I agree with Mark, I think its better than the Smithsonian as well. Not by much, but just the sheer amount of different aircraft at this place will never cease to blow my mind.
The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque is also very good. Would definitely recommend if you're ever in Albuquerque and haven't been to the museum.
We go 3 to 4 times a year since we live 15 minutes away and it's FREE. never get bored and always excited to return. Always kept extremely clean, always friendly staff, veterans willing to tell story's, it's just amazing
We’ve been there several times over the past few years. I’m not sure how it is now with covid, but there were many veterans that would greet visitors, and answer questions. The best part was when you would hear them interact with other service members that were there to visit. It gave them a chance to share similar stories with one another. Highly recommend to anyone go visit!
Once followed a tour of Airforce intel workers. They were getting trained on the history of their service and what technologies were used. Was very fun.
i live in Ohio this museum is badass. changes frequently my neighbor in the country had 27 airplanes from ww1 and ww2. he was a hardass but always took us neighbor kids on his golf cart to see his planes. RIP Mr. Reid. his house is now an airport for small aircraft. Pheasant run airport. Leroy, Ohio. I believe he donated it to a local college.
Most vets his age are, I try to be understanding though they definitely saw something’s in their time so it’s understandable tbh rest in peace to him though
As a child my dad was in the Air Force stationed at Wright Patterson. Been through the old museum. Never have been to the new one. I'm 65 now. Don't know if I'll ever get to go through it. But as a kid, it was really exciting. I was born at WPAFB.
Wright-Patterson was the last base my uncle was at when he retired in the early 70's, the SR-71 in this museum is the one he flew when he was the first squadron leader at Beale AFB in the mid 1960's!
A full day? More like a full three day weekend, plus an extra day for the Wright shop and a pilgrimage to Huffman prairie. Your feet will fall off before you get done with this place.
Ive lived locally since my birth, i remember going when it was just 2 big hangers and imax then you would have to get passes to go onto wpafb to the restoration hangar and the presidential collection, theres really cool pics out there of the xb70 being moved from the previous location the museum was located to the current location, being towed down the highway..
As a museum addict I choose: The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago Ill The Smithsonian, Washington DC USAF Museum, Dayton Oh Auburn-Cord Museum, Auburn Indiana In that order. The Air Force Museum is accessible from the bike trail since they built an underpass for the railroad just for the bike trail. The ohio bike trail network connects Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus plus other towns.
I'll have to go there now. I once tried to see vintage planes at the Oshkosh airshow , but after a long ride, they informed us that only the selected (guest who paid more $) could see them . What a gypp
Love the USAF Museum. Started going when I was very young and we were visiting my eldest brother, who was a civilian employee for the USAF as a systems safety engineer at Wright-Pat. My Scout Troop took a couple trips there as well.
Every time I visit, I always visit this Vietnam vet who works at the museum (mostly does reception at the main entrance), and one time, he told me a story about that exact Caproni Ca. 2 you see in the video, and that Ca. 2 was flown once by the mayor of New York City. He is one of the nicest vets I have ever met. I live close to the museum and I visit any time I can, and I'm now taking flying lessons. Please visit if you can, great place.
wore my grandpa's 8th airforce flight jacket with his units insignia on the front big portrait on the back, he was a pilot in ww2, looked upon that big beauty with pride, at the same time there where Japanese tourists looking grim upon it, gotta say it was a surreal moment
Outside of Yellowstone, this is easily the coolest place I've ever been. Absolutely incredible. Oof, that B-36. This place made me geek out so hard. The Valkyririe is something special. They also have a B-1 Lancer, a Titan IV rocket, and a full-sized B-52. Please, everyone, visit. I'd recommend two days for a visit, though. The place is huge. It is awesome.
I've not been there in several years, but if you're traveling, this is a must-see facility - well worth a side trip specifically to see, visit, and be awed by the collection.
@@MrDaftJustice Nope! It's FREE? Damn. I'm moving close by. I know where I'll be spending time. That balloon is a barrage balloon. They put lots of them up so the planes couldn't fly low over the troops and some of them carried antennas for radios.
That "giant rocket" in the space gallery of our 4th building, is actually the Titan IVb. One just like it placed the Cassini observation satellite in orbit around Saturn and its moons!
This museum is crazy large I had just a little bit under from Monday. They opened when they closed and I saw I would say three of the areas we looked at the Cold War space and presidential and World War II.
Thanks for the great review. You must have visited on a very slow day. These days, summer of 2021, the place is just packed most of the week. Signed: Docent, NMUSAF.
I sat in the Pilots 💺 seat. I was a volunteer for a while. Got to set in a lot of the other plans also. The B-29 that dropped the A-Bomb that ended the war.
I’m lucky enough to live extremely close and I take for granted I could Uber to the biggest Air Force museum and see one of only 4 remaining b36s AND the Memphis Belle it’s awesome
It’s the Air Force Museum. When it was renamed “The National Museum of the United States Air Force” is like when Pearl Harbor was renamed “Joint Base Pearl Harbor - Hickman”.

It was kind of painful that he referred to so many things incorrectly and he didn’t mention many of the aircraft’s names but still good video! (I’m a huge plane nut btw)

Great museum but a video of it deserves a narrator with some clue about what they are looking at or at least enough respect for the objects and history being presented to do some research into what they are seeing. In my humble opinion, outside of the Smithsonian, this is the single greatest museum in the entirety of the United States.
I couldn’t agree more, in fact I like it more than the Smithsonian!

Moved to Dayton when 6 , went to Wright state university. This place is great and no fee to enter, used to take daytime first dates there.
The fact that this currently has the only B-2 bomber on static display is mind-bending.
