In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max ties The Improved Improved Russian River Fly!
"The Russian River and a section on the Upper Kenai River are considered “fly-fishing only” waters from June through August. The classic Russian river fly is simply some bucktail tied in bright colors on a long shank hook. This is an improved version because it is tied on the super sharp, Umpqua XS410 that holds fish exceptionally well. It is more durable and is sure to find its way into the mouth of some Sockeye. Mess with different bright colors and hold on to the rod tight."

Just came across your channel. Been to Alaska the last 2 years for salmon and have not hit the big runs yet. Hopefully this year. Love catching fish on flies I’ve tied. More I can learn the better.

A smaller hook size Ahrex 220 size 4 for example and less material you would have a fly that sockeye would take on the swing. Nice pattern.

Looks like a nice hook. Does it meet the 3/8" maximum gap regulation for the Russian and Upper Kenai?

Great question, Brian! If you wanted to use this particular hook on rivers with the 3/8" regulation you would need to tie it in a size 4.
