I've done many of these and found that using just high temp silicone caulk is better than using both just the gasket or the gasket and the caulk. Also, removing the old gasket and dried out glue is critical. I use a putty knife to remove the old gasket material and I use PVC cleaner and a scratch pad taped to my small wire brush handle to remove the old glue; nice and clean. I always replace the cover as well since the old one is usually warped and prone to breakage if you have to pry it off. If the old one breaks when you take it off and you don't have a replacement and the parts house is closed then you're SOL until you can get a replacement. Not good on a cold day. You were lucky you were able to remove it just by pulling on it.
Also, I've found that the screws like to strip when you try to tighten at all, even with light torque, probably because they are sheet metal screws. Did any of you have this problem and, if so, what did you do to fix it? Goodman tech support says you need to replace the heat exchanger; WHAT!!! Just imagine what the customer would say if you told them you need to replace the heat exchanger because the screws stripped out. I now use 10-24 machine screws and tap out the holes with a 10-24 tap. Seems to work pretty good, but not sure fire. Goodman should have used machine screws and/or used a neoprene or rubber gasket. Poor gasket design and cover design. It usually takes me about 2 1/2 hours to complete.
I used 10 - 5/8 sheet metal screws. I had a leak right where the old screws were stripped. (see my post). Its been over 24 hours and the furnace is dry inside without any leaks so I think the screws worked and I am good to go. Thank you for your post. It helped me. When I realized the screws were stripped, I remembered your post and got the 10 - 5/8 sheet metal screws. Thanks again.
This happened to me after 3 years. The simple fact is that the material design is poor at best. The screws are bad, too. You guys are on the right track. I bet this happens more than we all know.
I would use a riv-nut. They work awesome.
i know this post is 2 years old but I am having this problem and a new gasket is only available online and will take at least 3 days. So you are suggesting using high temp silicone caulk instead? can you recommend specifically? Also, what about the little round donut gasket in the middle is that a big deal if I don't replace that?

check those goodman screws too long and they crack the box. I cut them a little shorter.

Would it be worth it to replace the inducer motor at the same time if it’s like 20 years old? Mine is fine but it’s old and cost $500 in labor already to take it out?
I just replaced my gasket. It took me about 5 hours. I would have been done much sooner but two screws (where the leak was) were stripped when I took them out. Maybe that is why the leak started. The gasket looked fine. Now what?? I remember Rick L's post below about replacing the stripped sheet metal screws with 10-24 machine screws. I found that 10 - 5/8 sheet metal screws worked very well. That Goodman wants to replace the whole exchanger is ridiculous. I didnt replace the collector box (mine was not warped or cracked) but If I have to do this again I will replace it also.
On a side note it doesnt surprise me Goodman would want to replace the exchanger for a stripped screw instead of telling the service tech to just get a bigger screw. A few years back my heat exchanger cracked and had to be replaced. I found my purchase receipt and warranty which was not expired. I called a local Goodman dealer and Goodman at first refused to honor the warranty which was parts and labor. They said my unit had never been registered therefore I never had a warranty. I remembered that when I had the unit installed the installer said he would register it. I didnt have to. Goodman wanted him to contact them but unfortunately he had died a few years before. Now what?? I had to do some online research to find out you dont have to register a product to have a warranty. You only need your proof of purchase which I had. The local goodman dealer was very nice and spoke to Goodman. Goodman finally offered me a free heat exchanger but would not cover the labor. The local goodman dealer replaced my heat exchanger in about 2 hours and charged me $200 dollars. I thought that was a good deal since other furnace companies wanted more than 5 times as much and werent going to help me with my warranty. As far as Goodman is concerned, this is my first and last Goodman furnace. Telling a service tech the whole exchanger has to be replaced for some stripped screws sounds just like something they would say.

Does the gasket go on like this video or like in your other video it was stuck onto the collector box first then attached?
Fellow hvac techs! This is not an everyday repair. It's a flaw of Goodman high efficiency furnaces. Changing collector boxes is not routine.
Thanks for sharing the video! Except for the pain in taking out the two screws on the right top (behind the connector PVC pipe) and pulling out the box (had to scrape the gasket around the borders using a thin knife), it took about 1.5 hours to replace the gasket and fix the problem. Got the gasket from Walmart for about $6. I believe it is a bad design - Goodman should have added water vents coming down, not out, from the box.
When I do gaskets like that, I always use my Milwaukee heat gun, and they come off easy-peas. Then I prep the surface with alcohol on both sides, to ensure good adhesion.
Great job, I split one of those white inducer ell’s o couple years ago. Prying it off, I also thought it was cemented on. What a project to get that fitting, why? Lmao at that filter . Thanks and don’t bleed out😜
22 screws and it still leaks. I put high temp caulk on the bottom along with the seal.
You add sealant, you have now just altered the furnace, that’s a no no, you could spend years of your life in prison for that, should the furnace be the cause of a CO poisoning, or fire, and someone dies.

It’s imprinted in a circular shape on the bottom corner of the old collector box (exterior). I had a hard time finding it as well but yeah.

Quick update ... apparently i celebrated it prematurely. The gasket alone did not fix the problem. Since the plastic box was not perfectly flat and smooth around the gasket area, i had to apply silicone adhesive, which finally fixed the problem!! I wonder why the manufacturer did not use rubber based basket. Anyhow, the adhesive did the wonder.

What kind of Rubber seal only last Two years are furnace is not old unless they put in used furnace for 4000$ because motherboard was Replaced this year.
Some time the leak water drains into the lower blower chamber and there they have control board mounted. The leak water may find way on the Control board or the transformer!!!

Curious why you opted to replace the whole collection box and not just the gasket. Was the box cracked or warped?
The usually are warped. For $30 it’s a good idea to replace the box also

@@MiHeatingGuy I guess that's what it would be, I see a couple screws on each side and looks like a gasket showing under each bottom two corners, this is what the collector box covers, my apology I am not versed in this very well.
Thank you for this video. Question - why do you need to replace the collector box I have found some videos where people just would seal the gasket in it with the silicon? My Goodman furnace model # GM9S960603BN and as per the description it has a faster condensate water drainage and no unit water leakage! How old was that furnace when it is started to leak? @@craighvac1808 dirty combustion air is bad, say it's loaded with indoor contaminates, like bleach/other cleaner, litter dust, dryer lint, other chemicals and even gases leaking through the foundation/walls. but outdoor air can be bad also, near swimming pool/chlorination/filtration, patios, driveways and sidewalks that get bleached/cleaned often. also lets not forget heavy air day/night polluted from nearby factories and even highways(salt spray!) you really have to weight in all the factors
