Okay, but to be completely serious, I love that he mentioned the misinterpretations, because that was actually a serious part of the movie that they got wrong and almost NOBODY comments on it. It's all about the CGI (which, granted, is understandable) but there's a lot more to it than just that. (Heads up, this turned out longer than I expected) With the Gumbie Cat and Bustopher Jones, I can't tell if they purposely got it wrong for a "comedic contradiction" (ex; having Jenny say she 'is deeply concerned for the ways of the mice' than having her eat them afterwards) or if they genuinely thought it was like that in the poems. ALW already commented on the misinterpretations of Bustopher so I won't get into that. But it doesn't just stop there, almost every song in the movie is misinterpreted one way or another. The Rum Tum Tugger is a good example. Here's the thing: contrary to what it sounds like, Rum Tum Tugger actually ISN'T indecisive like the movie portrayed. He just like's the opposite of what is offered, and what is offered is always changing, so what he wants is always changing. Does that make sense? In the musical, if you look closely to the choreography, you see that Tugger NEVER makes the first move on the queens. They approach him and he'll MAYBE indulge them for a second but then immediately get right back on with his number. In the movie, HE's the one actively going after cats (Victoria) who are OBVIOUSLY interested, before dropping her, as if he changed is mind I guess (?). Either way, that's NOT the case. How is he "liking what he finds for himself" if he's making moves on a cat that's obviously already interested? Plus there's that "Nah nah no more milk" than five seconds later: "MIILLLKKK". Like said earlier, he's not indecisive. Mr.Mistoffelees was butchered as an entire character. To be simple, in the movie, they basically took the line "you would think there was nobody shyer" and decided that shy, meek, and clumsy would be his character. But here's the thing: "You would think"= "Gives off the impression" "Give's off the impression"= "seems like it, but really isn't." Gillian Lynn and ALW understood that, and that's why at first in the musical, Misto does in fact give off the impression that he may be a shy cat. He hangs in the background, gets tiny little moments, he even has that quiet voice. But when it's his turn to shine, you realize that, "oh, he's not shy at all". But in the movie, he actually is shy. Therefore when he himself sings "you would think there was nobody shyer",you tilt your head, because... what? It's not "you would think there is nobody shyer", he's not giving off the impression that he's shy, he IS shy. Which is just really annoying. That being said, I would keep going but this is already ridiculously long. If you find any flaws in my reasoning, feel free to say so.
@@Astronomicalfacts true they really jump around seemingly aimlessly in the movie, the only real feat of acrobatics being Jerrie pole-vaulting across the buildings. The bigger problem with them in the movie is their character. In the musical they’re more mischievous children or teens than straight up evil. Having them work for Macavity is probably the dumbest thing they could have done with them. In the musical the line that alludes to Jerrie working with Mac seems to suggest more than he was a pawn, unaware that his actions were benefiting Macavity. Hell he even joins Alonzo and the others in fighting Macavity when Munkustrap is too hurt to continue the fight. Having him AND Teazer (not to mention Bombalurina) actively working for Macavity just completely ruins the fun of their characters, making them nothing more than a couple of goons
I love that hating on the 2019 Bustopher Jones made it into this video of the HIGHLIGHTS of his commentary. It was probably some of my favorite commentary of the whole show.
I think ALW is referring to the disappointment and lack of joy the movie version brings and I think it’s a very funny and cheeky moment he has shared with us… made me chuckle lol
I honestly love ALW talking about how "other versions" of Bustopher Jones are crass an unfunny because the Hollywood film is a butchering of this show. Take em down Andrew!!! This version is the best version.

Love love love this! It’s very interesting to hear Lloyd Webber talk about this show, his intentions, what he thinks of certain parts, his inspirations, some funny anecdotes! Such a joy to watch! Would love to see more like this! Perhaps with Phantom or JCS
I remember waiting in line on the day for return tickets when I went to London as a student. Got a great seat near the front, burning the whole week's budget. When the lights turned off, and the "cats" came through the aisle next to me, I remember the joy until this very day. I have seen the show several times over, but I can never forget the London show. Thank you Mr Webber and your great team.
If I could have a word with Andrew, I really would beg him to please start a project to properly remaster this film to 4K and re-edit it to get back anything that was cut. It is the best filmed version and it's so good it really should be preserved better.
The 1998 direct to video version of Cats is infinitely better than that monstrosity out of Hollywood. I just wish The Really Useful people would produce similar live theater to video productions of other ALW masterpieces. I would love to see a Starlight Express production in D2V form.
@@magicamadeye I think you might be one of those people who like watching horror films as well. If you can watch it, you made of far stronger stuff than me. I tried to watch the clips for the Cats (2019) on UA-cam. Either stop them around 1 minute mark or watched through whole because I was frozen in horror (except Skimbleshanks The Railway Cat which is a saving grace in it's video version, the audio version is so-so) I have only seen the Bustopher Jones clip in a video comparing both 2019 and 1998 version. Got so horrified by it that I have not yet watch Bustopher Jones (2019) on UA-cam in full. Instead I went and watch the vastly superior 1998 version about 4 time in succession.
I've ever really thought it about it that way, but he's right - the leg warmers over the knees do take away some of the human shape in the dancers. Fascinating!

I agree with all of this and also mugojerrie and rumpelteazer aren’t really as acrobatic in the 2019 film as the stage show

Cats is a Musical-Ballet masterpiece thanks to Gillian Lynne, ALW and T.S. Eliot
You understate it. It's much more than that. Ballet is only one type of dance included. There are numerous other styles incorporated.

What you mean his scallops, hotpot and custard tart?! 🤔😉✌🏻😆
