I am very proud to offer this interview to all of you and super proud to bring David Grisman into the Lessons With Marcel family! We went for nearly 2 hours that day and Marcel has artistically edited it down to this brilliant 25 minutes. Perhaps Marcel will release bonus footage of this interview on his extras channel one day. I was truly blown away by some of Dawg's responses -- especially his comments on his version of "Minor Swing" and his thoughts about changing licks to make them easier to play. I always find David's fingerings to make a lot of sense and I was happy to hear him comment on that. Also, Andy Hatfield, Hayes Griffin, and Marcel did a great job overdubbing the harmony parts to "Ricochet!" I am grateful to be a part of the LWM team!
David is a lovely human. In 1996 I had a life threatening car accident. 3 weeks ICU and 3 months on a ward. A friend sent an email to David telling him I was a big fan in a bad way and he sent me a Cd with a beautiful uplifting message. I am so grateful for that connection.
Thank you so much for this Excellent Interview !! David Grisman is going to sell a bunch of stuff from his site to me! I did not know about that website. Has some wonderful music on it !!
I have to say, even though bluegrass is not my main music pasion, THIS CHANNEL just oozes so much LOVE for the music that is just delightful to watch and listen to you guys! Thank you, I'm happy I found you
I was fortunate enough to be at the Larry Rice Benefit on that Sunday night in Tallahassee. A wonderful night of music. Also have been enjoying Mickey & his music for many years. Great interview! Thank you for this!!!
Interviewing THE Dawg. The G.O.A.T. I’m lucky to have Mickey as my mandolin teacher and he’s so much more than a teacher. Besides being a guitar and mandolin savant he’s also a good person… Great interview Mickey and Marcel…
This was one of my all time favorite David Grisman interviews. Not only is David Grisman one of the coolest people around, mickey is an exceptional interviewer and a joy to watch and listen to. It was so great to learn the origin of the legendary pizza tapes album and minor swing and hear some of the stories from days gone by but it was really nice learning how the Dawg approaches both learning old tunes and coming up with compositions of his own. Lots of great wisdom packed into 25 minutes! Mickey should definitely do more interviews! (Bonus points for the bomb ass video editing and for the LWM version of Ricochet!)
Sheer Joy coming across this today. I’ve been honored twice to have a brief Meet & Greet with Dawg. The man has an incredibly cool personality and aura of grace which impacts you at a soulful led level. 🎉❤️🙏🌹📚
Long time fan of the Dawg. I mean long, long time. I was privileged to attend one of his classes at the Sunset Center in Carmel, Calif. . He divided the group into those who read music and those who were "ear" players and "tab" players. I sat alone , but David made me feel right at home. Great lesson, I learned more in a couple hours than in the previous couple years. Legendary player, superb teacher, generous and caring; a gentleman with heart. Thanks so much for the video, brought back a lot of memories.
Interesting. I liked the comment that it's really hard to avoid being yourself. It's amazing, though, the people who would try to force you to be otherwise. That's a big part of the reason I fell out of the music business, and why still to this day I'm fighting the same old battles to be able to remain myself. I've been doing this for 40 years. In those days especially it was different for a woman. It still is. Liked Soldier's Joy. Well seasoned, like a fine wine. That kind of sound only comes with time. Amazing all the work David did as time went on, after I fell out of it. Movies? My goodness - Also fascinating to hear about the evolution and crossing of paths between bluegrass and jazz. I was an early observer. I had hitchhiked to the Southeast, wound up in Tennessee from California to learn bluegrass and wound up meeting a jazz guitarist in Knoxville who turned me onto it. This was about the same time David and Tony's Dawg music began picking up. I wound up making a 180 deg. turn and heading back to California to try to learn jazz. Those were the days. Hitchhiking 3000 miles was a drop in the bucket. Now every day when I wake up I'm just grateful to have another day to get up off the couch. Enjoyed listening, nice interview. Thanks for sharing.
My favorite mandolin player, and the first one I ever recognized by ear. I was listening to Bonnie Raitt's version of "Louise" and thought, "You know, that sounds like David Grisman." And I was right! So distinct, so melodic, and so beautiful.
I enjoyed this. Will be making use of both your websites. I noticed that David has a recording of Billy Strings and Don Julin from 2013. I was a regular attendee of Folk Alliance in Kansas City and attended the year that Billy and Don did. I ended up sitting through their showcase and got some great photos of the pair. Billy is a very expressive player.
Thanks Marcel for everything you do man, you hooked me up with Andy a few years ago, and now I'm off running! Hooked on acoustic music and flatpicking that 6....
Dawg has shared so much great music over the years. He has recorded with so many musical icons ! He has been a major factor in bringing the instrument back to life in the United States . How many mandolin players will say , " I picked up the mandolin because I heard David Grisman's 1st Album ?
Mickey has been such a huge influence on my life and musical career. His passion and initiative for organizing amazing events and experiences for his students have no limit.
What a awesome interview With Dawg! Thanks Mickey, and Marcel, Love the content, Keep Acoustic Music Alive! I'm doing my best to get out there, WaylonFingers Baby. Thank you David Grisman for being such wonderful human being. Happy picking friends...
I could scarecely believe the video when I saw it pop up haha. It was hearing the Pizza Tapes that started my journey into all this type of music so it was great to see this interview. That was fanstastic, thank you for uploading!
This is an important document of music history. You both should be proud for how this ended up and for you honoring and for David being the musical force and producer mind he has maintained. Such a special document in so many ways. Thank you. This was rich.
Got a chance to watch your interview with DAWG….It was engrossing and amazing. Answering many questions that have been in my mind for decades. He’s a great mind as well as a musician. You’re a wonderful and natural host and really know how to conduct an interview…I’m an eternal fan of yours anyway, but here’s another hook to hang my hat on, my friend!!!
Wow, such a great interview and insight. I didn't even know about the AcousticDisc releases until it popped up on my Instagram feed. And thoroughly enjoying the Tony & Wyatt Rice Together release. Cheers Y'all 👏👏👏👏
This is great! I got to see him play and teach at the Tacoma Wintergrass festivals 20 years ago. And the other week I found a copy of "Dawgwood" out in the wild, great disc!
So many thoughts - that was great. Loved the emphasis on Tone Poems. I’m a geek - have all the accessories. But mostly enjoyed hearing the story behind the myth of Pizza Tapes. Thanks for the efforts here.
That was EPIC, thank you so much for documenting some of Dawg's stories. Loved hearing about his approaches to so many classics and how they morphed into his own sound, so amazing! I definitely have a couple new movies to go check out now too :)
Great to see David Grisman any time. Well done Mickey and Marcel!! I have many of those LPs and CDs from when they were released. You came up with super questions that opened up so many interesting stories. Made my day!
Wow this interview is fantastic. Loved the moment with Mickey getting too excited to ask about Stephane Grappelli. If you couldn’t tell Mickey was loving every minute of this, that should show you!
David is s great Guy❤️👍 I Sold David the 1905’ Gibson A-4 that was featured on Tone Poems #1. Sold Dave a few other great instruments. Saw the Dawg Quintet in 1978’ Sacramento State College. Mark OConner’ was the guitarist at that time. Best! Dennis🇺🇸
Words cannot express how perfect this video is. Did I miss something, or did Dawg not mention if that tape with Tony, Darrol, and the mystery banjo player is being released??
Marcel I would love to hear your thoughts on Molly Tuttles White Rabbit… something about that intro is so striking. Just best take on that tune in my opinion. Outfits are fun too!
Marcel, This doesn't relate to this video but I wonder why you do not mention or study Clarence White as you do others like Tony Rice. I watched Tony play live several times and he does have a unique style. Seems as though he goes out of his way to make things difficult at times to show off his abilities, which are amazing. First guy I have ever seen use his little finger to form an A shaped bar cord. Ouch. Not anything i would encourage a beginner to copy. David Grisman sure did respect Clarence. He was a trail blazer for many many flatpickers. More than likely you will not read this but it is the only way for me to reach out. Can't find an e-mail for you and I do not subscribe to any social media nor do I want to. Love your channel.
Most of us are too young to have seen Clarence, and the recorded material is limited, with very little [non-Byrds] video besides Muleskinner [w Grisman]. Sandy Rothman has done his best to provide some audio and he has also written many articles here & there [I love his CD with Steve Pottier= Bluegrass Guitar Duets, even if Sandy has focused on mandolin since]. Russ Barenberg did a labor of love book of tab of Clarence recordings, and also there is a book of tab and stories by Roland & Diane. Trail Blazer indeed!

These are so beautifully edited together. Great job!
The ethos of Dawg is comforting and inspiring. Love that dude!
I have to say, even though bluegrass is not my main music pasion, THIS CHANNEL just oozes so much LOVE for the music that is just delightful to watch and listen to you guys!

This was exceptionally produced!
This flew by, I would watch the uncut 2 hours for sure!
I was fortunate enough to be at the Larry Rice Benefit on that Sunday night in Tallahassee. A wonderful night of music. Also have been enjoying Mickey & his music for many years. Great interview! Thank you for this!!!
I'm a Dawg pup (disciple and follower), too! Thanks for doing this, guys.

Hats off to whoever put that intro edit together, nicely done. 👏
Thank you kindly.
I thought that CD was awesome. I still listen to it a lot
Awesome piece of history here! So much respect for both of these guys.
So many thoughts - that was great. Loved the emphasis on Tone Poems. I’m a geek - have all the accessories. But mostly enjoyed hearing the story behind the myth of Pizza Tapes. Thanks for the efforts here.
Thank you! Tone Poems changed my life and is a top 5 desert island disc for me for sure!
This is so cool, thanks for creating this.
So good!! He is such a goldmine. So interesting to hear him clear the air about pizza tapes and minor swing
His answer to the "Minor Swing" question blew my mind!

I haven't heard anything about it being released yet but we're hopeful 🤞
New Smokey Grass Boys
THE DAWG!
By any chance, was it the late Steve Arkin on banjo for that smoky grass recording?
cool!

I’m sure David *REALLY* appreciates the AI thumbnail.
Wait, is that "Smokey Grass Boys" download available somewhere?
Now available on David's Acoustic Disk website, just recently released
