    I scored one of these off eBay for $8 "not working" and repaired it. Works great. Usually the little contact switches go flat and just need to be reshaped.

    I built a homage to the 1311 last year. Used a jiffy box (plastic painted white and black) for the housing, a black zippy stick, a red rectangle arcade button for fire and the cable from a 1311 joystick.

    I had the same one, and the rubber sleeve came off. The base of the sleeve worked like a suction cup and so I would stick it to my forehead because I thought that was freaking hilarious when I was twelve!

    I had that joystick with C64 I had as a child, I don't think I ever used it, not even once, I used the QuickShot joystick I had instead.

    Just stripped down one of these and removed all the tape, removed the little metal switches contact cleaner everything and put on new tape most directions work but up is problematic.
    Definitely built to a price.
    Looks good as a display piece though

    The Zzap64 website has the original archive of the diary of Andrew Braybrook actually writing this game. Interesting reading, I have the original magazines somewhere in my loft ;)

    Back a few years ago, they were selling the replacement silver contact domes seperately on eBay, although I can't find them currently. These joysticks have a lot in common with the Atari CX-40, including having the domes on the switches collapse. The primary problem that I had with them, was the four "nibs" that depress the contact domes collapsing from over-enthusiastic video game players pressing harder in hopes it would make them move faster...
    I rebuilt an even half-dozen of the Atari circuit boards by replacing the contact domes and holding them in place with clear packing tape, which is identical to the original material. Cheap construction indeed!

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 років тому

      Definitely cheaply constructed. I'm glad they found a new way of building this stuff with the carbon rubber contacts they use in gamepads these days. It's still cheap to produce but at least it works more reliably. ;)

    That was a nice, simpler repair, for once. That stick is in very good condition. All the ones I have come across are destroyed -- the rubbery parts are torn around the base. Nice work! Now I added fixing my dead VIC-1311 Atari style joystick to my never-ending list of projects. I picked up some DeoxIT D5 today (seeing as I cannot get your contact cleaner here), at a horrible price I might add, so now I'm committed.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Thanks! I'll probably end up selling this one. It's working now but it's not a good joystick at all. Still pondering keeping it for its nostalgic value but I'm not very convinced. ;) Would be interesting to see if the Atari style sticks are exactly the same inside (I'd guess so) and Commodore just changed the looks to silence Atari's lawyers... I bet you're going to love the DeoxIT. If it's anywhere near as good as the Teslanol I'm using (which it probably is) it's VERY versatile and fixes most contact problems in the blink of an eye.

    • @MindFlareRetro
      @MindFlareRetro 7 років тому

      I was originally considering replacing the flexi-contacts in my VIC-1311 with mini tactile switches, but I think I'd rather keep it the joystick in its original state; it's in mint condition including the box.
      Man, the DeoxIT is expensive, $20 for 142g (5 oz.), but it's supposed to work magic. We'll see.

      Thanks for the repair tips! It sounds like you've dealt with these for a while. Have you seen the original VIC-1311 before? It's an Atari 2600 joystick in C= clothing... goo.gl/HNiFh1

    I was given one of these over the weekend! I remember it being awful to use on the VIC-20. Just look at it! So 80's. You gotta love an underdog joystick. ;)

    I remember a lot of these stick died while playing decathlon. Later I got a zipstick (with microswitches instead of foil contacts) and it still works like a charm today :)

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Yes, these are pretty flimsy. The Competition Pros and Zipstiks are way sturdier. I recently got a TAC-2 which is nearly indestructible. Going to make a little video about it soon, I think. :)

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 6 років тому +1

      yes my quickshot ii died in about 3 days, we got daley thompsons decathlon with the quickshot with the c64 in a bundle (with colossal adventure, longest loading game ever at about 45 minutes, and purple turtles which i played once ever), i bought a competition pro the orig with the round fire buttons and it lasted into amiga days, the first strong joystick was borrowing the atari one, crap though it was, it was durable

    Hi! I subscribed and I enjoy your videos a lot. One thing that would make the videos more enjoyable for me is that you could increase the pace a bit and be more to the point. It can get a little slow at times. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, thanks a lot for your efforts!

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Thanks and welcome aboard! It's difficult sometimes to find the right pace for the videos. I want to avoid them being boring and still try to show what I actually do (which is something I miss in many "faster" videos) so people can learn stuff. Still figuring out how to balance it right. I'll try to get better at it. :)

    Uridium was a great C64 game. One of my favourites was an earlier effort by Andrew Braybrook, called Gribbly's Day Out. Don't try to control Gribbly with that joystick though... or you'll go nuts. I remember taking apart a Quickshot 2 joystick every week or so. They had those same shite popper buttons. I destroyed two QS2 sticks by playing Daley Thompson's Decathlon on the Spectrum. One of the better joysticks of the time, was the Competition Pro.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Oh, I have to try Gribbly's Day Out. I heard of it but never actually played it. Thanks for the reminder. :) I destroyed a QS1 with Decathlon on the C64 back in the day. I have a couple of Competition Pros here at the moment. Still my overall favorite joystick.

    • @Inaflap
      @Inaflap 7 років тому

      I no longer have the real machines, but I do like a bit of retro gaming using fuse and vice x64 on Linux. Maybe ten years ago, I got a joystick labelled 'Competition Pro' with a USB connector. It has micro-switches on the direction and the two main fire buttons, plus a couple of smaller fire buttons that I suspect are those bubble type contacts. It has worked well for years but recently the left fire button has become unresponsive. It still clicks nicely, so maybe it just needs a spray of that switch cleaner that I saw you using. For some reason those USB Comp Pro joysticks are no longer available.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I had one of those USB Competition Pros, too. I actually gave it away to celebrate reaching 1000 subscribers on this channel recently. ;) I didn't take a look inside (at least I don't remember doing it) but my guess would be that they used small tactile switches for the smaller fire buttons (the same type that is used in many computer mice for the buttons). They fail quite frequently but a bit of contact cleaner often brings them back to life so that's definitely worth a try. Make sure to get something like Deoxit or "Tuner spray". Many contact cleaners damage plastics and the contacts.

    Amstrad SJS1 I think is worthy of the acclaim of being the worse joystick. But to be able to make a proper judgment you'd have to get all the joysticks people say are the worse joysticks and somehow create a test criteria that doesn't have a personal opinion bias to be able to quantify which is the worse. Surely someone could do this. Is it worth doing? Damn YES it is!

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 7 років тому

    What's wrong about the feel of this joystick? Maybe all it needs is a center stalk shim for better disambiguation, fresh switch plates, and some careful rubbing down of traces, maybe a fresh coat of solder paste on them?

    • @MarkTheMorose
      @MarkTheMorose 7 років тому +2

      It's more the shape than anything, since the inner mechanism is the same as the Atari CX40, which most people who used it seemed to like. The Commodore unit has a triangular section to its stick, and a badly placed fire button. Placed centrally for left and right handed users, it satisfies neither, forcing one to hold the joystick awkwardly.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +Siana Gearz It just feels very cheaply made and it's not very precise at all. Plus the shape feels awkward. The stick is just a bit too short and stubby and the base is shaped in a way that you can neither comfortably hold it nor put it on a table without it slipping. The electronics are working fine after cleaning it a bit. It's more about the overall design. Hard to explain but it just feels kind of wrong in many ways.

    I bought some arcade controls for a Neo-Geo MVS I have - it occured to me that these are wired very similarly (ie - there's no protocol - its just a bunch of switches shorted to a ground) just far fewer buttons. Anyhow the arcade stick/button parts were super nice and only $11 for the entire kit and you can put them into a project case or a wooden box you make yourself.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I came across parts/kits like that recently, too. Maybe I'll also have a go at making my own arcade style controller. Would be a nice little project.

  • @MarkTheMorose
    @MarkTheMorose 7 років тому

    The main issues with this joystick is the uncomfortable feel, caused by the central fire button and thick triangular section stick. Commodore should have marketed it as a 'misery' stick, rather than a 'joy' stick... It's about as uncomfortable to use as the Atari Proline stick, released with American Atari 7800's, and also available separately for use on the VCS. They're based on the shape of the Atari 5200 controller. Have a look at one if you get the chance, and test it on Uridium against the Commodore : )

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Is the Proline joystick the one that's also called CX-24? I actually have two of them that came with my Atari 2600 Jr. In comparison to the Commodore stick I like those a lot better. They are weird to hold as well but at least seem to react in a more precise way. In the end, it's a matter of taste I guess. ;)

    • @MarkTheMorose
      @MarkTheMorose 7 років тому

      That's the one. I have a few myself, and while they feel like a fairly robust and reasonably precise stick, Atari made no concessions to ergonomics.

  • @eddielegs344

    Yes true, however, is original all the worst joystick ever made that was in 1982, I had the black with 1knop were best joysticks okay, the button could be better I happen to have also one for me that you have now revised much of it , love your channel Jan I am of the older generation of c64 and Amiga users had with the 1001 cracking crew interaction, and more. Gtz..

  • @MatteoMatassoni
    @MatteoMatassoni 6 років тому

    I have the same joystick, but unfortunately it misses the top ring. I have to find a proper way to fix it because the black part is not held in place without it

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 років тому

      Yeah, the ring was slightly cracked on mine, too. Seems to be a weak spot. Maybe you can cut out something similar from a sheet of plastic and file it until it fits... Not a trivial task of course. :/

    I would try soldering the wire connections to the PCB.
    I remember my Dad bought a Sega Genesis joystick at a garage sale. I didn't have a Sega let alone anything that used a 9pin Dsub. A friend of mine however had a C64 and we tried it out since I know you could use Atari joysticks on a Sega and Sega controllers on an Atari. Sure enough it worked.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Yes, I did a similar thing with a friend's Genesis controller on my Amiga back in the day. I always liked the Sega controllers. Maybe I should get one some time. :)

      If I had a c64 I would build a nice arcade like joystick. Granted it would only have one button and the stick but still nice none the less.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Yeah, I definitely want to make an arcade style stick some time. There are quite a few kits and components available for reasonable prices I think.

    • @lelandclayton5462
      @lelandclayton5462 7 років тому

      I know of a few places however you're in Germany so it would kill you on shipping. However there is Conrad Electronics in Germany. They should have arcade joysticks and buttons. Then all you need is some MDF or chipboard (particle board) to build the case. Last time I was looking into building a NeoGeo arcade table top control deck I was looking at 60 bucks. Since a Atari/Commodore system only needs one button it would probably run about 35 or 40 bucks. Then again this was many years ago and prices have changed.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I found some promising looking kits with sticks and buttons on eBay, too. I'll have a look around. Thanks for the tips!

    I wonder if you could use a Master System controller on a commodore 64

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 років тому

      I vaguely remember some issue with fire buttons wired the wrong way round. Might be a good idea to double check the pinouts before trying. Pressing buttons might short out some pins on the CIA chip inside the C64 that is directly wired to the joystick ports. Not sure though.

    • @marakarthegreat

      There seem to be different opinions about this over the web. I haven’t tried so I‘m not 100% sure. The Master System controllers seem to work but the Genesis/Mega Drive ones can potentially damage the C64. Here’s a good forum thread: atariage.com/forums/topic/31797-sega-controllers-on-a-commodore-64/

    This is awful, it's like quickshot.
    Check tomahawk/pacman joysticks from anerousis. Quite rare and bit expensive as they are not produced anymore. If you get one you'll never touch another joy again. The only problem to other countries is that here we have the stick on the right side.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +Vincent GR I think there were many similar electronics designs but this one feels particularly bad to handle as well. The Quikshot feels okay in comparison. Never heard of the Tomahawk/PacMan sticks but I will be on the lookout.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 років тому +1

      I have a quick shot, it's fine! And then I have a weird stick with 3 buttons and 2 switches, and everything is made with endstop misroswitches, like an actual arcade stick, and it's completely clear and see through. The configuration switches on the bottom are for left and right handed configuration and for MegaDrive and Atari modes. There's no manufacturer name or model name on the thing. But the enclosure is injection moulded, it's not something that could have come out of some basement.

    the worst joystick ever is the quickshot ii that is the stick i got with my c64, and also daley thompsons decathlon, you can imagine, joystick died in 3 days, the best is the competition pro, the orig before they did microswitch fire buttons, mine lasted into the amiga days, before going with the amiga cause pc's could not use it, and bought the first gravis gamepad, if someone had thought of a gamepad for the c64 at the time, it would have made the games much easier than the quickshot II....very sloppy and vague, the quickshot had similar switches to this commodore, with more leverage and vagueness and broke faster, only its rapid autofire function made it popular

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 років тому

      Yeah, the very first joystick I owned (and that recently got back into my possession) was a Quickshot II, too. Horrible joystick indeed. I used a Competition Pro most of the time and it's still the joystick I feel most familiar with although I like the TAC-2 I acquired a lot, too.
