have it ported. It would certainly be nice to get some English translations in the game, for both versions, even if the Sharp version didn't. It already exists on the PC Engine anyway in English so it would be pretty easy you'd think. We will know soon enough I guess and I won't miss mentioning it either way.
I am not surprised. There was a few times where I thought it may be easier if I just had the real thing haha. It seems some games are easier to get working than others.
Just pre-ordered this from Strickley Limited thanks to you. I also came across this video and channel by searching for this game. I have now subscribed as you make your videos not only entertaining but also extremely informative so thank you. I also then proceeded to watch your top 5 Xbox 360 Shooters. Have you by any chance reviewed the other Cotton games?
That’s awesome to hear. Glad you’re digging my content and you ordered this one too. I’ll do a full review of it when it’s out. I haven’t done the other Cotton games yet as it’s only been several months since I started the channel. But I definitely did quite a few of the Top 5 hardest series for a few different systems already, including the Saturn, and am finishing one for the PS1 now. You can bet I’ll get to the other Cotton games too and I’m actually hoping this one does well, so maybe we get a collection later with the other rare games in the series. Thx for the feedback by the way it does mean a lot. Especially since I’m new to this.
Oh yeah? That's sweet. I think I did get the box set, but just on Amazon, not the crazy DX set from Strictly Limited. I'm sure it will be sweet. Just hopefully it doesn't take forever to deliver so you don't have to wait too long to play it along with the rest of us.
Now this game, I've been wanting to see a re-release of for quite some time now. I never played any Cotton game ever, and ever since I got into shooters, the Cotton series was one of the must play games on my list. I'll do my best to secure a pre-order on Cotton Reboot ASAP. It looks great. Personally I would love to see the third person rail shooter, Panorama Cotton get a modern facelift as well, preferably in hand drawn 2D sprites. PS: That's a lotta sugar there, my dude! Hahahahaha!
Panorama is a killer game especially that it was done on Mega Drive. I don't own it but have played it a couple times. A future collection with that along with Cotton 2/Boomerang would be a great future release. The Sharp port of the original is a great way to play it for the first time, so if you do end up getting it, let me know what you think in the end. Far as the sweets, funny enough I'm not into candy like that. I'll have to keep it for next Halloween to give away as I have no idea what else I'd do with it. Sure not gonna eat all that junk lol
I totally forgot about The Cotton HD remake coming out. I was too busy focusing on the steam release of Puyo Puyo X Tetris 2. I am glad that this game is coming to PC as well. Sega been doing good lately, hopefully a new/HD remake Thunder Force will come.
Don’t hold your breath on Thunderforce I’ve not heard any news, but at least it’s a beautiful game as is. Sega has definitely been doing real good though I agree. And working with M2 as usual which is very exciting. Aside from this cotton game, G Darius is getting an HD remake coming Feb too. I’m working on a video for that as well.
Awesome overview of the series! Good to see it's getting some love but I gotta say I prefer the old school look to the new style! Think I'll pick this up mainly for the X68000 port, but I'll definitely give the main game a good try as well!
You're not alone, I love the way the Sharp version looks and am looking forward to having it playable on the Switch. It's a good dev doing the HD remake so I am optimistic it will turn out well too. I think the trailer footage is kind of compressed which doesn't help the look. Seeing a better recording when I can get my hands on it will help.
Awesome stuff man. I'm confused though. I've ordered Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute, and Cotton Reboot!, but now I'm also seeing Cotton Rock 'n' Roll, on PlayAsia. Is this coming to the US as well? It's getting hard to keep track of all of these reboots, and releases!
Yeah Rock n Roll is a completely different and brand new game. Not a reboot of anything. So it's coming as a separate release as well. BEEP has been going all out with the Cotton games since the Reboot. I don't know if it'll be US or not but it'll definitely be on PlayAsia and similar.
I am impresses with the Sharp X68000, but considering its past and current price I would expect improvements. However, when you look at the PC Engine's version, which was originally created to compete with the NES? Inconceivable!
I will play that pc engine version forever too if anything for the incredible music. But yes it’s an awesome port overall and still my favorite along with the Sharp version now. The PCE was 💥🔥
Yes I didn't go in depth with those as they are later sequels, not the original game here. Both Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang on the Saturn are good games, also both expensive. They are actually the same game, but also very different in terms of gameplay. There are some good youtube videos out there already that talk about the differences. But I do hope a future collection comes out with them as the later Cotton games are also cool and worth playing, including a very cool and unique one for Mega Drive.
Excited to try this on the ps4. Didn't want to shell out the money for Boomerang on the Saturn so I've been reluctant to try any of the other ones. The remake looks great. Thanks for the content
Yeah many of the Cotton games have gotten crazy expensive. I think a follow up collection with a bunch of the other Cotton games on one disc would be really sweet. They don't all need an HD remake, just having them all to play would be nice. I myself only have a couple as well, and not Boomerang.
I'm pretty eager for this one. Like you have mentioned, the X68000 emulation is very temperamental at times, and it's hard to enjoy the game to its fullest. Having that version included in the reboot is a sweet, sweet extra that will sell more copies for sure. I hope I can play this one decently now. I've always sucked at it. Never quite got used to the bullet speed and gem picking flow effectively. And, great video, as usual.
The gem pickups in this series have always annoyed me, as they seem to get in the way a lot of the time. You want to shoot enemies, but you are hitting gems in your way changing colors. I'll bitch about that when I review the actual game more in depth haha. But I agree completely, as cool as I am sure the remake may end up being, I'm pretty excited for the Sharp port to be on there. If it's well done that alone is worth the purchase for me, so I'm looking forward to it.
It's very different from Deathsmiles in gameplay, this was long before bullet hell existed, but the theme and aesthetic does have some similarities. I hope you enjoy it when it comes out. The new HD remake definitely looks closer to a more modern shmup.
Wonder if I'm alone with this one, but I really like how it looks on the PC Engine and would prefer that style over the PlayStation one. Might be the colors, but it just looks more engaging. Anyway, great video as always, Junkie. Hope it will really come out for the PC.
Yes it's got as brighter color palette. It's missing some parallax and other effects but it definitely pops. Aside from the Sharp version which is very pretty, I'm a fan of the PCE port too. The new Reboot is supposedly coming out on Steam as well so you are all set, assuming that hasn't changed.
Recently played all ports of this game, I found that PC Engine port has better animation/frame than AC port or X68K port, check the bosses of each stage, especially their head and hands, you will found out. Very amazing port at that time.
Oh yeah? That I didn’t notice. I’ve always loved the pc engine port most for the awesome soundtrack on top of it being a good port so that’s cool to know. I’ll pay a bit more attention to that when I play it next.
Is there any word on weather Europe will get a digital release at around the time it launches? Really looking forward to picking Reboot up, I just hope I don't have to jump through too many hoops to get it... Great video btw, as someone who has never played Cotton it was very informative!
I actually have no clue if there is a digital download at all yet or not, so there is no word really. We can only assume. I do know it's also announced for Steam, so it would be silly not to be in the eshop. On a related note though, at least with Switch, it's super easy and well worth creating a Japan eshop account. There are so many cool releases that only come out there and never make it West, that it's a no brainer. It took me 5-10 minutes to do and now I can shop the Japan shop just as easy as the regular one.
@@ShmupJunkie Ah, guess I better wait and see then, thanks! I already made a Japanese account for the Aleste collection, so worst case scenario I'll just use that.
Oh man I loved Cotton but I always sucked at playing the PC-Engine version... Yeah the X68000 was a computer I lusted over when I was living in Japan. But as a fellow PC-Engine collector you understand that it's even more harder to get and more rarer and even exponentially more expensive than collecting for the PC-Engine. I even saw the Twin X-1 which had a PC-Engine and the precursor to the X68000 (X-1 was the final series that was replaced by the x68000 )
I didn't even know what an X68K was until I got onto IG and met others who had one. We definitely didn't have something that cool here in the states at the time, only cheesy Tandy computers haha. I would loved to own one, or the Twin, it was never even in magazines here. But I realize I probably wouldn't be able to use it well anyway since all the OS and menus would be in japanese.
I've tried a few of the Cotton games via emulation and while I haven't beaten any of them yet, I quite like what I've played. I hope that Cotton Reboot is good because if it is I plan on getting it. Also I always love it when remakes include the original game and I wish that was more common. I hope the X68000 emulation is good. With the steam version I think it would be cool if they could make it where if you have a light up keyboard it would light up in time to the music.
That would be pretty cool if they did the keyboard thing for steam, I just wonder how many people out there even have a keyboard with individual rgb lights anymore. They all just glow from inside. I have a good feeling the x68K emulation will be good, but you know me. I’m gonna do a lag test haha
Cool video. I'm pretty excited for this one. Only played a handful of the cotton games, snes version and a few i downloaded off the japanese psn store on the ps3. To be honest I hated using the Dpad on the playsation versions.
The PS consoles never did have the best Dpad I agree with that. I'm glad you found the video useful as I think very few people have ever really seen or know the Sharp version, and it's cool to see. That's what excites me most on the new release, to have that easy to play, regardless of how the HD remake comes out.
First, let me apologize for how many ads you must've been forced to watch during those 5 viewings. Second, you'll have an all new Cotton video to watch this weekend when the review comes out (along with more ads to watch along with it). Third, there will be more shenanigans.
@@MC-hammered Sweeet! Best of both worlds. I think I make a little extra from premium viewers too so says the metrics. Win win but mainly I’m glad you’re enjoying them.
I order from Play Asia all the time and they are actually quite fast. I've never had anything take a long time or delay. Amazon Japan is honestly good too. My M2 Aleste collection came instantly from them. I also think this collection is cheap there for $41 last I checked.
That's a good question and I think depends on what you want. Of course Switch lets you go portable. Switch games also tend to command higher prices later for whatever reason. But in terms of gameplay, most of the time, the PS4 ports have less input delay. Not guaranteed but as more of a trend overall. I got the Switch version, but I think they will be near identical so really pick which console you use most.
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks for the advice dude. I’d have to say that the switch is my go to system. I’m going to go with that and go the Amazon route. I’d love to support Strictly limited but I’ve found their turn around times to be incredibly slow.
Cotton, to me, looks like an early version of Touhou before Touhou was a thing. Appli from Cotton 2/Boomerang even bears some resemblance to Marisa Kirisame. I wouldn't be surprised if ZUN was somewhat inspired by it
I never saw the similarity in the gameplay, but I also didn't know Touhou nearly as well until the last few years. I'm still not super familiar with the characters, I just love how great it is as a bullet hell trainer for all skill levels, along with the exceptional music. I'm featuring it in an upcoming video next Sunday actually for learning to play.
Lol yeah I have been doing these funny skits on and off for a while now with other videos, kind of a trolling alter ego I created. For some videos it works to do something funny, and I have a good time being silly with it.
That was a CD soundtrack for Cotton and yeah, it's pretty legendary. One of the best game soundtracks of all time really. Likely why the pc engine version is pretty desirable.
Have you had a chance to play the Sega Mini Astro city version of Cotton ? I heard that the Astro mini does not have any difficulty settings and the difficulty for all game is "easy". What say to you?
Reaaaaally? Now that I didn’t know! As I haven’t played it on my Astro City yet. But now that you mentioned it I’m going to try. And will likely mention it when I do the review video for this. Thx for the heads up as I hadn’t heard that at all. I wonder if it will be like the ps1 port.
@@ShmupJunkie Or please answer right here. I am debating on whether to import it or not but I like my games hard as nail and your opinion will be very much appreciated
Looking forward to your review! I have been playing it and am not sure exactly what to do for the “Special Strong Enemies Appeared!” trophy. Do you or does anyone out there know how to achieve this? Thanks for any input!
I don’t yet no, as I’m playing it on Switch so no trophies for me unfortunately. On the bright side the performance on the switch port is smoking, less than 3 frames of delay! So the PS4 has to be as good or better.
Upon searching every game that have many similarity with Cotton, its easy to say that I wanted to get more shmups similar to it. I'll probably start with Trouble Witches and Deathsmiles. You know any other shmup similar to this?
Yes. Also look at magical chase on pc engine. It’s much more similar to this than the two you mentioned, very similar. More cute but still very alike. Just don’t try to buy it as it’s crazy expensive, but it’s very easy to emulate or play on an everdrive. It also has very good and fun chip tune music. Btw this new Cotton reboot is being made by the same developer as Trouble Witches. So if you like that game it bodes well for this one.
@@ShmupJunkie The hell with those overpriced physical copy?!! You were right about the price. Speaking of Trouble Witches, I found out that Magical Chase and Trouble Witches both have item shop.
Amazing video! Thank you for this. I really hope the PC version surfaces one day. It not, I'll be getting it digital on Switch during a sale. Only because I don't have much money to spend. I'm gonna emulate the PS1 version. It's got an English patch!
Seems like it was abandoned. Maybe the port just wasn’t working out for it or was too much work. The pS1 port is solid aside from the normal mode being extra easy for some reason. You could emulate the pc engine game very easily too for the amazing music. I play it for that alone
@@ShmupJunkie I certainly will emulate that one as well as the Neo Geo Pocket Color one! I've got the RG 351P so these will be fun to play on that. And my PC as well. Yeah that music you showcased from PC Engine was absolutely killer. 🎃🎃🎃
Great vid again, i thought i already did it in the past, but subbed now! Very much deserved. On the game itself, i tried it (pce) but i found it less intuitive then most other shooters i played (you caused me to try aleste, ps4 collection on the way now :S ;) ) and on my wii i bought soldier blade ages ago.....these seems more n00b friendly than cotton? Admittedly i hopped in with the game gear versions! I guess in general shmups generally are not the most complex of games (wel at least the older ones) but maybe you could explain a bit about the gems? Anyways i will def retry, nice incentive to work on properly setting up that sharp 68k core for the mister! (or i guess i am ps1 material! )
Thank you. And you are right Cotton is not an intuitive shmup, although not difficult once you know the buttons. It has a lot of different uses for attacks. The fire button, if held down, fires the magic. The bomb button, if held down, also shoots out your fairies when released to attack. So that is four attacks there with only two buttons. The gems are actually simple. If red, it gives you fire magic. If blue, you get the lightning. And you can change the gem color by shooting them to the color you want. The rest are just for experience to level up your shot power. And there are separate power ups for bomb power. AND the containers you shoot throughout the stage give you bonuses, like extra fairies among other things. So yeah, when you add it all up, there is a lot going on. It was never a simple shmup to begin with. But once you know how it works after playing a bit it's no big deal. Oh yes, almost forgot, you can also use your magic defensively, as a shield, instead of shooting it off. Gosh you ain't kidding. 😂
I found out that I can play older shmups in a browser. But this game seems to have something I always wanted in a shmup like life bar and a unique power ups.
This shmup is very unique, if complex actually. A lot of different power ups, and magic types, and experience points. It takes some time to figure out but there is more depth to it than you would think.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 they definitely kick your butt like a shmup though lol. The level system is very basic. You just collect gems and when you die you lose a certain percent of your experience
Don't think there is any relation besides them both being witches. And they both came out in 91 so around the same time, not enough time for one to copy another really. Cotton is certainly more villainous and candy starved
Interesting, I will have to look into that and maybe include something about it when I do the review. I had lots of issues until I got the right rom files, that was the worst of it. But each game seems to be unique, and some are much harder to get working than others.
I loved your comparison and vídeo and to be honest I didnt know the X68000 was such a nice version. However I tried to run it under Retroarch (PX68k core) and right after the EA logo screen pops up I get a message in japanese saying something about 4Mb RAM. How did you get to emulate this version? Thanks!
Emulating 68k is quite annoying. You aren’t doing anything wrong you just don’t have a good rom that will easily load and may require lots of extra work. Try looking for another rom version. I had to go through 3 different ones before it worked. Also be patient as it takes 30sec to a minute to load up and start once that logo appears. But that’s another reason I’m looking forward to this collection. Emulating it isn’t as straight forward as it seems. But once you find one that works it should be good.
@@ShmupJunkie you were right. I just had to wait about 30s after the RAM message in japanese popped out, and then the game loaded perfectly. Man! These graphics are glorious. You made my day. Thanks again!!
Man the PCE had so many awesome OSTs it's hard to decide. And many of them are all work by T's music.I always though it sounded a lot like Ys even though those were done by Falcom and their JDK band.
@@ShmupJunkie I know that Ys gets a whole lot of praise, but there is just something completely unique about this soundtrack for me. I absolutely suck at the game, but I love dying over and over to the sound of this masterpiece. By the way, is there anywhere you can get a proper overview of works by T's Music?
@@jonatana.4540 There isn’t and that’s unfortunate. Their website isn’t very helpful and they are very different now. They had various people working there so it’s hard to tell who did what. I always wanted to do a video on them and their work but I haven’t been able to piece enough info together yet for something very comprehensive.
Does this game have the same issue with latency, as the Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute? I wish I could have canceled that one before PlayAsia shipped it out. I didn't learn about that lag until a day after it had shipped. :( Will you be doing any testing on the latency on that one? I'm wondering how accurate that 11 frames of lag is.
Nope quite the opposite. I did a full review of Reboot in a follow up video to this and if you check it out, you’ll see it’s only 3 frames! Different developer and great port. Only the new Tribute collection has this problem so far. All 3 games on it. I tested it at 10+ also. They did say they were looking into it but that’s all we got so far.
Yeah you recognized it well, it's a great set. Mine is a 32" but same model I believe. I've got the review video coming this weekend so you've got that to look forward to. 😬
@@ShmupJunkie I think I have it in a 34 as well 😁 But the smaller 27 looks sharper just because it's a smaller screen Definitely looking forward to the video 👍 Cotton is probably my most favorite cute em up 😁
Almost perfect video. New Metallica footage instead of classic Metallica and using James (rhythm guitar) instead of Kirk was unforgivable XD. Super good video, man. I`m getting the PS4 version.
😂 Well I searched youtube high and low for a perfect clip that worked with that section and it was the best I could find. I actually looked for some master of puppets first as I love their old stuff, maybe a good solo clip, but couldn't find some good footage with guitar close ups. I actually still have a live concert DVD from that tour somewhere I gotta give that a listen again. That may be my favorite album of theirs.
Well, if emulating it doesn't pan out, know you'll be able to play the Sharp version easy in February if you grab one. Emulating the PC Engine version though is a piece of cake on Retroarch and it's a nice version to play with that music. The Arcade is easy to emulate too it can just be pretty brutal. Get that save state button ready for practice haha
Awesome review , I have all the Cotton games for the Saturn and being honest It's a series I still can't get into it, that being said I'll still be ordering my copy as the HD version looks incredible ( thinking Deathsmiles) The Sharp X68000 has some amazing games in it's library and well worth looking into for the hardcore.
Thanks! I think I really enjoy the original Cotton on PCE for the nostalgia and music, but only have Cotton 2 on the Saturn as my other one. They have gotten really pricey. I am told the new remake is being made by the same developer of Trouble Witches, so we can expect something similar there. Next on my list to try on Sharp x68K is Undeadline! I dig that game on MD and heard the Sharp port is way better.
@@ShmupJunkie Undeadline on the MD is a solid game all day long , if the x68k is better I wouldn't mind seeing a review of that as there doesn't seem to be many online
Is this game worth picking up for someone who has never played any game in the series before? My shmup collection consists of 25 games and before I decided to place a cap on it for good I'm looking to cop 1 or 2 more and was curious if this is as great of a game as Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Ketsui, Gradius V, R-Type Delta, etc.
As much as I dig Cotton and enjoy it, it’s not on the same level as the games you mentioned in my opinion. I don’t know what other games you are considering, but If you are capping your collection with just one or two more, there are certainly others to look at first.
My fav thing about the pce port is the music it’s just incredible. I just received my physical copy yesterday so will finally be digging into this new version soon!
You're lucky you got one! I was looking at that cool DX set but man it was pricey, and I missed out before they were sold out. But I do have the regular box set on order too. Glad you grabbed yours in time and hope it doesn't take long to get upon release.
Hey thanks! I was hoping you caught the shout out to the mashup at the end of the pc engine section 😁. I missed out on the initial runs and am patiently awaiting the upcoming batch.
I wish I knew. Strictly Limited can take a very long time and you never know when it will be out. I would guess sometimes this year but even that isn’t a guarantee. It takes a while for these small outfits to make it happen.
Really appreciate the timely retrospective and looking forward to the reboot review! Also the thumbnail is top tier 🙂. Thanks Junkie!
@Korbin Kylo instablaster ;)
This channel is really gonna blow up soon... I can feel it... Such amazing content!
It's blowing up already! At least for a Shmup channel I am stoked. This channel growing means Shmups are growing, it's a good time to be a fan. 🤘
I have preordered my reboot already. Love Cotton Boomerang for the Saturn. BTW, great job on the video. Always very informative. Consider me a fan.
I am glad to have stumbled onto this channel and subscribe. Very informative and well done content!
Thanks! And welcome. I have some really fun and useful series I’ve made so I hope you find a lot more that sparks your interest. Currently working on a huge every mega drive shooter reviewed video with 70+ games that should be ready in a couple weeks.
Cotton is the very first game that I've ever preorder, I even made an amazon account to get it. I can't wait for it to get here TTwTT
(Still looks like a blast, but I'll definitely be playing the old version first.)
Oh and yeah, hope it comes with an instructions booklet. Occasionally a standard Switch release (yes, I got the 40 dollar version) has a great little fully illustrated manual, like Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin.
OK that was long, keep up the good work, recently subbed, but liking what I'm seeing so far!
Thanks for this video. I went to that website with all the soundtracks. Great stuff there, messages them for quite a few things. Appreciated!
Just ordered the COTTON reboot after watching this and your reboot review. I'm pretty hyped right now!
Hope you enjoy it! They just added two more DLC characters to it recently too.
Your videos never fail to make me head over to seller sites, credit card in hand.
@@ShmupJunkie There's a free PC port of CRS68k, so if you have Win10 and the right compatibility it runs fine.
Did I hear 3 and 5 minute time attack modes? After the RagingBlasters caravan I've got a soft spot for them now!
According to UBO it's the same devs as Trouble Witches. He had high praise for the scoring mechanics in that game so it bodes well for the time attack modes here.
Preordered my regular edition for switch from strictly limited! Can't wait for it!
How could I miss that ? A reboot in the works and I didn't know about. Thanks for this Video, this looks amazing !
Cheers
Uh, satisfying broom-smack sound! :D
Ha! My favorite sound effect to use when dealing with Timmy I can't help myself.
Excellent job, thanks for the comparisons. I hope you get to cover Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang together in a future video.
I've gotten a few requests so I most certainly will plan to. It would be cool if this collection does well and they do a future release with those two games and Boomerang at some point in a collection.
Bought the Switch version recently and really like it (not had chance play it much yet tho), so I thought I'd watch your video again 👍
Man, I need a PC Engine after watching this video!
Definitely getting the Cotton Reboot at least!
That version is nice right! I'm a hype machine for PC Engine lol. That mini hack is taking way too long.
i generally don't spend much money on the hobby (or at least in big splashes) but i decided to treat myself and import a pc engine, guessing 2-3 years ago AND get a ssd3 from Terraonion, my wallet bled, but the fun you get in return is amazing especially if u like shmups! If you like retor gaming in general a mister may be the next best thing, as much as i love my pce, if i had gotten my mister earlieri think i would have not bought it (from a gaming only perspective, i love seeing the pce in my little gaming desk ofcourse!)
Try a Mister FPGA, it will play the pc engine version perfectly, and there is a X68000 core in development
Thank you so much. It was so confusing seeing 6 different cotton titles all ranging from $20-40.
An absolute thing of beauty, lol. Ya did well with this. The Sharp version is a thing o' the gods
Isn't it! I always hear how killer Sharp ports of some of the games are... Undeadline being another one. So when I finally played it this week I loved it. Now I just wish I could insert the PCE music tracks into it lol
@@ShmupJunkie that'd be a dream come true. And if the reboot has an option for said soundtrack, it would be fucking appreciated

YES!!! It worked perfectly. 💪😎👍
Wonder if shmuparch has a core?
@@TheElectricUnderground There is PX68k, which it seems to emulate it well enough, it can be a pain to get the bios or the games working sometimes tho.
There is an unfinished mister core for this system. Really hope it gets done at some point.
Loved this video mate, had to subscribe, love this series
Hey! Glad you loved it enough to sub. I've made quite a bit more just like it with a mix of humor and nostalgia while making sure there was lots of in-depth tech detail to go along with it. If you liked this one, there's quite a few more you may too.
@@ShmupJunkie yeah i got some catching up to do ha ha
Amazing video, all of this info is exactly what makes great content, thanks for showing this.
Masterful! 👏And it's nice to see you too, 😉 lots of information, a perfect video editing in short another excellent video dude! 👍

X68000s are quite simple to use. Emulators actually make things more complicated for beginners.
I am not surprised. There was a few times where I thought it may be easier if I just had the real thing haha. It seems some games are easier to get working than others.
great video! it does look like deathsmiles was inspired by this one. Im sold! will be picking up the retail version when its out.
Very much so, and I am a fan of Deathsmiles too. I'm a sucker for fantasy stuff.
great overview! keep up the awesome work!
Thanks. I hope to have my hands on it soon for a review of the final package. And looking forward to it.
Cant wait this is gonna be an awesome port. I bought the x68000 collectors edition.
Oh yeah? That's sweet. I think I did get the box set, but just on Amazon, not the crazy DX set from Strictly Limited. I'm sure it will be sweet. Just hopefully it doesn't take forever to deliver so you don't have to wait too long to play it along with the rest of us.
X68k Cotton even has wide screen mode, but you do it manually by lowering your vertical screen size. Simple and effective for monitors of its day.
If I ever get the opportunity to own a real one of them, I wouldn't hesitate. They are such a cool machine.
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks for the info. Nice job with the videos too!
The PCE was 💥🔥
Great video. You mention the Saturn version in the beginning but don't go into detail about that one. How's that one?
Another fantastic video. Thanks, you’re the best!
You're welcome! And I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I've never played the Cotton series but I love death smiles, pre-order this game on PS4 and switch can't wait to try it out.
Panorama Cotton VR or bust! I need Tea Time in Vr yall cmon!
Not a bad idea! It's already 3D it would translate pretty well I think. I'm in. 👍
My Strictly Limited Switch copy just shipped!! Yay, I'll be able to play it before the end of the year!!
Finally! I know they take forever so I'm glad it's on the way for you.
I'm totally looking foward to the Reboot on PS4! To me that version gives me Deathsmiles vibes. My lady preordered the collectors edition.
After deathsmiles got the cotton vibe lol
That's awesome you have a lady worth keeping if she is hooking you up with gifts like that!
I think I’ve watched this video at least 5 times, cracks me up!
First, let me apologize for how many ads you must've been forced to watch during those 5 viewings. Second, you'll have an all new Cotton video to watch this weekend when the review comes out (along with more ads to watch along with it). Third, there will be more shenanigans.

Good video. Not sure where to purchase physically here in the states. Play Asia appears to be the cheapest option but worried on the shipping time.
I order from Play Asia all the time and they are actually quite fast. I've never had anything take a long time or delay. Amazon Japan is honestly good too. My M2 Aleste collection came instantly from them. I also think this collection is cheap there for $41 last I checked.
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks I'll go through them. I saw Aleste but it's $75 for just the game! Still might do it though... Pass me the crack pipe
An exceptional comparison video. Thanks for the insight dude. My question to you is this: For the reboot, PS4 or Switch version? And why?
@@Supa.Nintendope can’t fault you there I’ve had that issue too. If you want it fast amazon is the way to go at the moment.
Haha what a strange, wierd, but awesome start to a very informative video. Just keep up this content i cant wait to see what you come up with next
Lol yeah I have been doing these funny skits on and off for a while now with other videos, kind of a trolling alter ego I created. For some videos it works to do something funny, and I have a good time being silly with it.
The music on the pc engine is phenomenal its kinda like some power metal with a lot of synth
Awesome video and I’m really looking forward to play this game. The tag line for this game should be “100% cotton”
That's funny since the SNES sequel is called Cotton 100% 😂
@@ShmupJunkie He he, whoops 😅
Happy new.
A video with a list of great shmup in 640x480p 31k will be great,I just know naomi system shmup.
I play many times both arcade and PSOne (emulator only) are the first Cute em All. For the 30 years of this entertaining game
I think you would really like the Sharp 68K Cotton too then, it's a very good enhancement over the arcade.
@@ShmupJunkie Thanks, will def try the game again with this info, and at least i feel a little bit better knowing it is a relatively complex game :D

i will stay tuned for that one mate :o)
I found out that I can play older shmups in a browser. But this game seems to have something I always wanted in a shmup like life bar and a unique power ups.
This shmup is very unique, if complex actually. A lot of different power ups, and magic types, and experience points. It takes some time to figure out but there is more depth to it than you would think.
@@ShmupJunkie The more I see Cotton and Trouble Witches, the less I think of them as a shmups. I feel like they can easily transition into rpg.
@@soratheorangejuicemascot5809 they definitely kick your butt like a shmup though lol. The level system is very basic. You just collect gems and when you die you lose a certain percent of your experience
@@ShmupJunkie I'll gonna check if that game plays fine in browser to see what I should expect.
always wondered about Magical Chase vs Cotton, if there's some back story there.
Don't think there is any relation besides them both being witches. And they both came out in 91 so around the same time, not enough time for one to copy another really. Cotton is certainly more villainous and candy starved
Don't believe so different entity & staff,Yoshiyasu matsushita the designer went onto dev twinkle star sprites
X68000 Cotton is easily emulated on Raspberry Pi with the RetroPie project. Archive.org has all the rom files (just need to find the ones that work).
@@PopperLau Sweet! Glad you had it right. Enjoy it’s a great port!
The PC Engine soundtrack is absolutely godlike. It is in my all-time top 3 of soundtracks.
@@ShmupJunkie Awesome, Thanks for the reply. I've been loving the videos BTW. Excellent work!
Soo hyped for the reboot!
At the end of the video you like like you have a Sony 27FS120
My favorite CRT TV 😁
Yeah you recognized it well, it's a great set. Mine is a 32" but same model I believe. I've got the review video coming this weekend so you've got that to look forward to. 😬
@@ShmupJunkie I think I have it in a 34 as well 😁
But the smaller 27 looks sharper just because it's a smaller screen
Definitely looking forward to the video 👍
Cotton is probably my most favorite cute em up 😁
Almost perfect video.
Oh man. I wanted to play Cotton for a while now, but now I HAVE TO PLAY IT.
It'd be cool if they made the Dualshock 4 controller flash to the music like the Sharp keyboard.
Haha now that’s a funny idea. I’d be on board with that DLC. Poor Switch don’t think the Joycon or Pro has anything that could do that.
best experience so far with the PCE version... the sound and the wackyness makes it the best version for me.
My fav thing about the pce port is the music it’s just incredible. I just received my physical copy yesterday so will finally be digging into this new version soon!
Preordered my copy from strictly limited. Im hyped for the teacup. Two down!
You're lucky you got one! I was looking at that cool DX set but man it was pricey, and I missed out before they were sold out. But I do have the regular box set on order too. Glad you grabbed yours in time and hope it doesn't take long to get upon release.
I missed the x68000 reboot it sold out pretty fast but my friend did get it.
The base game isn’t sold out I’m pretty sure, just the limited editions
@@ShmupJunkie i was talking about the x68000 beep version
Nice video mate.
The Haze Approves.
Hey thanks! I was hoping you caught the shout out to the mashup at the end of the pc engine section 😁. I missed out on the initial runs and am patiently awaiting the upcoming batch.
i have ordered this with Strictly games back in November Last year just love to know when its going to be released in Europe?
I wish I knew. Strictly Limited can take a very long time and you never know when it will be out. I would guess sometimes this year but even that isn’t a guarantee. It takes a while for these small outfits to make it happen.
