Great detailed video my 2016 Kia soul never leaked oil. I stupidly had Walmart change my oil this one time because they had a sale. Ever since Walmart touch my car it’s been leaking oil. I just removed the engine protector cover and it’s completely covered with oil. From looking at the engine protector cover it looks like most of the oil is leaking from the oil filter. What would cause it to leak from the oil filter is it possible that I would need to replace the oil filter housing or is there a gasket that actually on the housing. I was going to change the oil but I don’t want to until I can troubleshoot where the leak is coming from or could it be the filter gasket or the actual filter wasn’t tightened enough. I truly believe the Walmart technician did this on purpose because he noticed how much I take care of my car. Thank you
I figured it out thanks to your video there’s a big black screw attached to the top of the oil filter with a wire going into it once I cleaned everything I went underneath with a bright light at night and bam 💥 it was so obvious where the leak was coming from I tightened that screw and the leak was gone. I’m convinced the Walmart employee lives a bitter hateful life and he loosened that screw so it would leak a a few drops a minute. It’s incredible once I tightened it the leak was gone. Thank you I feel like your video was a Christmas gift to me. Merry Christmas
I'm glad you found the source of the leak. I looked at our 2017 Kia Soul 2.0L engine's oil filter mount. The only black item with a wire is what I believe is the oil pressure sensor when screws into the oil filter mount. I truly hope the Walmart tech was not purposely trying to cause a problem, but you just never know. I'm glad my video helped you solve your problem. Merry Christmas!

Pre-filling the oil filter is certainly be done if you can keep the environment where you're pouring the oil into the filter clean to avoid introducing dirt into the filter as you pre-fill the filter. There are many vehicles on the road that have oil filters on the side of the engine which prevents the pre-filling of oil into the filter, like my 2006 Toyota Highlander.
I got confused when I removed the little oil cover and saw no oil pan access. I think the tray is shared with the 1.6 and 2l engine hence why there's a cut out for one and the cover for the other since I think most people got the cheaper models with the smaller engine
My wife is the primary driver and she loves it. It has just under 21K miles on it now. So far, we have not had any issues with it other than a dead AGM 12-volt battery back in 2019 about this time of year when I was away at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.
I do show the removal of the plastic shield starting at about the 8:20 time into the video. There are some screws in the front and some 10mm headed bolts in the rear and the shield comes off very easily. It is a fast-forwarded section of the video, but you can see me removing the fasteners.
I would recommend changing it on each oil change. Metal drain plug washers will conform to the slight imperfections of the drain plug and oil pan when the drain plug is tightened. Getting the washer in exactly the same spot is not easily done. A new drain plug washer will have the best chance of forming a leak free seal.
No. I am a mechanic over 40 years and have never changed it unless it is damaged and have never had a leak from one or a problem with any of them. If it makes you feel better with a new one buy one and sleep at night.
@@oto169 If the washer has any ridges in it, just take some fine sandpaper on a level, flat surface and gently sand it off. Then you can reuse it. If no ridges are present, no sanding required.
Looking in the 2016 owner's manual, the 1.6L engine has an engine oil capacity of 3.8 US quarts vs. the 4.23 US quarts used in the 2.0L engine. The 1.6L engine's oil pan drain plug is located on the front side of the oil pan vs. the rear side of the oil pan as in the 2.0L engine. The oil filter is located in a similar position and it is the same part number as the oil filter used on the 2.0L engine. The steps to change the oil should be roughly the same for the 1.6L engine.
The front section has some plastic phillips screws that need to be removed. The sides and back have a few 10mm headed bolts that need to be removed as well.
According to the 2017 Kia Soul Owner's manual, the 2.0L engine requires 4.0 liters of oil (4.23 US quarts). I usually get one more quart/liter beyond what is required. I fill the engine to the specified amount (4.0 liters) in this case. I confirm the oil level looks correct on the dipstick and then start the engine and take it on a test drive looking for leaks. After the test drive shows no leaks, I let the engine settle for about 15 minutes to let the oil settle into the pan and then check oil level again to confirm it is at the full mark on the dipstick.
Hi Steven, I assume you meant "oil lid" (that being the place where you fill the engine with oil). There should be no smoke coming out of anything inside of the engine compartment. There are several possibilities but the "smoke" could be really be heated engine coolant (steam) or actual smoke. Either one suggests something might be wrong with the coolant or oil pathways in the engine allowing them/it to access the combustion chamber of one of the cylinders. I would recommend getting this looked at by a Kia service department (if under warranty - or qualified automotive shop if not under warranty) ASAP. Our 2017 Kia Soul with a 2.0 GDI engine does not have any such symptoms.
If you mean after removing the cap while the engine is either running, or within a few minutes of it being shut of, it's most likely oil vapour. I've seen it on all engines and it's normal...
I agree there may be a small amount of oil vapor that can come out of the oil lid fill hole from a running engine or shortly after it was turned off, but I would not classify it as "smoke". To me, smoke implies some sort of output that has a distinct color / odor that one would not associate with hot engine oil.

From what I can see in the service manual, the "oil pressure switch" is located on the front side of the mount for the oil filter just above the oil filter. At 19:44 in the video, you'll see the oil pressure switch at the 1 o'clock position where you see the oil filter mounting base.
It's not too bad to remove the lower cover. I tend to prefer to remove those type of covers since it gives me a better view of the lower engine and less chance to drip oil on something that I can't access to clean. Thanks for checking out my video!
If you're like me and don't want to go to the trouble of removing the plastic shield on the undercarriage, the oil filter is hard to reach, and you probably won't be able to use the type of filter wrench seen in this video. I agree there are a variety of oil filter wrenches that will likely fit through the opening. The one I used was the one I had on-hand that fit the filter size. I use an oil filter cap wrench style for my other vehicles (because I have one that fits those filters). The only downside of leaving the plastic in place is that oil will likely drain on to the top side of the plastic cover requiring some cleaning after the oil change.
Having the engine "at full operating temperature" before draining the oil is certainly a way to perform the oil change, but I usually prefer to let the oil cool down a bit (not cold) before changing the oil. It gives the oil on the top end of the engine a chance to drain back into the pan. I check the oil before the oil change to examine the condition of the oil so if any problems are occurring in the engine it may show up in the old oil before it's drained out. I check the oil level before starting the engine after the new oil is in the engine as a safety/double check of the amount I poured into the engine. Too many service techs pour in what they think is the correct amount for the engine only to have under (or even over) filled the engine by a large amount. That happens a lot to owners of my other vehicle a 2017 Chevy SS Sedan with a 6.2L LS3 engine that takes 8 US quarts, but many service techs only put in 6 US quarts. Double checking the oil level before the engine start is a good safety precaution.

We had our 2017 Kia Soul about 18 months when that picture was taken. We don't live in an area where it snows (except on rare occassions), so it's pretty easy to keep the car looking new. It currently has just under 19K miles on it today. My wife doesn't drive it as much this past year due to COVID-19 restrictions at her job which require her to work from home four days a week (for now).

The oil change process should be almost identical. Just make sure you check the owner's manual for the proper oil capacity and weight for your engine. I've learned you cannot make everybody happy on UA-cam, but I try my best to do so.
I document the tightening of the oil filter as 3/4 of a turn past the point of contact of the gasket with the metal base. That is enough compress the gasket for a proper seal without compressing it too much to cause metal-to-metal contact. Some oil filters with o-ring seals (some OEM Toyota filters for example) will have the o-ring seal compress completely if overtightened and start to leak due to metal-to-metal contact. I've never had an oil filter leak in the past 45 years on the hundred or so cars I've changed oil and oil filters.
My wife bought a Kia sole a 2021 it has 4k miles it's burning about a half qt 1400 miles that say that's normal lol. And that's with 5 -20w oil. Now I have a ram with 5.7 I tow a boat and run it hard same weight oil it don't loose or burn any 45,000 miles on that one Kia products are junk they have a lot of issues pretty bad when they been building cars for all this time and they still can't build one well I guess you get what you paid for but I see Porsches doing the same thing Subaru Porsche Kia Ford they tried to use a dual-clutch transmission that looks like it should have been shot up in space we had one of those junkers to brand new car Ford Focus they had a good one the early Ford Focus was a good car then they built this thing with this dual-clutch transmission nobody could repair these they said all you have to change the seal so they change the seals three times in there for clutch discs and this car didn't even have 20000 miles on it they can put all this electronic gadgetry on this stuff but it's far as the engine and transmission they don't have a clue anymore that Dodge Ram with a 5.7 Hemi in it that's a good motor and that 6-speed transmission can't beat it
I'm sorry to hear that your wife's 2021 Kia Soul is consuming that much oil. So far, our 2017 Kia Soul with 19K miles on the odometer does not consume any oil between oil changes. All auto manufacturers will have an acceptable/allowed amount of oil that can be consumed before they will pursue warranty work on that engine. Most of time that allowed amount is 1 quart per 1,000 miles. That seems like a lot of oil to consume and still be considered "ok". Make sure your Kia Soul's oil consumption is documented in the service record with Kia so if it starts getting worse than it is now, it will be on record and Kia should repair it under warranty.
Putting oil in the filter before installing the new filter is a debate that is often had when changing oil. Filling the filter with oil directly from the new oil container may seem like a "clean" thing to do, but depending on the environment dust/dirt can accidentally get into the oil filter. There are millions of cars on the road with side mounted oil filters which make it impossible to pre-fill the filter with oil and they survive just fine.

I left the shield on and had no trouble. The only spill you will get is from the filter but it's minimal and easily wiped up.

You should be using the proper tools to tighten an oil filter housing.... for sure !!
Using a tool or by hand should both work as long as the oil filter is not overtightened.

Now I have a ram with 5.7 I tow a boat and run it hard same weight oil it don't loose or burn any 45,000 miles on that one Kia products are junk they have a lot of issues pretty bad when they been building cars for all this time and they still can't build one well I guess you get what you paid for but I see Porsches doing the same thing Subaru Porsche Kia Ford they tried to use a dual-clutch transmission that looks like it should have been shot up in space we had one of those junkers to brand new car Ford Focus they had a good one the early Ford Focus was a good car then they built this thing with this dual-clutch transmission nobody could repair these they said all you have to change the seal so they change the seals three times in there for clutch discs and this car didn't even have 20000 miles on it they can put all this electronic gadgetry on this stuff but it's far as the engine and transmission they don't have a clue anymore that Dodge Ram with a 5.7 Hemi in it that's a good motor and that 6-speed transmission can't beat it
I'm sorry to hear that your wife's 2021 Kia Soul is consuming that much oil. So far, our 2017 Kia Soul with 19K miles on the odometer does not consume any oil between oil changes. All auto manufacturers will have an acceptable/allowed amount of oil that can be consumed before they will pursue warranty work on that engine. Most of time that allowed amount is 1 quart per 1,000 miles. That seems like a lot of oil to consume and still be considered "ok". Make sure your Kia Soul's oil consumption is documented in the service record with Kia so if it starts getting worse than it is now, it will be on record and Kia should repair it under warranty.

Putting oil in the filter before installing the new filter is a debate that is often had when changing oil. Filling the filter with oil directly from the new oil container may seem like a "clean" thing to do, but depending on the environment dust/dirt can accidentally get into the oil filter. There are millions of cars on the road with side mounted oil filters which make it impossible to pre-fill the filter with oil and they survive just fine.
