I have a lot of family in Atwater and Merced. You failed to mention that this was B-52 bomber base before it closed in 1995. The bombers and their refueling tankers would fly low over my grandfather's house on the landing approach. B-47's and B-29's flew out of Castle too, and it even appears in movies. " Bombers B-52 (1957)" and " Fighter Squadron (1948)" were both filmed at Castle. First time I went there it was only a fraction of today's size.
I was stationed at Castle AFB twice... 71-72 and again in 74 after a tour in Alaska... It's sad to see what has become of Castle... i have many memories there... i would love to visit the Museum one day...
Been there and will be going back again soon
I was a the son of the base photo lab commander when the museum was just before it was opened. I actually took photos of the inside of the planes given to the museum collection from the Air Force pirer to beginning hand over to the museum. The Air Force required that they had a photograph recorded of all the planes that they handed over to the museum.
I spotted an avro vulcan in your collection, my favourite
93rd SPS, Delta Flight SAC trained warrior here!
The plane is a Convair not a Corvair. It is sad that this guy cannot get enough interest from Boy Scouts or other groups to help fund and clean up that place. Those planes will be rusted and gone soon if nothing is done.
I wish they had a YB-52 with the tandem cockpit.
