    I have the zen dac v2 paired with a desktop amp.
    Is the chord mojo worth considering in December of 2021?
    (Given all the issues- heating, erratic battery life, micro usb etc etc)
    I don’t think the battery will hold charge for long so would use it as a compliment (maybe replacement) of the zen dac on my desktop.
    Getting it preowned for $230

      That's a straight-forward question that gets a complicated answer. Whether anything is "worth it" is a personal decision; I can't pretend to tell you what you'll think is right for you. I can give you some points that might help make a decision.
      The Mojo's technical/build issues have been widely discussed since its release. Chord has shown they don't care. Only recently did they start selling replacement batteries; when I contacted them about my Mojo's battery replacement a little over a year ago, they told me to do it through a third party and they had nothing to offer. Their customer service, in other words, was less than stellar.
      In my experience, it seems that the Mojo's batteries will need to be replaced every 12-18 months, depending on how heavily you use it. I don't know how much Chord is charging for replacement batteries, but third parties charge around $100. That's a year-over-year expense that's a bit hard to justify objectively. And, there's no telling when the batteries will be discontinued.
      The Mojo does have connectivity most portable amp/dacs don't. So, that's certainly in its favor. However, its UI is the most obtuse of any product I've ever used. While you'll get used to it, there's really no rhyme or reason behind it.
      The Mojo's sound signature is warm. It's the opposite of what Rob Watts promised pre-release--ie, that the Mojo is as technically savvy as a $30k dac. He was claiming transparent sound, yada yada. I did an analysis of Chord's financials and showed how just prior to the Mojo's release, Chord was in serious financial trouble, based on their public tax filings. The truthfulness of Chord's marketing, therefore, has always been questionable at best.
      Finally, and possibly the most significant factor, is that Chord is due to release a purported replacement for the Mojo in January 2022. It's all speculation, and Chord fans strongly believe that's the case. Of course, knowing Chord's pricing and the way the industry is currently operating, I wouldn't be surprised if a Mojo 2 is more expensive.
      Overall, you might be better served waiting another month or two.

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 роки тому

      You should be cautious with AQ stuff. Not only is their stuff overpriced but it’s also marketed with a significant amount of false and deceitful information. The Solo isn’t exactly what audiophiles would consider “audiophile grade” but if you like it’s Dac, then you don’t need to buy something else. The Solo should be able to drive the 560s so amplification probably won’t be an issue. If you still feel that you may want something else, check out the Ikko Zerda, Monolith USB Dac, or even the Shanling UP4 or Qudelix 5K.

    I didn't hear much of a difference between the sound quality of the Chord Mojo and the Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt using the Sennheiser HD 800S out of an iPhone. The Chord Mojo sounded thicker/heavier with a little more dynamic range whereas the Cobalt seems to have wider soundstage and more sparkle. I don't want to say the Mojo sounded muddy because I don't think it does but when instruments were panning left to right, right to left it was easier to follow on the Cobalt. The test track I used was "Numbers (DJ-KICKS) (Extended Vocal Mix) from Booka Shade. I'm really digging your content. Glad I found your channel.

    Can you give me your honest opinion here? Why do you think think so many think the mojo sounds better? You are the first that says the cobalt spouses better.
    Your best honest answer only.

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 роки тому

      Why would I give you anything other than my honest answer?
      Why do people like a quarter pounder from McDonalds rather than a cheeseburger from Carls Jr.? I have no idea why some people think the Mojo is god's gift to humanity. If it works for them, then that's great. But the Mojo is not the clearest-sounding dac/amp, nor does it have anywhere close to a neutral sound signature--and these two arguments have been proposed by not only Chord but also this company's fanatics. The point of this video was to highlight the significant cost differences between the Mojo and the Cobalt. Whether someone prefers the sound signature of one or the other--or neither--is up to the individual. I don't think I ever said in this video that the Cobalt sounds "better". I try very hard to not talk about my personal sound preferences in my reviews.
      The Mojo is a very expensive product--one which is overhyped for its supposed technical performance and use of FPGA programming. The bottom line is that if someone likes the sound of a product, they'll talk about how amazing it is, irrespective of the product's faults, shortcomings, or even the manufacturer's treatment of customers. The opposite is also true for those who dislike the sound signature of a product--as they'll minimize or outright reject the positive attributes of a product and only speak of the negatives.
      Frankly, I have no idea why you're asking me this question. It's premised entirely on me making a conjecture as to why somebody else might like the Mojo. Who cares what somebody else likes? The only question is what YOU like, what will appeal to YOU. I'd caution you against believing that a product is good or amazing or sounds perfect just because its overly vocal promoters keep saying that. There are forum posts replete with former Mojo users who did not find the product to their liking, for either faulty build or the sound signature not to their tastes.
      If you want my subjective experience about the Mojo, here it is: I enjoy the sound of the Mojo. It's a unique product with some very quirky issues. It doesn't sound or perform like what Chord originally promised, but it's certainly an enjoyable amp/dac. But I won't promote it as a must-have product, or the perfect one, or that everybody loves it. That's simply not true.

      @@NoThemeReviews wow that’s quite a reply.
      The simple answer is you don’t know.
      My intentions wasn’t to disagree with you on your take but to understand your take on why? For example, Is it because sound is subjective or are the people being paid by Mojo?
      Anyway, there are reviewers that state the mojo is warm (emphasis on lower midrange). Others state that the clarity and resolution is not affected by this and that it is even more detailed than the cobalt.
      The problem I’m having is always seeing opposite reviews. This shit has got to stop. It confuses all of us when trying to make a purchase decision.
      P.S. there are videos where some blind AB test cobalt vs red and fail miserably. Maybe the placebo effect is real.

      @@h1a8 Your guess is as good or bad as mine when you ask to divine some stranger's motives.
      People will not stop boasting about the products they love. Nor will people stop talking about how amazing something sounds when they haven't bothered to do actual tests. What else do you expect from the internet?
      I fully understand your frustration, but there is no solution to contradictory information. When people tell you that the Mojo or any other product sounds "the best", then they should also provide thorough examples of why they reached that conclusion, HOW they reached that conclusion (the methodology is as important as the results), and whether those people did real A/B tests with a passive switch box. If you don't see all of this information provided, then the best course of action is to minimize the credibility of those opinions.

      I haven't heard the Modius. But I'd caution you against thinking that there are "improvements" among these dacs. I think you're being misled by the hype "reviewers" who keep making false statements about dac sound signatures. The bottom line is this: none of these dacs will have any audible noise; there are slight variances in sound signature from dac-to-dac; and all of these dacs do exactly the same thing--convert digital to audio--and there's nothing special about them.
      The difference between the Modi 3 and Soncoz, for example, is mostly in form factor and outputs. The Modi 3 is fairly neutral, but has a slight treble emphasis, compared to the Soncoz.
      Your amplifier and headphone pairing will have a more significant influence on what you hear than the very minor differences in sound signature among these dacs.

The Multibit and Cobalt have more analytical sound signature. I'm sure there are slight differences between the two, but not significant. The bigger difference is between the Mojo and the Cobalt/Multibit. The Mojo has a much warmer sound signature, boosted and loose bass, rolled off treble frequency, a little muddy mids section with loss of detail, less than average soundstage.
      The Mojo is more "intimate." That works pretty well for headphones. I'm not sure how well it will work with speakers, though. Warmer sound signature with speakers in a medium-sized room tends to just sound muddy. But that's my personal opinion.

    I need your help. I have heard that the Pro-ject Pre Box S2 sounds amazing paired with Tidal due to its MQA unfolding feature ( I have no idea what that means haha ) But I’ve also read from other hi fi site reviews that is fails in comparison to the Cobalt. Just wondering if you ever came across any Dacs with MQA support and if it makes a difference. If not it’s okay. Thanks for this review. I was looking for a more portable option. Even just to use around the house. I can’t easily move my JDS Element 😆

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  5 років тому +2

      I have a video uploaded about MQA and DSD. MQA is not particularly amazing. It's a lot of hype with very little returns. I did a test between Spotify and Tidal, and noted there is indeed some difference where Tidal sounds more open and with slightly (very slightly) more detail in certain songs. However, overall, I do not believe that MQA is worth the exorbitant cost for Tidal premium service at $20 per month.
      There are several portable dacs that support MQA decoding. However, you may not actually need them. MQA can be decoded through software, depending on the music player you have. Some will argue that is not the same as actual hardware decoding as in a dac, but I have never seen scientific data or study demonstrating an average person can tell the difference between MQA software decoding vs MQA hardware decoding.
      I think that DSD and PCM is much more beneficial than MQA--especially since MQA is not widely accepted and only very niche companies like Tidal use it. DSD is also niche, but at least provide significantly better resolution to standard 24 bit audio...theoretically.
      I also believe that buying a device for MQA specifically is probably not the wisest decision. I'd suggest looking for a device that will drive the headphones you intend to use, has minimal signal noise, and has the sound signature you prefer. Given those parameters, you'll probably find many options within your budget.
      Specifically regarding the Pro-ject devices...I've never heard them and can't comment about their effectiveness. But keep in mind that no matter how wonderful it might seem, it is still only decoding MQA, which itself isn't spectacular compared to standard audio.
      The Audiophiliac has a video briefly discussing this stuff. I don't recall the title of his video, but I'm sure if you search for his channel with "MQA" as a search parameter, you'll get a hit.
      Let me know if you need any other info.

      I have two Project Pre Box S2s and the Dragonfly Cobalt. Before purchasing the Project I was able to compare the Chord Qutest DAC ($2500AUD), the Primare I35 DAC, the Cambridge Audio CXN DAC with the Pro-Ject in my system. I assumed I would be buying the Chord Qutest. I use Roon with Tidal integration. I tested my DSD, CD and Tidal MQA. The Project DAC was a revelation. Clearly sounded better than the Chord. Firstly - I’m mostly a vinyl listener- the Project was much less digital sounding, very engaging musically. The Chord was a mess! There was a lack of coherence in the sound, very digital like. When I returned the Chord to my HIFi dealer he confided that he had the same opinion and used the Project on his home system and played between his PS Audio top end DAC which he said the Project approached the qUality of the PS Audio ($9000AUD) sound.
      The Cobalt is awesome. Both Project and Cobalt sound great. I use cobalt with IPhone & IPad. I compared both in my second set up and there is not a lot between them though the project gives me better RCA options and better up sampling - for virtually the same price. I think as do my two HIFi dealers - different stores & both own and use the Project at home - the Project S2 is one of the greatest bargains in HIFi and one dealer thinking he can’t work out how Pro-Ject are making money on it and wonders if they are making a loss on them.
      Lastly MQA on Tidal & Roon sounds great. MQA clearly makes a difference. My ears tell me all I need to know.

    honestly, 24 minutes is too long, so I didn't hear your review.. So I won't say anything about the sound quality.. I still prefer The Mojo because it has many more use cases. I use it to drive all my headphones with my computer or phone via UsB as you do with the DF Cobalt (I have the Red). But I also use it as a dac with my Cambridge CXC cd transport in my main system, and the next day I take it to the other room and use it to connect my to the the second system and watch movies.. So I must admit I'm really curious about the sound quality of the cobalt, It can't compete for functionality with the Mojo.

      Yes certainly. You’d have to be fairly conservative with the EQ however. The Cobalt, like most dacs I’ve used, tend to distort after a point. It’s different for every Dac, so you’ll have to experiment.

      That depends on your sound preference. If you want a cleaner, more analytical sound signature, then the Cobalt is the better option. If you want a warmer, more bassy sound signature without a lot of detail retrieval, the Mojo would be the recommendation. The Mojo also has greater amplification than the Cobalt.

      @@NoThemeReviews thank you for response sir. But some of the reviews that mojo has a wide soundstage, deeper bass (bass on/line out ) and sweet trebles compare to nx4 dsd. both headphones out and line out? Neutral sound can pair warm and bright earphones?

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  4 роки тому +1

      Amp/dacs have nothing to do with soundstage. That’s a myth repeated by those who have no clue how recordings are made. Soundstage is achieved by a combination of microphones and their placement during recording, the method of mixing, and the headphones/speakers. There is no amp or Dac that will ever affect this.
      As for those who claim the Mojo has “wide soundstage” I have two responses: first, that’s clearly false since the Mojo in fact cannot affect soundstage. Second, even assuming you’re inclined to believe those people, you will rarely hear those same people tell you exactly what they heard, what equipment they used, and how they conducted any tests to reach this conclusion.
      The Mojo has never and will never be anything more than a warm amp/Dac. It can sound very pleasant but that’s not the same as being the best.
      As for pairing gear, you can use whatever combo sounds nice to you. But warm sounding headphones will sound less detailed and have more bass emphasis with warm sounding amp/dacs. Using neutral amp/dacs is usually a better option, but not a rule.

    This channel accused audioquest as snake oil salesman. WHY THE POSITIVE REVIEW?

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  4 роки тому +3

      Because I judge products on an individual basis. The Cobalt is a sonically superior product compared to the Mojo. AQ sells BS promises about cables and USB denoise filters. They lie about “computer audio” and are patently dishonest about audio in general. But their headphones and Cobalt are good products. The headphones were designed by someone else who no longer works at AQ-hence why AQ has not released any new headphones in years. And the Cobalt provides excellent, clean audio that is also available on cheaper devices.
