  • I did not pioneer this technique. I learned it in the 80's from a documentary about how some African countries were coping with pollution from modern, western influence and from being industrialized. As raw materials become harder to obtain and more strictly regulated, waste product is the new raw material. As our ancestors did, I try to use what is readily available in my work whenever possible.
I did not use a pattern. I improvise the design and just crochet until it's the size and shape I like.
Obviously, please do not use degradable bags for this. I'm using HDPE (high density polyethylene) #2 plastic grocery bags that are still readily available in my area.
4mm hook. SC for the bottom. SC, CH1 for the top.
I used up about 125 grocery bags for the large tote once I added the handles. And I used up about 52 grocery bags for the smaller cord purse. Definitely freed up some space in my cabinets after years of accumulation ^_^

For over 20 years I've made bags using scraps of fabric left over from sewing. But I'd never thought of making a bag out of those annoying grocery bags. This is a great rainy day craft idea for me and my daughter.

I have a ton of empty bags at my place, grocery bags... last night I was bored and decided to give this a try. Boy does it ever work. I'm currently working on making a plastic mat for my bathroom so the crappy tiles don't get any more ruined than they already are.

A wonderful friend who crochets all the time (retired) gave a large one of these to me & my wife as a wedding gift along with many other yarn-crocheted items. This bag is now our favorite bag and we are amazed at how strong they are. Everywhere we go people remark on it (it's red, white and blue but otherwise the same). She says it takes her 11 hours to make one bag so if you get one as a gift, appreciate the time & effort that goes into it

This is awesome!!! Beyond cool! So many perks by doing this! You can make a waterproof beach bag! The bags are free, instead of spending $$ on yarn! You're recycling. It'll last a much longer time! No piling (purses/bags made from yarn tend to pile & wear out)! It'd be a lot sturdier & actually stand up, than a bag made from yarn! I could go on... I'm definitely doing this! Thanks!!

Be careful when using this as a beach bag though, I believe this is the type of plastic that may begin to melt if left in direct sunlight.

okay woah. 😧💖 i thought it was made of used yarn or jute, but this is brilliant! i get how it wouldn't wear as much as a jute one or yarn one too. and you could always disassemble later for other projects. defo gonna try this in the future. thanks for sharing!! 💖

You might find that if you disassemble something crocheted with plarn roving that the plarn gets easily fatigued. However, the spun plarn cordage (in another video I posted) holds up much better to being unraveled. :)

These look incredibly awesome. I never would’ve guessed these were anything other than a straw bag. Well done.

I am thankful that such an overlooked item can be very useful and functional for years to come. I will purchase a Japanese yarn winder.

The bag is simply beautiful, light to wear, resisting to be worn out, plus, preserving nature....Everyone should do something to keep nature well. I keep all my plastic for reuse, cups, bags for planting etc...Great video.
