  • This award-winning documentary from Ivory Coast follows a group of young men who undergo an ancient coming-of-age ceremony in a remote West African forest.
Their spiritual tutor is struggling to preserve the tradition of the Generation Festival at a time when young local men are increasingly indifferent to these ancestral rituals.
Thanks to his efforts, ancient custom prevails and many young men in their early twenties take part in a gruelling three-week endurance test of physical and mental prowess.

As Africans we have such beautiful traditions and cultures. It’s crazy how we don’t cherish those traditions more and make them mainstream but instead we choose to glorify western cultures.

Many traditional cultures have been eclipsed by white colonialists. Because they colonized the minds of people and make traditional cultural practices feel inferior to white colonial culture. To move forward we have to decolonize our minds.

I see a lot of critics in the comments. For me nobody has the right to judge people's culture or traditions. All I see in this documentary is how the old, ancient African traditions was teaching the young men how to leave together respectfully, how to create strong bonds with each other and how to learn and discover yourself. I'm sure if it was about a Scout camp most of you would say something else.

Same as your country, we all speak our different African languages, but in school and at work we all speak french because other tribes would have a hard time understanding eachother.

What I read: for a girl to become a women this happens naturally through her period. Obviously males don't bleed so they invented elaborate rituals to mark the transition from childhood to manhood. If you hear someone saying "Be a man" or "Become a man!" that seems to be rooted in such tradition. You'll never hear someone saying "Women up!" though. She automatically assumes her role in society as a "women", once here period sets in.

The fact that you will reduce their beautiful village to slums shows that you still live in a colonize mindset. The village is not a slum it’s modest and traditional the people are peaceful well fed and live in the tradition of their ancestors that’s far better than looking at some stupid city center where everybody’s on their cell phones constantly working them selves after death

@@monsieurpatate1573 Despite how innocent this documentary comes across, it is part of propaganda to maintain around the world, the idea that, Africans are backwards and primitive. Think about it, have you ever seen a documentary about Sub Saharan African showing anything else other than rural Poverty, tribal life and civil wars ? For people whose only source of information about Africa lies in Western media, how can you expect them to believe Africa has anything better to offer ? Yet, Sub Saharan Africa has a lot more to offer and over half of the population do not live in those conditions, some of them live in vibrant cities with excellent infrastructure and many more are springing up. Some Sub-Saharan countries have made tremendous economic progress over the last decade achieving very high HDIs like Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, another example is the city of Kigali in Rwanda which has been dubbed the cleanest city in Africa, why aren't such positive stories shown in the Western media ? This is why people around the world still think Africa is nothing but a collective of mud huts and jungles, keeping investors at bay, and even worse, Africans being "primitive" was the same narrative used during colonialism and slavery to justify the exploitation of Africans....

for your information, before the Africans met the white man and his Science, they were doing just fine.
They didnt swim the ocean to go find the white man and his science to save them.
Instead the white man crossed the ocean because he had heard of the great thing that Africa had to offer from the Arab merchants and slave traders.
Ever since the white man landed on the African shores, he has never left.

This old world version of Africa you are fixated on to show to the world betrays your calculated strategy to paint a backward picture of Africa to the world.
