Thank you for the info. I'm in zone 9b (just north of Tampa) and I do see these trees from time to time in this area. Can I make it work and what extra care will be involved?
Hi, Yes you can! I would recommend place the Royal Poinciana with some protection from NW winter winds, so if you have room, let your house be a wind break for your tree, just remember to place her South or SE side of home.😀🪴
Hi Georg. These are tough trees. They have gone through a ton of hurricanes. Branches will break off during storms, but they tend to not uproot like some other large trees. But it always depends on tree health, wether in was installed in a tight space not allowing roots to expands etc.😀🪴
Great video Micheal thank you. I recently bought a home with one of these in the backyard and it’s my favorite tree. I really would like that umbrella look, but I feel like mine is growing taller than I’d like. How do I trim it to get that low wide canopy? I believe it’s four or five years old, and I haven’t trimmed anything off of the top.
Glad you have a Royal Poinciana, that is awesome! On tree canopy spread, I would allow your tree to grow naturally, only trimming off lower branches as she grows. Over time, your tree will naturally provide a wide canopy ( it's in her nature to provide a wide cascading canopy). Also, If you have nearby trees that are blocking her access to sunlight, you can trim them back a bit which will allow your Flamboyant to spread out even more.😀🪴
Are their roots really as aggressive as everyone says? Most info I find about them says they have to be really far from structures and pavement like 30+ feet. Yet I see all these photos and videos of fully grown trees only a few feet from sidewalks and homes. I have mostly clay and wanted to plant one and wondering how far or aggressively their surface can grow in clay soil. I am going to amend a lot of the yard area I will be planting in but the soil gets heavier and hard as cement once you're within 2-3 feet from the foundation. The spot I am planning on planting in is about 10-12 feet from our house and 8 ft from the sidewalk. Mainly heavy clay though...in a 9B Sacramento.
Hello Sacramento! On royals, you do need to be aware of their roots. But, I have seen countless trees planted about 12-15' away from structure with no damage, but in areas where we have lots of rock or unsuitable soil the tree will shift its root growth to more opportune areas, so in your case the tree will also want to avoid growing to the heavier soil toward your home. Here are some things to consider to help your tree and protect your home- there are relatively cheap products we have used on our park planting projects near walkways/structures; they are called root barriers. Basically they are adjustable segments of a wide, rigid sheets of plastic that you install vertically in the soil to form an underground root deflector which drives the roots down and away from approaching your home or sidewalk. The brand we most used is DeepRoot. Hope this helps!😀🪴
@@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN That's good to know because the area I would like it to grow out into is the area of the yard I heavily amended away from the house.
@@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN Hello there! I was looking to purchase the deep root barrier and I was looking online and this stuff is not necessarily cheap and let's be real, it's plastic.
I panted 2 of these trees in an area where we sometimes park vehicles and trailers. How do you suggest I prune them so the canopy is high enough to park a travel trailer underneath?
@@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN One is about 8 feet tall, the other is about 3 feet. I've been pruning the bottom branches as they grow, leaving several branches on top. The tall one is in it's 3rd year, the short one in it's second year
Ok, for the 8' tree, look for any horizontal or angular branches coming off trunk at 4' high or below. Cut those off ( but keep all tree branches growing horizontally 4' and above). As it grows, you want to repeat that process cutting horizontal branches, but always keep at least a 4' canopy at top and never cut central leader. Ultimately you will want to have 12' canopy clearance min for your boats ,so keep limbing up branches as she grows . (ie.,again at 12'/ 16' etc) . As to your smaller 3' tree, I would wait till she gets to about 6 or 7' then perform the cutting procedure above. Hope this helps.😀 🪴
How old does the Royal Poinsettia have to be to produce flowers under the right conditions? Mine is two years old and I still have no flowers . I’m in zone 9 and my tree is probably 20 feet tall.
It’s blooming beautifully at this time. Glad I know the name now. Ty. There’s another tree that’s similar in size to this one, it has yellow flowers with reddish-brown leaves(?) around the flowers. Do you know the name?
Hi! I believe the tree you are referring to is the Yellow Poinciana. And we recently did a video on that tree so you can check it out to see if thats the same tree- here is the link- ua-cam.com/video/dx2MHw7TpY8/v-deo.html 😀🪴
Hi there, Growers typicallly start cultivating them through seedlings, that then get stepped up and sold once they get to certain size. Hope this helps.😀🪴
Hi there, Royal Poinciana is a large tree and will provide great shade, but you need to make sure you plant her 8' away from sidewalks or drives and 12- 15' from homes. As to plumbing pipes, as long as the tree is not planted adjacent to an underground pipe, I think you will be fine. 😀🪴
Thanks for the video. Thanks to my job, I frequently travel to Africa and have seen this tree in many African countries. This is the most beautiful tre, in my opinion. I got seeds. I wonder if I grow up this tree in my hometown(Samsun, Türkiye). And I need your advice. The climate in my hometown is like, during the winter temperature could down to -5 Celsius degrees , but generally 10-15. During summer generally sunny and like 30-35 celsius degrees. What do you think? Should I give it a try?
Hi! You are right on the border of survivability. -5 degree Celsius for prolonged periods of time will kill the flamboyant . Maybe f grown in a protected area from Winds and a southern exposure will Be your best option. Hope this helps. 😀🪴
I have seen some small trees start flowering 1 yr out (when planted as a 25 gal tree), But it usually takes several years to flower if you start small (7 gal size)😀🪴
I like to plant my shade trees in late spring, right around the time of our rainy season. On how to plant the tree, you first want to make sure you get a healthy tree with good root structure and it's very important to plant your tree at the proper depth. We have several videos you can check out on our channel if you want to know more. Hope this helps. 😀🪴
