Venice is everything they say about it: over-crowded, over-priced, and totally wonderful. It's definitely worth the hassles.

  • @Aswinishere

    MY TIPS;
    1) find an airbnb in the Cannaregio, away from most tourists. Don't stay on mainland, it would be waste not to enjoy Venice in the early mornings or late at night, when most tourists have left.
    2) Get a day pass for the use of the water boat and...
    A) from the F.te Nove "C" stop up north visit for (half) daytrips Burano, Murano, and Torcello. Leave early morning to avoid groups.
    B) about these three famous destinations, if you want to find decent food, I recommend to find it on your first island stop: Burano. Farther than that it becomes too expensive and average food is served.
    C) visit the Giudecca and enjoy the view/walk.
    D) visit the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore and enjoy the view of St Marco square from tower (small fee)
    3) visit the Castello area if you don't like crowds. Basically avoid the center. The best restaurant I found from my trip is called 6342 a le Tole. Trust me on that one.
    4) don't bring big luggage otherwise you'll have to use a taxi. Streets are narrow with lots of bridges and steps.

Here is a good tip, if you sleep in Venice, do wake up early before the tourist boats and go to the street and the fish market when only locals do the shopping. Have an espresso with the locals. Around 8.30-9.00 am streets start filling up immensely with tourists, but before that you will be surprised by how different dynamics the Venice can have.

    6. Avoid the main route leading from the train station across the Rialto bridge to Piazza San Marco. It's crowded with day trippers, and lined with tacky gift shops and overpriced restaurants.
    7. Avoid the peak season. And do stroll around late at night or very early in the morning. One winter night a friend and I found ourselves absolutely alone on San Marco square, with only two old men singing old Italian songs. That picture book Venice is still out there, but not in August at 3pm.
    8. Don't get burgers at Burger King and sit down at Piazza San Marco to eat them. Not only is it rude, but you can actually get fined for this.
    9. Do go out of your way to get out of the way, when Venetians want to get through. Especially if they are carrying groceries. The supermarkets are pretty far apart, because there are so few residents left. And those few residents are the only reason why this town doesn't yet feel like the Venetian Las Vegas Resort.
10/1: I agree, you will get lost. And you should get lost. It's one of the prettiest things to do there. You'll never walk too far to never get back, and you won't walk into a bad neighborhood because there is none.

Because the other cafes that surround the Piazza lease out the areas adjacent to their establishments. You could sit out in the middle and share with the pigeons...

I went in December. It was a little quieter. It was amazing to see the staggering amount of wealth. Toddlers in full-length mink coats, hats, and muffs. I felt so out of place in my plain, black, wool coat.

Venice is lots of fun! You have to take a boat from the airport to the city, which is both fun and annoying at the same time :-/
Also, instead of buses, taxis, and subways, they have bus-boats, lol.
One thing Walter didn't mention which is *_VERY_* important: use the toilet before you leave your hotel cuz the only kind of public toilet you'll find are those holes in the floor, ugh!

That's to offset the cost of the salaries of the city or establishment employees who keep them clean. There is usually an attendant sitting at a table at the entrance. Very commonly seen in restaurants as well throughout Europe.

The best time to visit Venice is at night! I visited in May and spent whole night walking around with my friend (btw both girls) - it's a ghost town! We saw less than 10 people the whole night. Plus it's amazing to watch the sunrise and enjoy early morning when locals come out for their daily duties. After this I hated being there during the day, having to push through tourists with elbows.

I have been to Venice 5 times and I can not wait to go back,it is my favourite place to take a holiday in the world,i always stay on the island of Lido which is stunning and has a great range of accomadation and a great long beach and it is much quieter than Venice but is only 15 minutes away by the vaperetto boat which as a 24 hour service and you can also get to and from San marco airport by a boat service which only takes about 45 minutes.

Thanks for the tips. Going back to Venice this summer. Last time I was there, I did not enjoy or appreciate it very much because it was raining, flooded, and I was walking on planks. I ate at a restaurant as well...and the food wasn’t that great. I will be staying there longer this time around and can’t wait to explore the islands (including Murano, Burano, and Torcello) a little more. Any restaurant suggestions?

The water buses are somewhat expensive / crowded , but run to time. Tip : if you're there for several days get a multi-day waterbus ticket (multiple uses, gets you anywhere). The water taxis (NB taxis not waterbuses) are VERY expensive - be prepared. Despite many "features" of over-crowded Venice, I still love it and try to get there once a year.

make sure to contact the hotel and find out which stop on the vaporetto.
I stayed in Castello. the Orange line (Arancia). took me right to the stop at the Rialto bridge. I still got lost. after I found my hotel , it became easier to find everything because I had a frame of reference.
Find the train station you can take a day trip to Padua or Verona.

I can recommend staying at the Lido, we have been there in a small B&B called La Perla for way less than it would cost on the main island and it was 20min away from Piazza San Marco. It's also less crowded on the Lido and the restaurants serve good food for normal (not cheap) prices. Also I think the gondola ride for like 50-100€ compared to a vaporetto ride for some Euros through the Canal Grande is not worth it.

a good app to have on your phone is MAPS.ME. You can use this app without having any WiFi whatsoever, you just need to have your 'location' on. it will tell you exactly where you are in any country, considering you download the country in the app itself. just like Google Maps. But offline

Espresso Price specials in Italy Edit
Price "al banco": In Italy, the local community has the maximum price of an espresso at the bar ("al banco": "standing" at the counter). This amounts to a maximum of one euro in all of Italy.
Price "coperto": A service fee ("coperto") is only added when you sit your espresso while sitting at the table, and in some places of interest such as in the Piazza San Marco you may find an expected obelus for the livemusic.
Voluntary social prize Sospeso (Italian extravagant) Espresso with social added value so an espresso for a good cause. The Sospeso is founded in the Neapolitan tradition of helping. If you had a successful day or just want to make a social contribution you drink a sospeso, you drink an espresso and pay two. If you can not afford an espresso yourself, you can ask for this "revoked" and drink it for free. People who are ill are able to participate in social life.

Hey, which 4 cities do you recommend us to visit ? We have like 12 days. And I figured 4 cities, 3 days each. What is your TOP 4 cities in Italy?

Florence and Cinque Terre!! Loved both of these. Sienna is lovely and Rome is a whirlwind. Out of all the places though, if i went back, I'd stay 4-5 days in Florence and then another 4-5 Cinque Terre.

But you feel guilty for making the gondolier guide you through the canals in the rain, so you make it up with a higher tip!

4,000 tourists per resident? WOW! No wonder I read that some Venetians actually want to limit the number of tourists allowed.
Maybe one day people will have to book a trip to the city the way we book entrance into certain other venues.

Saved by Grace Its not true. 4 000 tourisrs per residents? You say that there are 800 000 000 tourists there? Thats like the whole population of Europe

SC, you're correct! He said the ratio was 20,000,000:50,000, which is 400:1 and not 4,000:1. But that's still massive.

Saved by Grace Venice has à population of 250 000 people. That means that 100 000 000 people go to Venice. If its true its crazy how much tourists there are there.

SC, he was referring to the population of the people who live in the historic old city, which is about 50k.

I never understood people who rate entire culture and food based off tourist traps. Anywhere in world you got to use bit common sense.
