The Exu sare a group of spirits, and any kind of ancestors will attach to one with time (the upper spirits like Exu maioral are apart since they re present pure energy).
So your ancestors can attach to a group of Exu and pomba Gira and this lineage will be connected with you throughout your live. You in return will attach to a group of spirits once you died.
You doesn't need to have roots in Brazil to work with the Exus, since Brazilian traditions are heavenly influenced by European and African magic and we are all connected by this bound.
In traditions from other countries, the Exus have other names and representations but the principle stays the same.
Work with them if you feel called by them.
It is all about ancestors work in the end and intuition is key here.

It is a misogynistic 'religion', but as you apparently have no self respect as a woman you should be okay with it.

@Obscurum you're entitled to have your opinion, but to come on here and state that someone who you don't know has no self-respect as a woman is rude and inappropriate. I'm not here for that. There's always someone with big opinions who seem to have little to no actual engagement or experience in the community.

Frisvold has a tendency to say Exu Rei is Michael and in his most recent book seven crossroads of night he claims the Maioral is Michael so beware he makes things up. I prefer Quimbanda cult of the red and black flame. That is my go to book I also recommend the true Grimoire by Jake Stratton Kent as he compares it with Quimbanda.

Danilo Coppini's book is excellent, but I don't think it's in print anymore (probably because of the controversy surrounding Martinet Press)... So I'm glad I bought a copy when I did.
Jake's book is also fantastic, but it's not really a book about Quimbanda, and Frisvold elaborates on the same Solomonic correspondences in his book on Exu.

Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold has written the most important books on Quimbanda, Palo Mayombe, Obeah, and Ifa.
For me, a westerner, these resources are indispensable and have served as veritable roadmaps to my adventures!

Lmao your lost if you think that. The garden of blood and bones is trash and definitely not a good representation of actual Mayombe.

It’s interesting that he seems to suggest possession by Esu doesn’t happen in Africa. Esu comes from the Yoruba tradition where they also practice spirit possession.

Quimbanda is the cult of the powerful dead, it is the ancient spirits that lived, it is the natives of the tribes of Brazil, who in no way accepted Portuguese colonization and exploration nor Christianity, in addition to the spirits of black sorcerers who refused to be slaves were domesticated as Christians and fled from their masters into the forest mixing with the natives, those who were captured were tortured and killed, women were prostitutes, raped, abused, condemned to burning at the stake accused of witchcraft, also like Serphardic Jews condemned to leave Portugal and condemned to live in Brazil for being Jews and not having converted to Christianity, also mixes with the popular Catholicism practiced by Portugal and Spain in the 16th, 17th, 18th centuries, bringing great popularity to European figures of the time until the present day, such as Queen Maria de Padilha, lover of Pedro I of Castile, who in Quimbanda is the Pombogira Maria Padilha, the main female entity not only in the cult of Quimbanda, but also in other Brazilian cults, Argentine, Uruguayan and Paraguayans. Finally, the name Exu in quimbanda does not refer to the Orixá, the name comes from the demonization of the Orixá by European colonizers who translated Exu as the Devil. Mr. Exus and Mrs. Pombogiras da Quimbanda are proud to be known as the Brazilian devils, as they are the resistance against everything.

Yes in Nigeria and about ORIXAS. But Quimbanda comes from Central Africa where Exu sare a group of spirits, and any kind of ancestors will attach to one with time (the upper spirits like Exu maioral are apart since they re present pure energy).
So your ancestors can attach to a group of Exu and pomba Gira and this lineage will be connected with you throughout your live. You in return will attach to a group of spirits once you died.
