i think people on tiktok confuse trends with fads. i think in general trends are more widespread (moving from skinny jeans to looser fits and high waist to lower waist, transitioning from blacks to browns and golds to silvers, etc) which have been happening at a slower pace for a longer period of time like you said.
but!!!! on tiktok people see specific items or aesthetics (leg warmers, the house of sunny dress, balletcore) styled over and over and say it's a trend when it's actually more just a fad which have always been short lived (think like JNCO jeans and scrunchies in the 80s and 90s)

Oh my god, this video spoke to me so much, especially about fashion being art and you can enjoy art without owning it, I love fashion I could watch it all day but Tiktok fashion isn't art its rabid consumerism and I always feel like I need a shower afterwards ...... or is that just me? 😂I'm 50 I've literally seen all the trends before but videos like yours Laini help me keep the faith, love what you do! ❤️

This is something I learnt a couple years ago with consumerism as a whole, to treat stores more as a museum where you can pick up things and admire them while you’re there. Even walk around the store with it and have time to think if buying it will add any value to your life or if just enjoying it in the moment is enough. I find that consuming fashion content and saving pics to my Pinterest boards is largely enough for me

I've learned something interesting lately. I was reading a book about fashion, and the author claims that "asymmetry implies nudity," their rationale being that because the human body is symmetric, wearing asymmetric clothing implies an incompleteness, or a lack of coverage.
The weird angles trend reminded of this. idk lol

In the pre-internet days (like 1980s-1990s), there were companies that would go out and photograph counter-culture street style around the world and assemble it into a big physical lookbook a couple of times a year. This would then be purchased by the big fashion houses to help them design with modern, unique style elements poached from actual people going about their lives in the real world in bold, original looks. We should all aspire to be that original street style, not the runway big business derivative!

Am I the only one who groups all the trends of 2020-2023 into “muted Y2K thrift store Chamberlain-Djerf chic?” It all fits into the same cohesive box to me lol I don’t even need to know the micro fads because the large trend as a whole is so clear to me, I feel like I get it and can recreate that whole general vibe without knowing the specific pieces. Wish I knew a better name for the 2020s macro trend

My problem for the last several years has been that in store fashion near me is ugly and thrift stores are over picked. So I ended up wearing a t shirt and jeans, and completely losing my personal style.

Idk if this is an option for you, but I find when I go out to more rural areas I always find better stuff in thrift stores! Places with different demographics than myself, cuz we tend to look for different things and not all picking over the same items
Edit: I second the Depop thing when you’re ready to splurge on a specific item, and I really think people sleep on Facebook marketplace!! It’s the closest thing to an online actual cheap thrift store, vs Depop and Poshmark are like curated consignment shop vibe

What you said about just enjoying art and not always having to be doing it yourself reminded me of what RM from BTS said about his enjoyment of art - sometimes when he listens to music, he feels a sense of jealousy and competition if he feels somebody made a “better” song or album because he’s a musician. However, he’s able to just enjoy and find peace in paintings and art and walking around museums because he’s not in that world and can’t do art himself. Sometimes you are able to enjoy things so much better when you aren’t involved with it!

All so true. Everything comes back in style in some way every 3-7 years. Even when I look at what was popular to thrift. The nightgowns and nighties as daywear was a thing in 2012 and 2015. First as vintage camisoles and slip dresses. Then the same style came back in but layered with relaxed t shirts etc. I’ve kept a lot of the same clothes especially vintage for the last decade and almost all of it goes in and out of rotation year to year and I rewear almost every “trend” multiple times. Puffer coats were in and out since I can remember. I love these videos from you because I shop way too much (thrifting eBay Depop on and on) and these videos make me realize the best place to shop is in my already giant wardrobe. You also got me back into selling my own clothes. Can’t believe you’re posting all this golden content while you have a newborn. Very impressive. ❤

I had an older couple whispering (really loudly) about my Jadon boots in the cancer clinic. Like. They are basic af black boots. They aren’t trendy even anymore. I bought my first docs in 1979 (I’m old too). I’m at a point where I enjoy wearing My style. It’s usually toned down punk or ungendered trending. My style icons are Vivienne Westwood, Betsey Johnson, Dianne Keaton and Helen Mirren. I love watching fashion shows and Fashion is my favorite art form. Trends and fads just aren’t me.

I think the best thing I've done (unknowingly) for my personal style has been to never download tiktok lol. It's like I'm in a bubble, of only youtube and pinterest, which has a bias to it, (I think because its older people who use pinterest lol?)I also find that there's more chic and WEARABLE outfits on pinterest than what I've seen pinned from tiktok. It seems that tiktok prioritizes looks cool, rather than feeling genuine.

FOR REAL !! I think people just do the trend predictions with what they are currently seeing ... thats not a prediction, especially if you are involved in the fashion world 🤣 But i think the fashion girlies are ahead of mainstream of course, so people who arent into fashion see this and think oh ok thats what we will be wearing, but those who are into fashion, runway or pinterest will have been wearing, & seeing these trends years before

love this approach honestly cause i myself for example am living in summer season and obviously a lot of influencers that i keep up with are talking about cold season clothing and what i like to do to get a little inspired is to revisit the past videos about summer and spring, so what you said in this one is exactly what i feel doing that: most things are still trending and have been trending for the past two years, especially considering what has been happening to the world until this point. so all this things that are "trending" are basically about relying on what you already have been liking and maybe expanding on that. sometimes these predictions go a little crazy 'cause they forget how people feel about finding comfort in their pieces, but like c'mon of course we wanna keep what's working for us... (and honestly, we saw with tiktok what happens when you go for the overly trendy piece they try to shove on our faces non stop during two weeks and then nevermore)

I’ve been feeling so uninspired lately with fashion, but i think it’s because i really want to step away from “needing it” all and the money and capitalism side of it (and always feeling not rich enough and stuff, especially with massive inflation we’ve been dealing with in the netherlands) and the amount of time fashion and finding cool stuff takes from me when i couldve just been creative with my own wardrobe and actually wear my own clothes and done some of the other things i want to accomplish….. i’m doing a detox in fashion for a bit i think haha. Thanks for doing these videos, i find your opinions super interesting!! And realistic, which is lacking in the digital world/social media 🥲!

I feel like we saw dribs and drabs of it from about 2020 but not enough to be a trend at that point… from reading I’ve noticed it only really took off again in 2022 which I guess means its in its full throttle trend mode right now!
