- This is a rare, live, amateur recording from a concert with Corelli and Tagliavini in 1981. The ending was missing from the aria so the last bars have been dubbed in, for the sake of completeness, from another recording .
This precious movie is one of the few clips of Zeani singing live in a performance. Her voice is in marvellous condition yet she had regularly been singing huge roles for well over thirty years.
There was an ecstatic review of this concert in "Opera" magazine. Please contact me if you have it as I cannot find my copy.

I was sitting beside the gentleman who was video taping this performance.
I am grateful to him for having preserved one of the great moments of this
very special vocal artist. The evening was thrilling and Virginia Zeani was the
centerpiece of this most cherished memory for me.

I have never understood how Zeani is not a household name. She has so few studio recordings. Thank goodness for videos like this! Many thanks for posting!!!
I've heard the one studio Traviata she did on a lesser-known label. Her voice did not record well. She was best appreciated live.

Zeani did not portray the role; she INHABITED it! An absolutely electrifying performance, by one of the most brilliant divas of this or any time. Brava & gracia!

There is nowhere such a clear and captivating example of what it means to sing verdi.
Clarity, Power, correct pronunciation, impeccable articulation of words and imperceptible exchange between recitative and singing.
The combination of this perfect technique was what made his career go so far.
Even in recent years, his voice remained impeccable.
Unfortunately, as Virginia was a discreet person, she didn't get many contracts with record companies.
Apparently, this is why (according to Roger Beaumont): “She made a very successful record of arias for Decca in 1956. They asked for a longer contract, but at that time she had been married a year and had just given birth to her son. She was already under contract with a lot of the Italian opera houses and was very split between her relatively new marriage, her new child and thought at the time that there was ample time for her to record when her life settled down. By the time she was free to make recordings again for Decca, they had discovered Joan Sutherland and then Montserrat Caballe was just coming onto the opera scene. Decca never renewed her contract.”

OMG! This IS what Aida should sound like (and so rarely does)!! I wish she had performed Leonara in Trovatore (and recorded it). Her amazing tone and full Verdi voice combined with the coloratura abilty of her earlier roles would have made her the BEST EVER for that role (as she was for many others).

She was born in October 1925, so in 1981 she would have been 55 - 56. It was her last public concert and, as you say, despite the huge number of performances she gave, always in major roles, "the voice is :ageless"
