Turn your shoulders back 90 degrees…
Rotate through the shot…
Much has been said about it, but the turn is one of the most misunderstood concepts in all of golf.
And so in today’s video we’re going to learn how to absolutely nail your shoulder turn for a powerful, consistent, and repeatable golf swing.

Probably one of the best pivot examples I've seen to date. This is dead on Mike Austin's method that saves the lower back.
Yes. Exactly Mike was a genius.
I've never seen anyone explain the rotation this way. Excellent explanation and demonstration. Thanks
I was doing exactly what you pointed out. That video helped me more than any other swing change. I could never figure out why I was moving off the ball on my backswing. Thank you so much.
Great explanation here. I've noticed that a lot of people think that they have to get their entire body mass over the inside of their right foot in the backswing. It's really that you're getting that feeling more from moving your hips over the right foot, but your upper torso and head stay more or less where they started, just wound up at the top. I know that was a little convoluted, but hopefully understandable. Lol. I personally feel like I'm lowering my left shoulder down, right on top of the ball. For those people who have always shifted their entire mass to the right, doing it the correct way is going to feel very strange and like you're moving the top of your body left in your backswing.
I believe you are spot on. Will definitely feel different if you are used to turning off the ball.
YES DEMENUS420 . THE MIRROR IMAGE OF OF A REVERSE C FINISH , IS A FORWARD C AT THE TOP OF THE BACKSWING . WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING IS THAT THE BODY FORMS AN ARC DURING THE BACKSWING WHERE THE RIGHT HIP IS OVER THE RIGHT FOOT AT THE TOP OF THE BACKSWING . AND THEN AT THE FINISH OF THE FOLLOW THRU , THE LEFT HIP IS OVER THE LEFT FOOT . IN THE IMPACT ZONE IT SHOULD FEELS LIKE HEAVING A MEDICINE BALL AT THE TARGET .
This is so underrated. Don’t recall seeing this anywhere else. Not communicated like this at least. When I do it, it feels familiar like when I’m hitting it well. When my game falls apart I don’t get that feeling but don’t know why. In my mind I’m doing the same swing but don’t know what’s missing. This gives me a way to know. Great vid.
Feels wierd at first, like I’m tipping over, until impact and the ball jumps off my sweet spot! Crazy!! Awesome job! Thanks again!
I think this is why my miss tends to be a pull hook. My chest and pelvis are too stacked when I turn. When I'm hitting well, my lower body is engaged much earlier in the transition, adding some tilt.
Thanks Zack. Excellent video as usual.
The greatest video, I'm not sure if it just clicked for me, but thanks.
I've been playing forever. But visualizing the down swinging was always my problem. The tilting the lower spine over the front hip was eye opening foe me. I can thank you enough.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible difference this move made. I have been struggling with taking the club inside for years but not now! Thank you
Glad it helped!
Excellent Zach!
Great explanation! I could not believe how this gets my lower body moving correctly - Wow. When I do it right, cross bow straight!
Wow! Thank you!
bill mehlhorn explained how we turn back in the seventies. he told us that we should turn just the same way as we would if someone appeared behind us and we turned to look at them. the muscles down the left side of the right leg are activated to draw the leg back back and enable the chest to turn. one great drill to do is to grip the club with just your left hand and then look behind you, as though someone had just appeared behind you, and then press down with the left side of your head to return it to the address position. then swing back with your left arm and put your right hand on the club as you swing back. you will create get a big turn; whilst maintaining in a level left position at the top and your shoulder angle will be set at 45 degrees. it's curious, isn't it, that we had the pivot scene in "follow the sun" 70 years ago; and, subsequently, no one has ever really talked about using the legs as a pivot, over the past 70 years.
Thank you so much for this video. I generally make the tilt properly on the backswing, but have had trouble shifting properly on the downswing. Your illustration of the shift in the tilt of the spine relative to the lead leg makes it so clear.
I tried this Tilt then turn instruction for the first time last evening at the driving range and it is "magic" . I hit the most consistent and crisp golf shots that I have ever hit in a long time. No more over the top shots pulled left of target and no more fat shots caused by swaying in backswing. Can't wait to get out on the course. Thanks
Hi. Amazing insight. Explains the reason why I cannot stay centered.. At 78 I have been struggling and now that I have made the changes I have a great deal of improvements. I am most grateful for your tip.. Many thanks
While there is some truth to "not much new under the sun", I do think the swing continues to evolve. Sometimes that even means going back to older ways (like a left wrist flexion at the top of the swing seems to be coming back to some of the tour players). With all the data that has been coming from doppler radar trackers and camera trackers, there is so much more minutia we can understand about the swing...which is both good and bad.
Plus, there continue to be new players to the game that get hooked enough to eventually look up a video of how to swing on line and fall down the rabbit hole of excellent teaching tips on YT (both good and bad for sure). So, keep posting those tips even if your repeating yourself, because one of the best ways to learn is to hear the same thing over and over and over. You might not fully understand it the first time, but each time you practice it and hear more from others, you start to understand...then, go back and watch the older ones that confused you and you'll be surprised that you actually now DO understand it. Russell Heritage is great and repeating the core tenets of the swing in videos in new ways (and sometime the exact same ways)...it kind of drills it in over time.
Great job :)
First I’ve seen this type tilt action and visually detailed in explaining it so well! Excited in working this on the range today!
Agree! Excellent explanation of how the spine moves vs hip tune.
Outstanding Zach! This is some pro stuff that you will typically not hear about!
Wow! That is just amazing. I have struggled with this for so long, actually trying to stop my hips from moving laterally in my backswing because that is what I had been taught. This makes so much more sense and why my backswing is so much inside and I can’t stop coming over the top. I can get away with it, to a degree, with my woods but not my irons, which I am struggling with. I can’t wait to try this tomorrow and hopefully get my swing back. Thank you so much for explaining this so well.
One of your most important lessons. Thanks
Best video I've ever seen. I can't believe how much this has helped my swing. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for a great explanation. I've constantly struggled with "the turn" all my life. I'm going to give this a try.
This is a really good video; you’re right; the two cameras really helps! Thanks!
This is one of the most important teachings for suffering golfers. Thank you & I shall practice tomorrow following your great instruction. Looking forward to grasping the essence & learn more from you.
Thank you professor. Pure gold Zach!
It finally makes sense! Thanks so much for this Zach
Thanks this really freed up my swing and improved my timing
Tks for adding to the confusion.
No problem glad to have helped. 🤣
Best video on the turn I've ever seen. I have been taking the club to far inside and moving to far off the ball for 40 years. This is the root cause. Thank you so much for this video. Can't wait to go play and hit the range. Finally I will get consistently in my ball striking. Sometimes I hit it really well but a lot of times not as solid or consistent. I knew the core problem was my initial turn but didn't know how to fix it. Thank you kind Sir!!!
moe norman tilts toe back when he moves his right hand grip under the club which is reverse to yours??
Always enjoy your videos. This one is fantastic. Hopefully my brain can process it and I can take it to the course. Thanks.
Can't wait to try this, best explanation of how to tilt.
Thank you for this!
Well done Zach. Great explanation of this and I think pretty key to what I do wrong in my own swing. Thanks for covering this so well.
Very nice explanation! I’ve fought a slice for years, but thought I was doing everything right in my turn. Now it makes some sense what I was doing wrong. Never saw anyone explain this before! Thank you! I will be trying this tomorrow.
I so needed this!
As a huge fan of Mike Austin who back in his days was a genius of the golf swing is probably saying watching this Man you make me proud
👍
" i donot turn, i tilt"
Mike Austin.
I absolutely love that move !!! Gonna give it a go. thx
Super good explanation.
Really good instruction Zach. Always had a problem staying centered and tended to move off the ball.
Super Zack. I have been having trouble with my irons. Now realizing I was way to flat in my back swing. This has been a big help. Thanks
Hammered home my lesson I took after many years of playing golf. Leaving now to go try it out.
Very interesting and informative. Thank you.
This might be the best tutorial ever! Thank you! Almost like you were speaking to me! I have had so many peeps tell me to just come from the inside…this actually tells me how!!!
Fantastical tip the way to tilt. I really tilted the wrong direction. Thanks a lot Mr fabulous.
Crucial advice, thanks! Mike Austin!
This is the best backswing tip that I’ve seen!
This explains years of swing errors. Wow! Thank you Zach.
Hi Zack, I have been teaching this for years with much success. I am glad you’re on track with information that will help all golfers. Good work, keep it up.
so you said he has been off track all along until now?
goshhh i am in deep trouble.
Great idea on how to start the swing by swaying your hips a little to the right. I have been starting my swing at the very bottom and go inside a lot with my clubs thus bad contact with the ball. I appreciate this little "trigger" move instruction. Thanks!
It makes sense. Thank you Zach. 😀
Very interesting and unique move . I have always tried very hard to not sway hips on the backswing . Seems to work well so far . Thanks so much .
Thank you for pointing out this lower back tilt.
Great teaching thanks
Great advice. Eye opening.
That was good Zack. Always enjoy your high end refreshers that always seem timely because of their importance.
Thanks
It's Zach
@@DougKercher that would be Siri.
lol
The best back swing teaching ever
Fantastic info-I have been absent for a while but back now!
If anybody doubts this works here is a real life example. I practiced this move off a baseball infield that was baked to cement like ground. Started hitting shot after shot flush. Next day shot a -2 and my previous bestever was a +3.
Best video ever, thanks Zach.🙏🙏
The best way zu explain the little leteral move. +10% in ballspeed an +15% in distance. Great!!!
Terrific, original instruction.
Thanks again for this
Am able to see the ball. I always had a problem losing the sight of the ball on my backswing. I understand now that I was turning level and not tilting. I went to the range yesterday and OMG was I striking the ball solidly. The only swing thought I had, was to tilt my spine right on my backswing and left on the downswing. Thank you Zack best video on the explanation of the swing
Outstanding lesson. I had never seen this drill.
This is excellent thank you
Hey Zach, this move is unreal and has transformed my iron game! It just seems to keep the club in the slot without any effort. Now striking the ball higher on the club face and out the middle consistently. 7iron distance has gone from around 150 to almost 170 yards with lower launch angle. Thanks!
This has been the best explanation to the rotation in the golf swing I have seen. Now I have a much better understanding. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks .
I agree. It's about everything.
Very nice take on the turn/tilt. Much like the Mike Austin method when you think of it.
Exact Mike Austin move!! And this dude ignores all the comments that mention the great MA
Yes. His biomechanical concepts of the golf swing were 60 years ahead of their time. If he had more patience and was more understanding I believe he would have transformed the game of golf.
Very good insight though I have a question. Would it not be better to set up with some left side bend at address to assist getting the correct spine tilt on backswing. Why set up with backward leaning spine tilt only to lose it in the initial lateral flexion. Would not a left side bend set up aid in preventing a too much inside takeaway?
Great observation, I definitely notice that players that have yes golf for many years have too trail side bend at address, and that cause the club to go inside quickly, also they have this issue in their short game.
This technique has been a game changer for me..thanks.
Just been watching Eric Cogorno video and he recommended I check your video out as he said great instruction - certainly is, I’m over range today Zach and I’m just going to concentrate on practicing the movement.
Thanks from a dull rainy day in London 😁👍
Welcome aboard! Cool to get praise from another Instructor
Brilliant Zach thanks so much. I presume it is same concept of Driver? Also is the first move in downswing to move lower spine latterly? It seems to shallow club so well...
After watching my swing on video I can see this is something I have been doing wrong exactly as you demonstrated. Have never seen it explained this well. Thanks
Glad it helped. We should all video from time to time, to make sure we are doing things well.
played with a low handicapper the other day, this is what he was trying to describe to me, it Had me searching golf video's about tilt vs turn....I think you nailed it! not sure I can ever make this change after year of bad swings but at least its something new to work on! thanks!
You can definitely fix it relatively quickly. Use alignment sticks! Put one about an 1"-2" to right of your hip and work motion Zach describes in slow motion. Also make sure your right butt cheek slides along and deeper at the top of your swing. Conversely the same thing should occur with the left butt cheek into the follow through. You can practice this with alignment rods and/or in posture with your butt a little away from a wall. Again do this in slow motion. Difficult at first and will feel strange. Start out with easy swings until you can get the feels and gradually ramp up the speed. Physically more challenging moves so it helps to be in shape. Think of Tommy Fleetwood and his finish when practicing. Once you get the moves down you will be shocked how your pattern should be increased Club head speed, better centeredness of contact and better distance control. Film your swing too! Should get the proper feels in a few days and ramp up to full speed in about a week of practice. Initially you will hit some very fat shots but don't get discouraged. You will learn how to get the handle of the club moving up and left through impact. Power!
Gotta try this. Makes great sense from the master.
Wow ... stunning!
Wow great instructional advice on UA-cam. Rare! Great video Zach 👍
this is great
I get it now, it's more of a hip turn and then a down swing, instead of a shoulder turn and hip turn at the same time. Excellent explanation!
What drills do you recommend to start or initiate the downswing? Great vid btw!!
Your description is perfect to teach a hip backward move before body rotation to get the rotation plane more vertically tilted to match the geometry of the stable rotation point being much higher than the ball.
I think loading the right foot to the knee is necessary as well. Good explanation.
Great point that is an important aspect.
Last night I was working out some swing thoughts in my garage and searched spine tilt and found this and got confirmation for the last 10 years I have been doing it wrong. On my way to driving range today to work on this move ... thank you; thank you; thank you!
A1 tip , thanx
Great video
Thank you..❤❤❤❤
Great video and insightful. so apropos.....
Super-good explanation of hip movement here, Zach. You are right - this is a subject that is mis-spoken about by most instructors (or at least mis-interpreted by those of us trying to learn it). I'm anxious to see how this insight translates to the driving range!
The word has definitely mis lead, and confused many out there.
Zack, I really liked this explanation of the backswing. I'd been in "limbo" for the past while and this explanation freed up my backswing and permitted me to engage the downswing effectively. I'm tracking your videos, and really like your approach. Thanks!
Similar move made by Sergio as explained by Brian Manzella
Great job, if I was in your area I definitely take clases.
great video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very informative
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Haven't played for 4 years and haven't been able to pinpoint why my takeaway is slightly more inside than it should be. This did it.
Hi, what is the sequencing of this, do you move the right hip back before you move the club? I have an issue with Flt swing and think I am doing a turn motion as described.
Zach, Just had a AH HA moment. I always thought that was a sway but you explained perfect. THX
I love your videos, yes I think you are right about this.
Pure Gold!
Thanks
