Growing Corn - Part 1 Planting and Germinating

  • Corn, Once The Garden Darling. One of the most popular crops of past backyard gardens, corn has fallen out of favor recently. Large, cheap to buy at the grocery store, and a bit tricky during pollination time as you need several plants to ensure healthy ears. Despite all that, a HIGHLY rewarding crop to grow in this day, during these times.
    A poor transplanter, corn is usually direct seeded, even here in Canada. However, with a finite warm growing period, if you want corn early, you gotta seed corn early. As a warm-weather plant, it will NOT germinate in cold or even cool soils. Bit of a pickle eh? Well, let's get these guys seeded early like a typical seed in typical seeding trays.....and then see where we get to!

      Hi. Well what type of soil do I use ? Some people say put 3 corn seeds IN one hole ? In case some of the seeds get taken by the birds. Every single time I try to plant corn in containers or in the garden the seeds get eaten. Should I still let them germinate inside ? Or should I germinate them in the refrigerator and than put them In paper towels ? What should I do ? I would really like to grow my own corn. Last year I bought the plants and just had to suck it up and put it in the ground.?

      @@gabbysgoods827 if that's what's happening every time, I suggest sprouting then indoors until they get well established. Regular container potting or seeding mix will work just fine.

    First off, this is my first year taking on a full scale gardening project (Spring 2023). That said, I’m not even a quarter of the way into your video and see how I screwed up already. I didn’t depress the soil nor did I water from the bottom but praise be to God, almost all the seeds that I’ve planted sprouted this week, 27 of 32. Now let me finish watching your video to help me with the transplant. Hopefully I won’t make any more major mistakes. 😊

    Funny thing is last year,when I didn't know any better, I took an ear from fridge that had started to wither. I broke it in half by hand then took a knife and cut halves into quarters. I took a Tupperware dish bin and filled it with soil. I planted the 4 quarters in the corners of bin and kept watering daily. Every single kernel germinated. Never having done this before I pulled all the sprouts out of the cob. Had WAY too many babies and ALL of them transplanted fine. I'll probably never be able to do this again.

    1. Start with fresh corn seeds for the best results.
    2. Directly sow seeds approximately 1.5 to 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart.
    3. Cover with soil, space your rows of seeds 30 to 36
    inches apart.
    4. Water your block of corn well after planting.
    5. Corn stalks are sturdy and should not need staking.

    So this year I tried gardening for the first time, and corn was definitely on the list of seeds to grow. I have limited space, so I grew them in bags which I had purchased from Amazon. Love these bags! - in fact - I'm trying to grow sweet potatoes for the first time in them right now too. Anyway, getting off topic here lol. I planted some corn seeds directly in the bag and others were transplanted. Omg do they grow quick! You aren't kiddin when you say that. By the time mine finished growing - tassels and all - some grew over 7 ft in height. The only downfall for me was that no ears produced 😢 (many reasons why this happened), but one interesting moment was when I cut them down - I noticed in a couple of the stems that there were two separate 'stems' within the main one and they were slightly different in colour. Any explanations for this? Anyway, I was very excited to try to grow corn, and although they did not produce any cobs, I will give it a go next year! Thanks for this video and all the up and coming ones on this topic. I will truly be looking forward to learning more about growing corn!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks Amy! Corn definitely needs to be planted in blocks or multi-rows. The reason for this is, the pollination of the ears so that they actually produce corn. I like to space mine in a 1 foot radius around each plant. That is, a 4x4 area would have 16 corn plants. Each of those little strands becomes an individual corn kernel. Space the corn too far apart and it won't get pollinated and you'll have patchy corn. But also, space them too close together and the leaves get in the way and even worse pollination problems! 1 say 12-18 inches apart for the adult plants. Cheers!
