    To anyone questioning the saturation of the 4k master...the problem is whoever's uploading 4k videos is trusting UA-cam codecs are faithful to the original.

      seems like how they processed the screenshots crushed the blacks into oblivion. I think the HDR 10 is supposed to even that out.

      @davepastern 3 роки тому +12

      @@Googaliemoogalie yeah the screenshots in this video for the 4k release look black crushed badly, and badly colour balanced too...I have the 4k and having watched it on my 55" oled TV, I can unequivocally say that it's a crap load better than the anthology blu ray release in every single respect including colour accuracy.

    I've owned this in every format over the years, including LaserDisc. Each has its own charm. Can't expect the 4K version to be properly showed off without proper HDR, but despite the scenes adding a redish hint to flesh tones, I think they look fantastic. The color grading adds depth. I'll say, though, the Blu-Ray release did an amazing job.

    Some shots look okay but the flesh tones are not natural, way too red. Also, what this really is, is a comparison of Alien Anthology edition to the Alien 4K edition that's been tone mapped from HDR10 BT.2020 to BT.709 color matrix so what we really seeing here is a SDR to SDR comparison with the 4K edition having different color grading.

      @@ughugh351 Well « Alien was shot photochemically in 1978 on 35mm film using Panavision cameras and anamorphic lenses. It was finished on film in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. For this 4K presentation, the Theatrical Version was scanned in native 4K from the original camera negative (at EFilm in 2018), was restored by Fox (at Company 3/Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, supervised by Ridley Scott and Pam Dery), finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate, and graded for high dynamic range in HDR10 and HDR10+ (for the rare displays that support it, but if you have one this should make a big difference for you). The 4K disc includes both the Theatrical Version and the 2003 Director’s Cut via seamless branching. The Director’s Cut material appears to be upsampled from the 2003 scan of that footage (likely done in 2K). »

      Abraham Hernandez i understand, but I just wanted Atmos for the discrete height information that could have been. Between the environmental controls, computer, structural, etc, it could have added to the unsettling atmosphere of the movie in a way that we’ve never heard.

    • @abrahamhernandez8506
      @abrahamhernandez8506 5 років тому +1

      True but DTS Neural X gives you discreet height channel sounds but of course not the same as native dolby atmos but a very close second.
      I understand if you don't have an AV receiver and or Sound bar that has DTS Neural X but unless they rerelease it and redo the soundtrack DTS Neural X is the best thing you can have for discreet Height Channels.
      Believe me When I say this DTS Neural X is no slouch even for simulated Height Channels the sound movement and discreet sound is more than passable.

    The graphic you use for the Blu-ray cover is really confusing cus we are consecrating on the image but then we see the cover move in a way to suggest that a new one is being show, it's destructing and pointless cus your only saving a 3rd of the corner and it would be way more efficient if you showed the whole Blu-ray cover for a 3rd of the time

    I'm just going to say this right now and defend my man moonization and state that his comparisons are accurate for the most part. There are some differences in some colors and shades but it is pretty much a fair comparison.
    Now for the part where I state this you need to dial in your picture settings and stay away from cooler temperature and "dynamic color" modes to artificially "boost" brightness due to most mid range 4k Sets not having enough color volume and nits to boost specular highlights.
    Aside from the inaccurate colors you also have a washed out picture if you push the brightness slider and or get "black crush" when you adjust the contrast to much.
    A midrange 4k TV can get close but "never" reach the desired peak brightness and contrast that was intended of the 4k master.
    You need a really good TV regardless of qled, oled, LCD LED. That is all there is too it no magic no trickery for the "best" picture you have to get a high end and or flagship TV no other way.

    The bluray version was brightened up and everything is put behind a yellow-greenish veil (space scenes behind a whit-greyish veil). The picture looks flat and unrealistic because of the overall color veil and the hdr version allows all the red picture information and allows contrast where contrast belongs to. in many scenes it has way better depth than the unrealistic brightened blu ray picture. Cant u see that? The details seem to disapear a bit with hdr because these details were way to bright in the blu ray version but they are still there, when they are there. This seems unpleasant a bit but on a good screen u will love the better contrast because it looks way more realistic and not smeered flat.

      There are a couple of shots that are a little too red for my taste, particularly at 1:45. In contrast, 2:01 and 2:20 are an improvement in my opinion, as are the many of screen shots captured here. There is a pastiness to the skin tones in the Blu-Ray that seems to have been rectified on the 4K. Hopefully the red shots are the exception and not the rule, but I'll have to wait and see once I have the disc

It should be about light and it's just killing the colour balance too me. I don't get the choice to name the versions like that.... First of all there is no such thing as a "aliën antholigy edition".... That was just a collection of the first 4 movies on DVD/Blu-ray. Those movies were not edited in any kind of way visualy..... And the "40th Anneversary edition" came for DVD/Blu ray also, so this should be named the "4K" edition

    My question is: Is what is presented here an accurate representation of what one will see on a correctly-calibrated 4K TV as you're actually watching the film? I ask because I've seen other comparisons between 1080p Blu-ray transfers to 4K transfers where there appears to be a dramatic shift in color timing, etc., with the 4K that makes the 4K look utterly dreadful, yet when I watch the 4K in the moment, it looks perfectly fine.
    What is being presented here as far as flesh tones, for example, makes me greatly concerned for what I'm going to see when I buy the 4K disc this Tuesday. It looks like whoever was responsible for the color timing just cranked up the contrast to bring out reds without actually double checking whatever algorithm they were using against an original print of the film. Flesh tones look far too red, almost sunburned or lobster-like; it reminds me, frankly, of just how much red and pink was brought up in the 2004 Blu-ray of the original "Star Wars" when compared to prior releases.

    • @abrahamhernandez8506
      @abrahamhernandez8506 5 років тому

      That redness you are referring to is dependent to your display you need to tweak the colors in your TV'S color management settings to reduce the red shift in the color and the pictures tends to reflect the natural tone of the skin more so.
      Again a correctly calibrated TV is personal preference as it depends on your specific taste so don't feel bad if your display does not look the same as this comparison as it is up to "you" what kind of picture you want.
      Like I will preach to people with any new TV "Tweak, Tweak, and Tweak your settings 👍

    The majority of it looks better despite some overly saturated colours. The skin tones however are just horrible. Everyone looks too red and unnatural. it’s a hard one to decide on. The original blu-ray still looks great. Think I’ll wait for the box set of them all to come out before buying them all...again.

    Man these skin tones on the 4k Anniversary edition look like a nightmare.. why... And btw there is no difference in details at all. It appears that the 4k version is nothing but a poorly colour graded version of the film.

    • @captaindallas9793
      @captaindallas9793 4 роки тому +1

      Don't worry, these screen shots look nothing like what you're going to get with the 4k disc. If anything, the 4k is actually less saturated in terms of skin colours when compared to the bluray. In regards to the overall colour grading of the 4k, it is also a little more muted than the bluray, but you can be rest assured its worth the upgrade in terms of screen resolution. Tiny little details, hidden in the dark depths of the Nostromo, like weathering, faint lettering and photos on the walls and control panels can now be made out clearly. If you're a Alien fan, its a must have.

    • @abrahamhernandez8506
      @abrahamhernandez8506 5 років тому

      Not saying you setup is shitty need to tweak your color in the color management settings to tame the greenish hue out and then switch to warmer temp and again stay away from cooler temps and dynamic color mode on your TV colors will look brighter and washed out but color will be inaccurate.
      I'm sorry that you don't see the difference but unfortunately all Tv's regardless of "Price" need to be fine "tuned" away from the default settings to get that picture to the way you like.
      As for sound it is the same lossless soundtrack that as on the previous blu ray. If you were expecting DTSX and or Dolby Atmos this release doesn't have it.
