All in all both sides sounded pretty normal to me at least.

      Anywhere else in the world giving two aircraft clearance for the same runway would not be regarded as a minor mistake. The 'Cleared' in cleared to land/takeoff refers to the runway being cleared of all other aircraft. An aircraft that is cleared to land should never see an obstacle on the runway, even temporarily, after it has been cleared. This should be regarded as an incident with a decent slab of paperwork around reporting, not normal operations.
      The controller came across as professional and deliberate, but that does not change the fact that controller SOP in the US has become dangerous, and pilots are getting concerned about it. Controllers are regularly putting aircraft into conflict and relying entirely on their communications equipment to avoid collisions. This procedure has a single human point of failure, and multiple equipment points of failure, on equipment not rated for this level of safety.

And, always, when you know another a/c's on pretty short final and you're given a tight clearance, you really don't have to accept the clearance when a go-around for the other a/c is clearly foreseeable..

    Controllers (Baltimore, included...) used to ask us if we could accept an immediate takeoff clearance and be rolling within three seconds if given a taxi-into-position (line up and wait) instruction. If so accepted, we would acquiesce and taxi into position, get the engines spooled up and be ready to release the brakes as the traffic downfield cleared the runway and the takeoff order was still being verbalized by the tower controller. As the acknowledgment response by one of us in the cockpit was still being verbalized over the radio to the tower, the controller could hear in the background that our engines were already at takeoff power, and he could see through his binoculars that we were already rolling as he listened to our reply. There were no wasted seconds, and, I imagine, the controllers breathed a little easier just knowing that what they feared the most was NOT going to happen... I haven't heard a controller ask this of any pilot in a while, and I haven't observed such fleet-footedness from any pilot in several years. Has anyone of you out there participated in such a manner recently? This used to be common practice; it was fun to do, and you had to be "on your toes."

      She said traffic was on 5 mile final. These pilots should have not farted around. More than likey, they weren't completely ready, and said nothing. Normally, I'm on the pilot's side, but you can't burn up a minute when the other plane is going 3 miles a minute. It's first grade math 🤷‍♂️

    I didn't hear the pilot actually ask, "what was the reason for go around". They said "inquiring minds want to know", which is a pretty vague statement. The controller took that as wanting to know directions, and so she told them to turn left to 280 (or 200, I don't recall now). I think the controller was a little confused as to what was going on. The pilot was never really clear with his question or intent. Number one rule of radio communication is to be clear and concise. The statement "Inquiring minds want to know" is neither of those. The controller may, or may not have goofed. I don't know the regulations enough to say so, but I'm sure there are plenty of experts who do know. The point is she recognized far before it was an emergency and she took steps to maintain safety for everyone involved. I don't know about you, but I would think that's a controllers #1 job? Making sure aircraft don't fly into each seems like a very safety oriented endeavor. Like I said, I don't know enough to have an educated opinion, but my personal opinion is the pilot could have been clearer with his request. If he needs to justify the go around and fuel expenditure with his company, okay, but I don't think FAA has any jurisdiction on whether a company has to pay more for fuel or not. That's the price of doing business.

      I wouldn't even say have it out. It sounded like they just wanted to understand it better so they can report back to their superiors. It looks like the Endeavor was slow rolling and she could have said "no delay" to express the urgency of them getting rolling.

    With crossing runways I would have thought clearing one plane to land and another to takeoff was always a recipe to disaster. That the SW flight responded so quickly prevented a big problem.

    • @rubenvillanueva8635
      @rubenvillanueva8635 11 місяців тому

      @michaelhayden, Crossing runway operations are very common, It does require the controller to be totally focused on the traffic. With adequate spacing provided by Approach control, the Tower controller can launch departures with minimum delays.

    Curious to know what the atc standard separation is in this circumstance. Seemed really off that she cleared a crossing takeoff with someone on a 3.5 final. EWR typically doesn't let me cross 4/22 at low altitude (in a heli) with anyone on less than a 7 mile final. Previous airport i flew at for a few years would let me cross with traffic on a 3 mile (and even a GA on short final sometimes).

    Sounded like a simple go around for spacing that was perhaps partially a result of ATC judgment, and partially Endeavor taking a minute to get going. Everything appears to have worked like it should have when this happens, and with humans involved, its definitely going to happen. Everyone here was super professional.

    I'm sure the SW pilots need a reason for the go-around for a report to their company. Probably nothing more than that. Pilots could have probably waited till they were on the ground. Seemed a little abrasive about it, but who knows? Could have been having a bad day. That tower controller is an absolute legend, though. I wish they were all that friendly. There's a couple at my local airport that when I hear their voice in my headset it brightens my day because they're always really nice and put everyone at ease. And a couple more that are a little less personable.

      Technically SWA doesn’t necessarily require them to put a reason for go around, for good reason, as you don’t want them not going around thinking a particular reason will have knock on effects later on. No questions asked go arounds. However, 99% of the time you will still want to put a reason in, especially in these cases where it wasn’t within your control. Not sure why he didn’t just ask at the end when she said she had time what the reason was and she could’ve told him traffic didn’t expedite take off on time, had they rolled sooner it would’ve been fine.
