This is a really great review on this pattern! I read a lot of the comments, and this is where I really see that people who wear the same size have totally different fit issues. I did the full belly adjustment and loved it. I've had four c-sections, and this is my super troubling fit area because the rest of me doesn't match my tummy. I don't have any of the excess fabric you see in the sample photos, but because of the full belly adjustment, I was able to cut a 16 instead of my usual 18. Admittedly, this was trial and error and took 3 muslins to figure it out (which is why I agree this is intermediate - when I was new to sewing, there is no way I would have made 3 muslins to figure out the fit!!) since I had never done this adjustment, but in the end, it was totally worth it.
Thanks for your review! I made a muslin of these pants and decided not to pursue them further because of fit issues. I made a 14, which corresponded to my measurements, but the waist was several inches too small - even when I tried the full belly adjustment (which was the reason I bought this pattern) I found I would need a lot of additional adjustment for my shape, and I decided to go for a pattern that was closer from the start. For reference, I'm a triangle shape, not an hourglass, narrowest at my lower ribs.
I think this is an excellent way to review. I appreciate honesty. It won't necessarily prevent me from making a pattern but it gives me a heads up to look closer at certain areas. Thank-you.
I’m so glad to hear that! My hope is not to prevent sales but give a heads up. I’ve obviously made all these garments so far and I’d make them all again.
I really loved this honest review of the Glissando, however, the technical section actually added up to 70, not 60, and as the design element was 80 and your score 30, so the correct total comes to 180/200? So therefore the pattern rates at 90/100 or 90%. Anyhow, thanks for highlighting this Love Notions pattern... Now I'm looking forward to watching your other reviews, as patterns are really expensive and this is really very helpful... :-)
Thank you! I need to figure out a better way to have the graphic coincide with what I’m saying so I don’t make these mistakes. I promise I’m better at math than it appears. 😅
Thank you for your honest review. If you go to the lower right hand corner of the photo array there’s an option to make the photos full screen. Love notions sewing pattern company has a UA-cam channel where they have tutorials on some of the more in-depth elements of their many patterns. And they have links to sewists hacks on their website such as converting the button fly to a zip fly. You also didn’t add up your score incorrectly.
I would love to see a review of the Love Notes Cresendo pants. It is my first attempt with a this company. So far, my frustration in trying to print the pattern is almost enough to trash it!!
This is a really insightful review. I’m so curious, what causes a fit issues that seems to show up across-the-board over so many body shapes and sizes? As a pattern drafter what do you think happened? I got this pattern in the sale awhile back but haven’t made them yet. I will definitely check the front against my favorite fitting pants pattern. Thanks!
I think sometimes what one person thinks fits good is not the same as another. But as far as a fit issue being the same across a lot of bodies- yes that can happen! In some ways, it’s a better issue than if it was only on one person. It makes it feel fixable to me. It doesn’t mean everyone wants to deal with it or buy the pattern knowing that. But you do know what to watch for and every time I wear mine it makes me determined to adjust them. I got this pattern in the $5 sale too!
Thank you so much for these! They are definitely changing how I look more critically at patterns. Can I ask what sandals you were wearing with the jeans? They look like something I have been searching for.
Hi, I’m new to your channel and I really this video! I considered these in the past but decided against them because something about them didn’t look right to me. You explained exactly what it is, thank you! I definitely will not waste my time because I don’t know how to fix that. Also if I’m paying for a pattern I think it should be correct. Thank you again! I’m going to look for more of your pattern review videos to watch 🤗
Thanks for watching Cynthia! I’m glad you like the reviews. I’ve done a few others and they can be found in this playlist as well as the two videos that prefaced the series: Pattern Reviews ua-cam.com/play/PLOioHSQZ8vdz0OH1UQNJxFfb-jmqnZGfu.html Happy Sewing!
I am working on the muslin for the pants now, but the Glissando skirt with the zip placket hack (Whitney of TomKat Stitchery is awesome!)is one of my most used patterns ever! Love that skirt! Pants are hard due to the 3-D nature of the crotch curve. Love Notions is my favorite pattern company!
That is so interesting. The whole review would have me conclude to take a pass on this pattern. This would be a great pattern for Love Notions to review, make changes and re-release.
Thanks for watching! I ended up using these pants as an example for a Pants Fitting workshop in my Guild last summer. Everybody likes fit in their own way. These don’t work for me right out of the packet but they could work for others. Fit is personal! And it only matters what you like. I do think these struggle a bit more but maybe others like the way they fit or their body is better suited to the shape.
Thanks Saremy. I bought these in the $5 Friday feature sale but haven’t made them. Not sure how to make the fit adjustments you highlight might be needed so I will be even more slow to make them now…oh dear. I think the fly on many sewing patterns is too long compared to ready to wear but I’m in the mid to smaller pattern sizes ( so that could be a reason?) I also think there’s often too many buttons and buttonholes on many patterns but of course I’m not a pattern drafter. Really helpful series of vlogs, thank you. Leaves me head scratching about how I would need to tackle the solutions……but that’s the joy of sewing 💕🧵
I don’t know why that is a frequent oddity (long flys) on sewing patterns. But I find myself shortening them half the time. There will be a pants fitting series in my Skill Building Sessions at some point. Like the Sleeve Fitting SBS. I know folks want this and I’m happy to do it too! These could be a great example and then maybe lots of folks will be able to sew them!
I have this pattern, but I haven’t made them just yet. Have to say, i’m not liking that baggy belly they all seem to have, you might have been a bit generous giving the fit a 20. I only have one other button fly pattern and that one is long too. I figured if i ever made them again i’d have a look and see if i could omit the lowest button. The button fly wasn’t hard to do though, as long as you aren’t button hole phobic. That was a good review though, very thorough.
I’m glad you liked it. I’m not sure if it’s just me but I do find this pattern difficult to fit. I’ve seen someone recently say they love how this pants fits (not sure if they knew my experience with it). I used this pant as my pair to fit during a class on Fitting Pants that I taught this summer. I now have a good fitting pair! And I agree about the button fly. So many are so long! I made my latest pair with a zipper as a change.
Fit for me was not good even after their alteration suggestions. I had to shorten the fly and I’m tall. It still looked weird. I’ve made one other LN pant pattern and the sizing, for me, is definitely difficult and I had other fit issues. I think before purchasing really looking at the body type it was drafted for and how much time you want to spend modifying is a good way to not waste $$
I completely agree! Her body type is similar to mine and even though I saw the issues I got the pattern. I wore them yesterday but there’s a couple elements that I never finished fitting. And they bug me! I almost want to make them again just to fix it.
Great assessment. I own the pattern but don’t think I’ll make them. I need to know that I have a better chance at fitting success. The width of the fly alone is keeping me away.
I love those $5 Fridays and that’s the reason I picked it up. I like Love Notions patterns. They’re great staples. Even though I saw the fit issues I was optimistic and they can be sorted out but I didn’t give myself enough time! I’ll eventually have a pants fitting Skill Building Session in the Guild too.
I made a size 20 per my measurements and they turned out way too big for me. Baggy under the bottom and too big in the waist. I made the standard belly version. I don’t know if I need to go down one or two sizes!
Oh shoot! Did you like them though even though they’re large? I have a live stream where I altered one even though they were completed. They had to sit in a corner for a few weeks first though. 😉
🤣no, they were just too large. the denim is heavy and to try to take out the waist band to take them in would be a nightmare. i''ll just repurpose the fabric. I don't like how they wing out at the lower hip area and cut in at the knee. I've re printed a size 18 to try again and this time i've streamlined the hip point and may straighten out the leg. I really really really want to make the Helene Jeans by Ann Allen in selvage denim. Priced some of that denim today and 5 yards would cost me about $75!!! Crazy! I'd be crazy to venture down that path. But I would eliminate the watch pocket and make them exposed button fly. I do like the exposed button fly. Thanks for your reply!!@@SewSewLive
@kjlouisi4630 I love your plans! The Helene Jeans are great for someone who doesn’t have a lot of curve along the side. Straighter waist to hip. I saw HandmadePhD did a series on it on Instagram. I tried making a selvage denim style pattern (Halfmoon 101 jeans) and it was the most changes I’ve ever had to make. They came out amazing but the pattern is quite different now. I’m way too curvy as a silhouette for those styles. I love them though. 😅 Good luck!! And look for people with your body silhouette and type in the hashtags for different jeans!
I agree that that fly is awfully long. I think I might try it using a zipper and shortening the fly. I like that it is a pair of casual pants and I am all about casual these days!
I’m in the process of making the skirt and I have to say the thing that seems strange to me is how wide and short the back darts are. In my opinion they come to to much of a point instead of just creating fitting ease (I hope I’m making sense). I think I’m just going to lengthen the dart and if it’s a bit pointy the pocket will hopefully conceal it.
That’s a very interesting point. I wore mine today and the waist is pretty narrow. It’s not too small one me, but it’s definitely a pretty sudden narrowing at the waist compared to how loose it is at the high hip- and that chonky dart could be less to make the transition smoother. Good spot!
I am subscribed to Love Notion email list, and when this pattern was released, I immediately noticed the long, strange, unflattering front rise on most of the testers. I also agree the fly is too long too. I passed on purchasing this one. I don't want to waste my time sewing unflattering clothing, if I wanted that I would buy ready-to-wear, LOL. It may be why there aren't many hashtagged on Instagram.
I totally agree. I got this on the $5 Friday sale which I should have mentioned because it’s a very generous weekly sale and I appreciate it. I feel like these pants have a lot of potential! But they’re just not quite there yet. I still wear them-wore them today in fact!
@@SewSewLive yes, I love the $5 feature Friday sales too. I do love the natural twill you chose for yours. Thanks for the review series, really enjoying them!

i made the skirt and the shorts before i gave up on this pattern. i couldn't put my finger on all of the things b/c there were so many of them but the general idea that i got was that this pattern was drafted for a body shape that was completely different from mine. some issues i had were with the short wide darts and the side seams being way too curvy for my hips. i assumed it was just me though. it's good to hear other perspectives. i do think the design is cute and i like having so many options but it's just not for me.
@@SewSewLive btw i would love to see an honest review of the Mountain View Pull-on Jeans. i've been considering them b/c of recent weight fluctuations. another suggestion to add to your list!
I think you were a little bit generous regarding the pattern usability. Failing to denote the bust, waist, hip, bicep, etc makes it extremely difficult to evaluate fitting issues. Although I am not a beginner sewist I find it very annoying to have to try and discern where those points are. The lack of notches is annoying as well.
I really miss those notations on patterns. I don’t grade harshly for the lack of them because it’s sadly became the norm. I want them back! They’re so helpful and make alterations faster!
I bought that pattern for the skirt. I love Love Notions but those pants are unflattering on most of the people who made them. Definitely not a winner.
The skirt is cute! The only thing to watch for is the waist sharply decreases but you could let out some of the dart if this is an issue for you. (And adjust the waistband length). I like Love Notions patterns too!
