Tried to respin a new thumb drive and it doesn't matter where I try to pull the .iso file from it fails, be it the SSD or another thumb drive. I do have a nice 3.0 150MB/s 32GB Samsung just for this.

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  6 років тому +2

      Its certainly a good way to go. I usually run a system live w/ persistence and install all my apps FIRST before installing on a PC. The apps will carry over and then I just file that stick away. I will also occasionally do an update on that stick and a remaster (I got a video for that) to reclaim the live persistence space.

      runwiththedolphin Does it not have luks full disk encryption option in MX17? I only saw a home folder encryption option, but does that mean all your personal data and files are safe while the rest of the system isn’t really worth securing?, plus since the whole disk isn’t encrypted you don’t get a performance lag due to system constantly encrypting and decrypting everything?
      I’ve been trying to decide if/what encryption option/s to use (I’m fairly new to computers in general) I’ve got luks full disk encryption in Ubuntu Mate currently, and I was planning to use Bitlocker in windows 10 pro that I paid extra to get just for that feature, but I don’t have a damn TPM on my motherboard to use Bitlocker haha another reason I’m thinking win10 was a waste of money! (But I want to learn basic windows skills too) then I discovered that both the win10 ssd and Ubuntu Mate ssd (Samsung)are both capable of hardware encryption which is the most secure and highest speed option of all anyway but now I need to learn to back up everything as applying hardware encryption wipes the drive in the process
      After thinking about it maybe just encrypting only the home folder is enough, do you recommend luks for individual folders or VeraCrypt in Linux?
      Also, would any software that is designed to be installed for ‘ubuntu, Debian and mint’ also have the same compatibility and terminal commands in MX17? Thanks for any suggestions

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  6 років тому +1

      the state of encryption is this: live-usb systems can be full-disk encrypted. but for now the only encryption we support in the installer is the user home folder. the home folder encryption in the installer uses encryptfs, similar to what ubuntu 16.04 did. I'm not an encryption expert so I'm afraid I do not have a recommendation, however I know several folks in the mx forum use veracrypt. debian software (for debian stretch) should work fine in MX, but ubuntu/mint stuff YMMV.

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  6 років тому

      We don't support a rolling release model. However, leaving our test repo enabled will bring in a lot more updates than just the stable. You could try enabling the debian testing repos, updating your kernel to a debian testing version, and modify your repo sources to match. I would think that would not be for the faint of heart. As with any endeavor involving enabling debian testing, expect breakages, especially this early in the buster dev cycle. More so for use than straight debian because of our init system configuration and our live tools may be problematic.

    If when creating persistence rootfs & homefs files of greater than 4gb, should it be ensured that the Live-USB stick be formatted in the NTFS scheme, as fat32 has a file-size maximum of 4gb ?

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  6 років тому

      If you are using our live-usb-maker tool, it creates ext4 partitions for the system partition and fat32 for the UEFI boot partition. ext4 not only supports greater file sizes, but also supports "sparse" file creation, so a multi-GB persistence file takes seconds to make.

And how make it work? Thank you, again.

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  3 роки тому

      yes you should use ext4 format to get a file larger than 4GB. if you use the "toram" boot option, you can clone a running live system back onto the same stick. I have a video on the process. you can also just use a second stick, the system can clone a running live system onto a second stick. or just use the first running live system to make the second stick from an iso. our live-usb-maker can handle all that, and does the formatting for you (defaults to ext4).

    Does choosing persist_all/root/home over persist_static, mean that the USB stick is subjected to fewer write/erase cycles and therefor a lower failure rate ?

    • @runwiththedolphin
      @runwiththedolphin  6 років тому

      In theory yes. with the non-static options, the rootfs file is rsync'd into RAM at boot, and then rsync'd again at logout/shutdown/ or on-demand. The homefs file is not stored in RAM, which given the size of data files that can be in there is a good safety factor. The real benefit is performance of the running system, as its fairly quick with the rootfs persistence file stored in RAM. with the "toram" boot option, you can also load the base read-only linuxfs filesystem into ram as well, for a very fast experience. However, the tradeoff is of course you need a lot of ram to do that, and potentially a lot of ram to load the larger persistence files we allow.

    • @tywynable
      @tywynable 6 років тому

      I saw the 'toram' option and initially thought about selecting it, especially as i had already decided on 'persistence_static'. But had second thoughts as i'm running a 2009 desktop with 4GB RAM, 16GB sandisk usb2.0 stick.
      This reply is from the MX environment the others were from Win10, so success in it starting-up, but when I reached the rootfs selection, I chose option 1 (default 4GB), then it error'd out almost immediately after trying to create it. It then asked for password creation, on finishing that section successfully, it continued straight thru to the desktop environment without asking about the creation of the homefs file.
      I'm now starting to feel that this whole vegas-wedding thing was a bigger mistake than mount rushmore :/
      Is it perhaps because I should of asked 'Live-USB maker' to be best-man instead of Rufus ?
