  • In this video I talk about being raised/ coming of age on the internet, gen z humor, vine, tiktok, stan twitter, one direction, my astronomical screen time, and all that good stuff. I was inspired by Lorde and I was feeling a tad melodramatic. Maybe the internet raised us!! Or maybe people are jerks :0

this video really addressed the elephant in the room.. we’ve been so indoctrinated to the constant need for new content! on one hand I love the creativity of our generation but it also gets suuuper messy when we can’t detach the creative artist with the person on the internet

It's kinda sad how internet addiction isn't taken seriously yet :///. Like the closest thing to it is those video game addiction clinics but there's not even enough of those around. I feel that in the future people are going to look at the internet addiction like how we now look at people chain-smoking in the 50s. I can spend like 4 hours - 9 hours a day on my phone, it's definitely a process to get my brain rewired to not have to be entertained all the time.

I love how you brought up memes and how integral it is to our humor and how we communicate. I find it very interesting because every meme is highly contextual. So many memes build upon others, require knowledge of recent events, or some other common understanding for our specific community. So some memes are just impenetrable or incomprehensible to some because they weren't around or just didn't see the several memes it was based on. Idk I just think the ways that this generation communicates online is so interesting because we're the first to truly grow up with the internet and we always find new ways to use it to it's fullest potential.

I feel like an important aspect of Gen Z humour is also intertextuality? Some memes can refer to more than 3 other memes and still be easily understood by most zoomers? The best memes are usually crazy intertextual or are the most random out-of-the-blue nonsensical things you've ever seen?

You're totally right! I swear I could write a dissertation on gen z comedy. So many adults don't get it because it's part of a system. If someone sees a meme without knowing the origin they're like "um what?" Because you have to know the origin of it and other versions of it And memes evolve so quickly. Its like making photo copies of photo copies. The more you scan it the more distorted it gets. I feel like gen z comedy is very Dadaist. Dada was an art form that originated after WW1, rejected capitalism, and was rooted in satire and nonsense. The similarities are extreme.

the internet is rather scary, I believe. I struggled a lot with being a rather friendless person on the bottom of the public school food chain, to finding my footing in a secondary school but still dealing with the emotional trauma of being utterly rejected by your peers. i think the internet also has a magical quality in that, because it is text-based, you are able to form your thoughts in their most perfect form, if that makes sense. I think that most people in our generation have at some point been rejected by someone who they really cared about- thus, the internet becomes the shield against having to 'be known'.
With our words and our aesthetics, we create the most beautiful versions of ourselves. No one ever sees us just as we are, what we look like when we're truly alone. And in a sense, you are right in saying that we never really are alone anymore. I wonder if that has created, or has been created by, the fear of our own brains unfiltered.

Back in the 1910s-1940s, kids were reading a lot of books, it was so bad there were big bestsellers over the addiction of books in kids, next came TV, parents were equally scared over the addiction of TV, next face came internet, finally today social media.
You are not crazy, as quality of life gets better, we have more free time and as content gets simpler to have we will take it. It's normal, enjoy it, love it, learn from it etc it's an added advantage as you said humor, it's adds to the culture so it socializes/keeps you upto date, from politics to technology to foreign worlds. I love foreign films on Netflix just finished Dark
Being an introvert IS abt energy, someone being online, is manageable, someone in the same room demands your attention at that time. As long as you are capable to hold a conversation (online or otherwise) and you can hold a relationship (at least grow with your friends and fam) you are good.
Bottom line: You are Gen Z, doesn't mean you aren't productive, just means you have the choice to be, pick the good from the bad, love your life, you are doing pretty okay.

      @linnsandstrom8780 4 роки тому +3

@@WoahitsCharnyl just wanted to add a thing my mum told me about growing up before the internet. When she was in middle school she was really into the Nancy Drew books and they were considered "bad books" by her teachers and adults in general, because they weren't "deep" enough and about a girl who liked girly stuff (she was also a badass detective but sure...). So society has always been disliking whatever the kids were into, and probably also extra hard on what preteen and teenage girls liked. My siblings are old millenials and I'm gen z and she's always been really critical of the way society demonized things popular when we grew up like video games and violent movies. I think the social media addictions nowadays is a little different though since it's not just an interest, it's literally re-shaping the way our society works and how we communicate with each other. To be fair I feel like most zoomers are actually pretty aware of their social media and internet addictions though while the boomers who spend all day on facebook and always keeps the sound on on their phones so they can check every notification are handling it way worse...

It’s something I’ve been thinking more and more about and it’s terrifying because I always feel like I need to be consuming something (sometimes I think that it feels like when I’m not consuming anything it feels like I’m not being productive). I totally feel you on that awareness of always needing content to consume and being unable to sit with your own thoughts and really spend time with yourself. I think that's why I've grown to appreciate yoga so much since it's the one exercise for me where it's just me listening to a teacher and not listening to music or a podcast or something? Idk that's in my experience but it also gives enough of a challenge and enough to focus on for my short attention span to be caught up in it.
I also think there is a balance to consuming and creating, every moment we spend creating something is time spent with ourselves, like with this video. Personally I never found the idea of 'go on this app less' or 'delete this on your phone' to be helpful, the only thing that has helped me to not live online or just in a constant content consuming mode is focusing on adding things that don't fall into those categories into my day instead of focusing on taking away.
Also with the "everyone is looking at me" thing I TOTALLY remember feeling that way in high school and junior high, I would feel self-conscious about... existing and would be sooo in my head about simple things like getting up to go to the bathroom in class or raising my hand or ANYTHING. I wonder how the internet has helped contribute to that (if it has at all?)
Tbh at the end of the day all we can hope is that we all stay aware of ourselves and of each other cuz otherwise things get messy

This is really interesting! I grew up in the late 90s/early-mid 2000s and it was the beginning of internet. I felt like so much time was spent on AOL instant messenger (RIP), Myspace, livejournal, and other blog forums. Most of my close relationships were with IRL people who were on the same internet platforms as I was and also online friends from around the world (many of whom I'm still in contact with over a decade later). Short meme videos and UA-cam were just starting... And music was a HUGE part of what drew me to things like MySpace and kept me searching the internet for new songs for mix-cds. It's interesting to hear you talk about how evolved forms of those early things have played such a huge part in your youth. I definitely resonate with the idea that we struggle with silence and having a long attention span. I can't imagine what it's like to have had a smart phone basically from childhood. Great, concise reflections!

Thank you so much for this video!
As someone from the generation before you, I grew up on the cusp of the technological tidal wave and so it's fascinating to hear the fears, preoccupations and experiences of the younger generation. Your nostalgic descriptions really illuminated the differences between the millennial and Gen. Z childhoods and made me wonder what the future holds as well. Ultimately, who knows, but I believe with reflective and introspective young people like you, it'll be something new and exciting.
    Thanks again :)

it's scary how much of what you're describing relates to me
one direction in middle school? check.
    summertime sadness on repeat? check.
    Lorde/indie phase? check.
as a gen Z member who finally left teen years, I'm scared of what technology did to us and what it continues to do. Its not the villain, it's a very helpful unavoidable tool. But I'm not sure if our young minds were capable of making rational decisions on how to use it. I know that we're basically the experiment of "first kids to always have technology since birth"- I think the conclusion of that experiment will be that some of us will be extremely successful and use all the resources to their advantage while the other half will sink into netflix, movies, memes, reddit, and whatever thing they stan. TERRIFYING.

this video is so great, it sums up my thoughts perfectly. I feel like we use the internet as a drug almost, as a distraction. So many things are going wrong in the world, and so many things can go wrong, and it’s terrifying. I suffer a lot with existential thoughts, and I hate being alone with myself because my own thoughts scare the life out of me. I always have to have some sound, someone else talking. idk, I think this topic is pretty interesting.

I’m gen z but I’m really sheltered. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing yet but it’s my parent’s decision. I don’t have a phone, I don’t have any social media (UA-cam was a huge “maybe” but they consented, eventually) and I’m homeschooled as well. We just moved and then got quarantined. So, I wasn’t able to make any friends:/ I feel like an outcast. I’m trying to convince my parents to let me download TikTok, to see what other teens my age are like. My parents want the best for me and I love that but sometimes I wish they’d let me branch out just a bit.

I was born in 1994, so not GenZ, but man, you guys never fail to impress me with your ability to make the best out of the MANY crummy world events that you guys have had to witness. Born around 9/11, and growing up with TWO massive recessions, as a generation, you guys have had to grow up fast. You’ve had to navigate a far more uncertain political and economic climate all before the age of 23, and yet, you guys come out strong, and ready to kick butt! You guys have been crusaders for bringing awareness to and fighting social and political issues. As a millennial, I just want to say that I’m pumped to have you guys on our team 🧡

This is so relatable. I got my first phone at 15 and I remember before it, I used to interact and had an extroverted personality. But in 8th grade, I got depressed and in 10th grade, I had terrible social anxiety. I always distance myself and can’t make friends. I felt it when you said you feel like everyone’s staring at you because Samee!! I’m so scared to talk to people. And I also can’t concentrate on my online school work or conversations because of the social media addiction. I find myself losing my thoughts or what I’m about to say. It’s scary!! But as of 2 weeks ago, i deleted it all and now I’m hoping that i am regaining back my mental health and my focus.

I love this video. It'd be interesting to look into the attention span thing more. I think it's related to content being more accessible for everyone to produce, so perhaps the average quality is lower, so we are reluctant to watch/read something that's long all the way through as we know that there is a higher chance (than there used to be), that it will not be enjoyable or the pay-off will be poor. We'd rather waste 7 seconds of our time than half an hour. We're also not savouring the content as much as there's so much of it and it's often free or very cheap. I know I pay much more attention to a film that I've rented than one I already had on DVD/is on Netflix.
Also I think the not being satisfied alone with thoughts thing might be related to the constantly checking how you're being perceived thing. I need to constantly be listening to music or doing something or else my brain makes every effort to tell me how awful I am, with examples. I know a lot of people who are the same. We are expected to be perfect and our slip-ups are highlighted because we see people criticizing those same slip-ups/shortcomings in other people all the time on the internet.

I was born in 1981; I really appreciate this perspective! I think that other generations have so much to learn from the youth. All this awareness of racism and police brutality would not have happened without the youth pushing back against the unacceptable, getting in the streets and video-documenting the injustices more times and from more angles than can possibly be ignored. From an Xennial, sincerely - Thank you! Your disconnect from that which has come before may just be what saves the world.

I totally relate to what you said about being an introvert but at the same time not really being alone. I personally think the reason we are so comfortable with the internet is because you get to create you own little word your own little space, but in real life you don't really chose the way things are...if that makes sense...

love that you brought up music as an integral part of growing up on the internet! i personally never got into 1D but i'm an 05' baby and i was probably obsessed with MJ from age 5-8. i also remember the lana del rey's summertime sadness craze and lorde just being the worm in my brain for at least 2 years. i later created a fan/personal account on insta for shawn mendes, the whole cast of disney's descendants and christina grimmie. that was two years of being part of the internet fandom, after which i became a bts fan as well. soon after, i joined twitter, realised i was gay, made online friends and found community. wild ride.
now i'm a gen z'er who has social anxiety, depression, is , music stan, a "social media activist" (in the sense that social media is my main source of information and community - i do learn a lot about social and political issues on insta/twitter - because i'm basically a loner and being gay and asian is hell), is self dx autistic + spends hours laughing at memes by myself.
i think we are simultaneously the most burdened and most whimsical (?) generation right now. it's kinda hilarious.

first I just wanna say I loved this video, like so much. related to this on so many levels. I just watched a tik tok about how our generation consumes so much media/information more than any other generation & how memes & jokes, or even tik tok sounds have went from weeks/months away from one another to days, like we feel like a meme was popular months ago but it was literally only like two weeks ago it’s so weird. our minds have been filled with so much media it’s hard to even keep up with time, quarantine didn’t help either honestly. but it’s so crazy, after I watched the tik tok i couldn’t stop thinking about it so i went to youtube to find a video that talked about this issue & couldn’t find much. yesterday i watched your a24 video & i wanted to watch you talk about something again because you had such good takes lol. in the middle of trying to find you i’m literally just going to warm up my food & chill mind you it’s 7 am & i haven’t slept since yesterday lmao (i promise this is going somewhere) but it’s so crazy that i came across this specific video, which talks about media consumption. but it’s crazy i just wanted something in the background which you talked about & i just can relate to this sooo much lol. from stan twitter (i was more on instagram for mindless behavior/the omg girls lmaooo, then i went to odd future facebook groups & i had a frank ocean stan page lol) to this its like we really grew up on the internet & you definitely just opened my eyes

6:02 Establish a mindfulness practice! It's been really game-changing for me. I mean, I'm still addicted to technology LOL but I also feel comfortable with silence and being alone with my thoughts. There are free apps that have super short guided meditations you can incorporate into your day (ideally once a day but even every couple or few days is a good start). Once you kind of understand how the meditations are guided, you can easily wean yourself off of listening to them and just do them yourself. This kind of mindfulness meditation practice helps you integrate full awareness and presence into small moments of the day. Then go on with Spotify, UA-cam, Netflix, and life as usual!
And/or... pick a specific task (like cooking or picking out your clothes for the day) and try turning off outside stimuli when you do that specific task. For example, if you would normally play music or a show while picking out clothes/getting dressed, try being fully present for that task and aware/appreciative of the sounds, textures, smells, flavors, whatever senses are applicable to the task you choose.

This video is so amazing. This is kind of a vent of how I have experienced the internet!
here's how it went for me as someone born year 2000 and only got internet when i was 12 in 2012. it went the anime route for me, I had always loved ghibli films but suddenly I couldn't watch anything if it wasn't animation, i basically lived on tumblr and I still do. Which was not the healthiest thing for a 13 year old. I isolate myself. I find my biggest comfort and escapism when I am alone, reading fanfiction or looking at comics and pretending I am someone else. I also have the everyone is staring at me feeling. I don't post anything personal online, only art and fandom things. It got to the point where I couldn't go outside. I feel like I have a warped perspective of the world and myself and I am constantly trying to understand it but I won't let myself experience it because I am afraid that I don't belong anywhere. When I have free time I consume content because I'm afraid of sharing my own self, I'm afraid of making things that come from me, I'm afraid of myself being part of any equation. It goes to the point where I don't do anything for my own life and I only do work where it will benefit others and move them forward in life. I'm afraid to do things for me. I don't like who I am and I don't even know who I am, I'm so full of self-doubt when it comes to how I feel that even the emotions I experience seem fake. I rarely go a day without consuming animation. And considering I have a sensory processing disorder, I often cannot go without listening to instrumental music or some form of non-vocal music for a majority of the day. If I could get treatment maybe it would be possible to cut back on this and still preserve my mental health.
