Shadow’s story got me to reach back out to my mother after years of trauma and try to work things out. It certainly had an influence on my life, at least. Thanks for helping me understand better why the story made me feel that way.

Feels like ever since Frontiers, Sonic’s been on a redemption arc. The movies showed that videogame movies could work, where Detecitve Pikachu showed they were profitable. To me, Frontiers was the foundation of a new era, a new chapter for the blue hedgehog. Further emphasized by this game. While SEGA’s “Power to the next level” reveal, showed a campaign of remakes and remasters of classic titles that made SEGA. Something the fans had been clamoring for, for years. SEGA seems to be confident to finally go back to their roots with that 90s edge that put them on the map. While I’m happy for them overall, it truly *feels* like Sonic is finally returning to form. And I am hopeful for the future. Especially the third Sonic film!
There's also one important thing that this game does importantly which is backed by the Dark Beginnings anime. In Shadow the Hedgehog (2005(?)), we see that Shadow finally leaves that traumatic past behind him, but not in a way to accept it and move forward, but detach from it, forget about it, and move forward. This is not the best option because you're just ignoring an important and impactful moment in your life. Left unchecked, it can bring consequences. By the end of Dark Beginnings, we are shown that Shadow, although moving forward, still suffers from his past. This means that even if he claims that it doesn't matter anymore, he still needs to process it because he was on the verge of tears in that scene. Why is this important? Because at the end of Shadow Generations, Shadow FINALLY accepts his past, accepts his sadness, allowing him to cry. A first step to truly move forward.
yeah i also have a feeling Rouge is going to use this impactful moment of Shadow's to start blackmailing him or something otherwise she's gonna tell Omega and Omega is not a guy who minces words let alone respects you if you cry. what he does is hunt down Eggman and call dibs
@@taminostam9912 Rouge blackmailing Shadow? The same Rouge who is shown that if the entire world was against Shadow, she'd be on his side? Omega disrespecting Shadow? The same Omega that sticks by Shadow even when told that he'd eventually betray him and seal him forever? Get out of here.

I love Sonic because this series where you have a talking humanoid blue hedgehog that runs at the speed of light makes me feel more emotion than most other stories. That’s not the only reason I love the Sonic series, but it’s a good reason.
What's with the Rouge disrespect? 😂 Just like how Maria was his support in the past, Rouge is his support in the present and future, i mean they finally canonized a version of the speech she gives in Sonic 06 that got retconned previously where she says she'll 'always be on Shadow's side and will be 'there for him after all this is over', hell she even says she feels compelled to say that Shadow is special to her and he's one of the very few people she respects. Yes, she's the comedic relief along with Omega and Big, but she's the one that tells him to enjoy his time with Maria and Gerald, but to be careful and remember that he had gotten over that past trauma before and to not let himself go and stay grounded. Hell this game just served to strengthen their bond, and i can totally see their relationship evolving in the future if Sega wants to, they definitely built a solid foundation for it. now she's the only character in the Sonic gang to see Shadow CRY 🤯
Yeah, way too many people give Rouge a swipe when it comes to her role in the other characters’ lives, but she’s developed a decent presence with the Sonic gang, especially with Shadow. I thought it was obvious that they both care for one another in their own stubborn, silent way, but I guess too many people don’t see that. They need it spelled out to them 🤷♀️ hell, even Omega has grown to develop feelings of care for them both, and he’s a robot! It’s not subtle in the slightest, people just don’t wanna see it.
Found it a bit weird especially since Orbot and Cubot are there and I don't really see why. I know talking to them is optional (unless you're 100% the game) but it's still a little strange to me that they're included. Though, that's definitely nit-picking on my part.
Without Rouge and Omega, I'd argue Shadow wouldn't be as compelling as he is, so I love Omega's and Rouge's dialogue in this game. They're three cynics who have trouble getting along with others, but being around like-minded people lets them show their true colors they otherwise don't bring to the surface.
Thought I was watching a video from a 100k subscriber channel with millions of views, but 277? Only? This is beautiful, real content. Thank you so much for the amazing content!
Really think you oversold Sonic Generations story, but Shadow's was told perfectly. I really feel Shadow Generations gave Shadow more closure than his own game did just by Shadow being able to actually say "goodbye" to Maria and Gerald compared to just having to "let the past go" like he did in Shadow The Hedgehog. Shadow was able to keep "moving forward" after Shadow The Hedgehog, but he never "healed" which while bittersweer at the end this game allowed him to do that.
The Biolizard is not an alternative if Shadow didn't work. It was a prototype. After it failed, Gerald started working on Shadow with the Black Arms DNA (which the BL didn't have).
Amazing video, truly fantastic work all around. You even managed to add some depth to Sonic Generations, and that's always something i appreciate!! A little thing too: I think every bosses represents something about Shadow and relating to his traumas all throughout the serie. Biolizard is the first one, the prototype, Shadow fought it once he discoevred his true purpose, and wanting to accomplish Maria's wish. He's ready to destroy once and for all that prototype that could cause Maria's dream to be vanished in an instant. A version of him driven by anger, rage and suffering. Metal Overlord is linked to the context of the game and the level in which Shadow goes through. In Heroes, Shadow believed himself to be a clone, one among all the others. He's not special, he doesn't even know if he's real or not. Metal Overlord says directly that he's the real Sonic, the real person, not a copy. As such, Shadow faces the trauma of his existential crisis, when he didn't believed to be the real one. But at the end of Heroes, he regain his confidence, telling himself that he is the Ultimate Lifeform. Mephiles is a tricky one. He's Shadow's shadow. A twisted version of himself that is only fueld by conquest and destruction. At least in 06. In Shadow Generations, he wants to live again, to have a place in this world, just as Shadow wanted, because the world could have been at any moment agaisnt him for everything he caused. Finally, Devil Doom, just as you putted into words, represent all the lasting sins of Shadow. Won't add much since you already did a great job. Once again, i love your video, keep going like this, and take care!
In throw it all a way theres a line that goes "You see a light wherever you go, you have it face it again and again", it may not have been intended but this would be a great way to give the song a deeper meaning since maria said a shadow is how to find the light, so shadow always has to see the light, and since in that scene maria is the light it means shadow has to face maria's death again and again
While this video really isn't about this, I think sonics' tone should be heavily linked to his confidence and bravado. Like when he is just waking up in the white void, Sonic sounds closer to frontiers with how dire things look, but as tails and the others get restored he gets back that bravado and sounds a lot closer to most games depictions of him.

Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) may have been an majority agreed upon designed mess of a game (granted I had fun with regardless) but Shadow the Hedgehog 2 just hit everything perfectly from gameplay and story perspective. Also, does a hell of a lot charactization lifting for a game franchise that doesn't really do that alot because that isn't the primary focus with these games. Having conversations that appear in the different portions of the game at different points it interesting to see how their lives continue beyond the games. Omega and Shadow apparently go on raids together as Omega's way of having a good time. Big has somehow visited the Arc multiple times and seen Shadow zipping around there. Maria and Shadow apparently did homeschooling together and he was never good at turning in assignments. Gerald has his journal the player can read but also drops that while in the beginning the rings Shadow wears were originally meant to limit his power for the world's safety now they do the opposite and keep Shadow safe as apparently, at this point in the series, his power is at such a point that if Shadow did go all out he'd die. Of which by game's end we can see Gerald is proven correct, as Shadow begins to generate an aura that looks identical to his Super form except the Chaos Emeralds are not causing this. And then there is Rouge, who is pretty much saying she'll always be there to keep the guy honest and prevent him from faltering. Of which while it's clear she doubts how much an influence she has others clearly think differently. Little details like that do wonders on making the characters feel like they have history and are alive despite how little we actually see of them. Kudos to Sega on that.
Shadow is my favorite character exactly because of this. He has traumas. He has anger, sadness, regrets, everything humans have. He is essentially human. His stories are almost always better than Sonic's, because of the conflicts in his character, his developments in each game he's explored. He is not a perfect character like Sonic, he is human. Also, he gives good messages to people. Like when he says that he determines his own destiny, when he decides to stop trying to be what the others want you to be in the 2005 Shadow game... he is just a very good inspiration and very relatable. I can understand everything he goes through.
Shadow’s journey through his own trauma culminates in using the powers given to him by the very embodiment and cause of that trauma to defeat him in his most powerful state. If that is not A+ storytelling, I don’t know what is.

Fun Fact: There is an interation he has with Maria that shows he has/ had a crush on her. If you interact with her in the hub world, I believe after the cutscene when you first them. Fun Fact: There is an interation he has with Maria that shows he has/ had a crush on her. If you interact with her in the hub world, I believe after the cutscene when you first them. She says something, but after she says "Shadow, are you blushing?" or something along those line, I have a screenshot. Since it's a hub world interation, it could be non canon though.
I'm glad that I watched the Japanese version of this story. Kirk Thornton's acting kind of ruins the final scene. He needs to put more emotion into the character. Also, does Ben Diskin's Black Doom voice sound similar to the Japanese voice of Black Doom?
