the worst part about the king's betrayal is how the story talking about noland's legend is SURE to tell the reader how 'wise' and 'brave' the king was, and does not bring up why he was so excited to see the city of gold, because then people would be less on the king's side if it was clear how greedy and selfish he was. Noland likely was just naive about his king and didn't think his country's ruler would be a bad guy. because while he's great in many ways, he sadly did not realise that not every leader is great, wise, kind or selfless.
How Oda can completely halt the progression of intense moments for a flash back and make everything more impactful rather than ruin it is a gift Idk if anyone else has like him.
To this day even with many stories being told for years and 1100+ chapters/episodes, this is one of the most tragic and beautiful stories Oda has written, this arc as a whole is just great especially on a rewatch, but man Noland and Kalgara's story is both beautiful and heartbreaking everytime i see it. Also i freaking LOVE Wyper so much, i just has to say it because my man gets a lot of hate but i love him!
You won't ever know about the reason why shandorian have wings even before going up since it's explained on the manga cover story. If you wanna know here you go.. Shandorian, skypiean, and birka (enel hometown ppl called birka) are all moon people descendant. Yeah once in very long long long time ago, moon is liveable and lived by this three race. Then one day it runs out of resources to live so they go down to earth. While shandorian gets to go as far as to the blue sea(the real winner since land got so much sources you can see with how vast their city have become too before it fell and left with small tribe only), skypiean and birkans only reach sky island and live there.
Yep, that beanstalk was ALREADY THERE. How? Since when? Why? *Nobody knows!* One of the great mysteries of One Piece. Also, congratulations on getting through the Noland-Calgara flashback, the first time in the series we have an extended period of time in which not a single Straw Hat appears. It will not be the last time that happens.

The feats of strength that Noland and Kalgara show is beyond that of our crew and that makes us realize that there is a massive Power Scaling and strength One Piece has yet to reveal and humble us that we are nowhere near these legends even after hundreds of episodes
Noland and Kalgara are meant to parallel Roger and Whitebeard. The feats of strength they displayed clearly show they were the strongest of their generation at the time. Even Noland's execution mirrors Roger's in a way. Noland: "The city of gold exists!" Whitebeard & Roger: "The One Piece is real!" just before they die..
This backstory is one of the most well written backstories in one piece ... , also considering the characters in this backstory are not so related to the mainstream storyline , this is just 👏🏻👏🏻
My only minor gripe with it is I wish the trees/spirits belief was set up a bit earlier so the viewers would have context for the cold shoulder treatment, but as the girls pointed out that would rob us of the perspective of confusion experienced by Noland and his crew. Otherwise 10/10 backstory!
In case anyone is still looking for it, the title of the OST at 16:04 is "Mezase part 1" It also plays during the blooming of the Drum Island cherry tree, and another handful of such awesome moments, just don't read the comments if you aren't caught up!
I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure the name of no lands home kingdom is on his sail, which would mean the ship belongs to the lord. I think Noland needed his kings permission and telling him of the city of gold would be a surefire way to get permission.

So the king was brought along as part of Noland's second voyage because he needed the King's permission and funding for these voyages; hence why the King mentioned getting clearance from Holy Land Mary Geoise (Which is the name of that place you guys saw with the 5 elderly guys who are the World Government's highest authority. This was back during the episode that introduced those other Warlords and who Blackbeard really was.) TL:DR Noland would not have been allowed to set sail if he didn't get the permission and funding from his King. So he was forced to take him along, which is actually pretty historically accurate for how such exploration voyages happened back during our own history's sailing era.
What a great emotional episode. Had me with tears in my eyes. After so far into the ark, I finally know what made Wyper stand up after many deadly strikes.. One Piece never disappoints with backstories.

I don't think y'all will see this but I love your reactions so much!! I've been watching One Piece since I was 11 (now I only read the manga but I originally watched the early One Piece seasons available at the library on DVD! ☺) One Piece has been with me through thick and thin, and it's messages of kindness and friendship and the mystery and amazing characters were always so important to me growing up! I felt like it was obvious how fun and amazing One Piece was, but I remember none of my girl friends wanted to watch it because it was a "boy anime". Growing up it made me feel insecure about liking it and I kept my obsession of One Piece to myself. So many people have started watching it since the live action like you guys and it makes me so happy! I love seeing you guys have such a fun time with One Piece, just like I did when I was a kid! If only we all watched it together as kids, I think y'all and I would have had such a fun time talking about One Piece together ☺ Looking forward to more of your reactions!! Skypeia is one of my favorite arcs, and I'm excited for y'all to get even deeper in the story!!
This moment, "Answer me. What did I just kill?" "A Snake" "NOOOOO!" Honestly one of Oda's best dialogues in the whole series. This part brings me to tears instantly!
The Skypiea arc and these 2 episodes are extremely important to One Piece as a whole. Take notes of what you can, because in the long run, it will all make sense and will be beautiful.
its everywhere in the world, the belief that spirits inhabit trees. we dont have to go far, japanese myths, folklores, and legends have the same concept iirc
The Ancient Greeks had Dryads, or tree nymphs, which were tree spirits and sometimes even considered minor goddesses. It was believed they would live as long as their tree did and I read that Ancient woodsmen would even tell the trees they were going to cut down, their intentions to give the dryad who resided there a chance to leave and find or create a new tree to inhabit.
If I'm not mistaken, the Sumerians had a belief that oak trees were divine trees that guarded the gates of heaven through which the dead entered Heaven, and in this mythology, these trees had a guardian called Humbaba, so the belief that divine trees exist or are close to it is extremely old and occurred in several places, although this "type of mythology" is more common in South and Central America because people have been in constant contact with trees since ancient times.
It has been pointed out before the sheer confidence Oda must have had in this backstory. This story takes place across 8 chapters and more importantly none of the Straw Hats appear even once in the middle 6 chapters. Two months of weekly publication with a month and a half devoted solely to an entirely new cast of characters. That's practically unheard of in shonen writing. The bromance of Noland and Calgara is the stuff of legend!
The fact that people call this arc filler, and this flashback in particular, is so insane. I love the Noland/Calgara story. The explanation of the fire of Shandora and what it represents makes its importance to the arc that much more important. And I think that Cricket based the facade of his house on the picture of the castle from the storybook about Noland. Also, Mariejois isn't a person, but a place. It's basically the capital of all the nations of the World Government.
I think this has been mentioned before, so it's not really a spoiler, but Mariejois is the capitol city of the world government. So basically what the king said would be like if a US senator said "We've finally got permission from Washington to send an expedition" ...or something.
Oda is a truely a god imagine to write a story about Mariegoise and the story about Calgara and Noland in the same line of the story and the part of Mariegoise is not even change until right now, WOW ! Someone who hate onepiece is just never taste a story like this. They just wanna good fight scene
Marie Jois (or Mary Geoise) is actually a place, not a person. Can't say much else about it, you'll find out eventually. Also, the next saga, Water Seven, is where the series gets flipped upside down and takes a more calculated direction.
In One Piece, the following races of people have lived on the moon: Shandia: A race that lived on the moon along with the Birkans and Skypieans. Sky Island Residents: A race of winged humanoids that originated on the moon but later came to Earth after the moon's resources ran out. They are similar to humans, but have small wings on their backs.
😭 😭 😭 I know right! It’s so good and so o sad! 😭 I just love love your reactions! I was crying again with you. Noland and Calgara’s story is beautiful 😭 like it’s completely unrelated to the protagonists, but I LOVE it no less. 😭 LIGHT THE FIRE OF SHANDORA! 😭 “we are here” 😭
In my oppinion one the best flashbacks in One Piece. I mean, come on, it was just pure heartbreaking. 😭😭😭 Oda is just a genius in writing these stories.
Only 189 episodes in still along long way to go I can't wait for the rest of the arcs to come I've said it once and I'll say it again I love your reactions :).
Oda's talent to create and present characters within a chapter in two in such depth is unmatched. He does it over and over again. You get introduced to a side character for a chapter and you feel like you know them as a person. Very impressive.
From what i've read about the wings on reddit "The Shandia were once called the Shandorians. They lived on the moon along with the fellow moon races, the Birkans and Skypieans. The three races had also built a robotic race called the automata. However, when resources on the moon wore out, the three races had to leave the automata behind as they headed for Earth."
Fun fact. The noland story is from an african fairytale. Kulé and the talking skull. Well in that one the skull didnt talk on purpose to get kulé killed. This one disappeared.
You guys are SUCH GOOD REACTORS! I love how you guys get the context right even without the people from the comments clarifying or anything. You two just got it right away. Love watching your stuff and I can't wait for the next video. I recently experienced a different reactor interpret this flashback so badly that I stopped watching them. They even interpreted Noland as being malicious for bringing the King there. It's so clearly depicted that Noland was a man of virtue and was most likely taken advantage of by the King. Hence why he was executed for "lying".
I love to see how you come up with your own theories (Mary Geoise), bc thats also big part for the OP Community: to discus different theories. But Oda is always making a fool out of us haha
We actually know about Marijoa. Back in Drum Island we had the flashback of the meeting of the Kings and the location of this meeting is called “the holy land of marijoa” . Wapol and Dalton went there as did Vivi and her father
That's such a good cry for Calgara and Noland flashback story, usually we cried cause someone died but this one we cry because we know they can't meet each other again and then the death comes after that
The skull island in the left eye is the city of gold, but in the right eye is the existence of One Piece and lost who knows where?, that's the Skypiea Arc is very important in the foreshowding of the Final saga. ONE PIECE is the piece of the eye or the lost island.
some people commented that adventurers in the past were all sponsored by the king, in return, they have to report everything. as such, Noland could never reject the king's order. but initially it doesn't hurt to bring the king as I'm sure Shandians won't mind to give out the gold, unless if the king demands the giant gold bellfry.
Ace's hat has 2 faces on it, one smiling and one crying. Roger and Noland. Both came back with insane stories, one was believed and died prideful, and one labeled as a liar and died shameful.
Ppl hate on this arc and I will never understand why, so many ideas used later in other arcs more so than many other ppls favorite arcs. It’s also imo has the most underrated backstory top 3 in one piece for me. Loved Nolan’s the liar story. This arc is prob referenced the most in post time skip too
I've been watching these girls for a while. Their reactions always bring a smile to my face, but their collective perception is scary. I'm beginning to wonder how much else they'll pick up on that I missed.

I understood it as tears of sadness because the bell wasn't there and the snake couldn't find it.

“Mary joy, who is this lady” I love your interpretations and speculations.
This moment, "Answer me. What did I just kill?"
"A Snake"
"NOOOOO!"
Honestly one of Oda's best dialogues in the whole series. This part brings me to tears instantly!
Hey it's just a flashback, it can't hurt you! Oda: nop!
I cry litterally everytime I see/read this flashback, it's so heartbreaking.
I cried again watching this, it's a shame that many people skip this arc even though this is one of my favorite backstories written by Oda very well
The Skypiea arc and these 2 episodes are extremely important to One Piece as a whole. Take notes of what you can, because in the long run, it will all make sense and will be beautiful.
Oda's shandora existed before pandora (Avatar the movie )... I wonder if the spirits residing in trees is some sort of story from a mythology
Pretty sure its native American folk lore
Is Folklore latinoamericano amazónico, "el dorado"
its everywhere in the world, the belief that spirits inhabit trees. we dont have to go far, japanese myths, folklores, and legends have the same concept iirc
What did you say?
Youre just the only reactor that pay attention to the detail. Haylo how can you remember Mary Jouis at your first watch. That big brain is crazy
If you remember In the live action, Nami is reading Zorro this exact story while he’s recovering from his fight with Mihawk.
Calgara and Noland's flashback is a beautiful tragedy.
I hope someday Montblanc Cricket finds is way to Skypiea and meets Wiper.
Marie Jois (or Mary Geoise) is actually a place, not a person. Can't say much else about it, you'll find out eventually.
Also, the next saga, Water Seven, is where the series gets flipped upside down and takes a more calculated direction.
In One Piece, the following races of people have lived on the moon:
Shandia: A race that lived on the moon along with the Birkans and Skypieans.
Sky Island Residents: A race of winged humanoids that originated on the moon but later came to Earth after the moon's resources ran out. They are similar to humans, but have small wings on their backs.
One Piece flashbacks just hits different
I can't wait to see Oden's backstory
😭 😭 😭 I know right! It’s so good and so o sad! 😭 I just love love your reactions! I was crying again with you. Noland and Calgara’s story is beautiful 😭 like it’s completely unrelated to the protagonists, but I LOVE it no less. 😭 LIGHT THE FIRE OF SHANDORA! 😭 “we are here” 😭
In my oppinion one the best flashbacks in One Piece. I mean, come on, it was just pure heartbreaking. 😭😭😭
Oda is just a genius in writing these stories.
From what i've read about the wings on reddit
"The Shandia were once called the Shandorians. They lived on the moon along with the fellow moon races, the Birkans and Skypieans. The three races had also built a robotic race called the automata. However, when resources on the moon wore out, the three races had to leave the automata behind as they headed for Earth."
i have almost forgotten about this story! so great to share the experience with you :)
Kiss when the snake first appeared: "No! How scary, I don't like snakes!"
Also Kiss in this chapter: "Oh! How cute I love her." 😂
knowing what you would be getting into put tears in my eyes as early as your intro.
I love to see how you come up with your own theories (Mary Geoise), bc thats also big part for the OP Community: to discus different theories. But Oda is always making a fool out of us haha
hayla is cooking. :D
wonder how long the average one piece viewer took to pick this up. most probably did only recently when...
Also noland brought the pumpkins to the island, and Gan Fal likes pumpkin juice
189 is probably my favorite episode of One Piece
The Snake... 🐍🥲
Oda is God of backstory 90% of the time you will cry.
ONE PIECE is the piece of the eye or the lost island.
u guys finally arrived at the point in the story where u've seen that flashback! welcome!
this is one of my absolute favorite stories in One Piece
this just shows why open communication is so important
After making sure it is not a spoiler for you girls I can say Mariejois is the NAME of the Holy Land, now what that means exactly I let you discover
some people commented that adventurers in the past were all sponsored by the king, in return, they have to report everything. as such, Noland could never reject the king's order. but initially it doesn't hurt to bring the king as I'm sure Shandians won't mind to give out the gold, unless if the king demands the giant gold bellfry.
